Its outline runs on verbs like design, recommend, and propose — it tests judgment, not configuration. Three things to know first: the scope blurb on the official exam page is wrong (it is information-protection and DLP boilerplate, which I verified verbatim), so prepare from the study guide instead; it has a free practice assessment, the only one of Microsoft's three agent credentials that does; and the 15 associate certifications it lists are described as usable, not required. Official specs: $165, English only, pass at 700, one-year validity.

This is a preparation path built from official material, not an exam-day account — I have not sat this exam. Every "what it tests" points back to the official study guide. No leaked questions. Verified 2026-08-18 against "Skills measured as of July 22, 2026."

AB-100 is the architect tier of Microsoft's three agent certifications — AB-620 builds, AI-500 codes, and AB-100 decides whether to do it at all, computes the ROI, and governs the result.

First, an Error on the Official Page

The Schedule exam block of the official exam page contains this line:

This exam measures your ability to accomplish the following technical tasks: implement information protection; implement data loss prevention and retention; manage risks, alerts, and activities.

That is wrong. Information protection, DLP and retention, risk and alert management — that is boilerplate from Microsoft's compliance exams, has nothing to do with AB-100, and contradicts the "Assessed on this exam" list further down the same page (Plan / Design / Deploy AI-powered business solutions).

The implication: prepare from the study guide, not from that blurb. This is the third time in this series that official documents contradict each other — after NVIDIA's blueprint descriptions and AI-103's documentation links. Cross-check official sources; one page is not enough.

The free practice assessment is where it beats its siblings — neither AI-500 nor AB-620 has one yet. Its study guide is also the only one of the three carrying a "Skills measured as of" date and a change log.

What the 15 Associate Certifications Actually Mean

Here is a list of the current possible associate certs that can be used for this expert certification:

It contains MB-280, PL-200, MB-330, PL-400, MB-230, MB-310, MB-500, MB-800, MB-820, AI-300, AI-103, AB-620, AB-210, AB-410, and AB-250 — fifteen, spanning Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and the AI line.

But the official text never says you must hold one. Compare AI-500, which has an explicit Prerequisites: 1 certification field and a standalone Certification prerequisites section — AB-100 has neither.

So the correct reading is: those fifteen "can be used," not "must be held first." Confirming it beyond doubt would take a question to Microsoft Credentials support; this article reports the official wording rather than inventing a rule it does not state.

The weight is on deployment and governance, and "deploy" here does not mean pressing a button — it covers monitoring and tuning, test strategy, ALM process design, and responsible AI, security, governance, risk, and compliance.

Area by Area

Plan AI-Powered Business Solutions (25–30%)

What it tests: assessing where agents fit in task automation, analytics, and decision-making; reviewing data for grounding (accuracy, relevance, timeliness, cleanliness, availability); organizing solution data for other AI systems.

At the strategy layer: applying the AI adoption process from the Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure; designing the strategy for building AI and agents; designing multi-agent solutions across Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, and Microsoft Foundry; use cases for prebuilt agents; deciding whether to build custom agents or extend Microsoft 365 Copilot; when custom models are warranted; guidelines for a prompt library; customized small language models; the elements of a Microsoft AI Center of Excellence.

On cost and benefit: selecting ROI criteria including total cost of ownership, producing an ROI analysis, build-versus-buy-versus-extend analysis, and implementing a model router that sends requests to the most suitable model.

How to prepare: the least exam-like area, and the one engineers most often skip — ROI analysis and build/buy/extend judgment are real objectives. Take one AI project you have shipped and actually compute its total cost of ownership.

Design AI-Powered Business Solutions (25–30%)

What it tests: designing business terms and Copilot customizations across Dynamics 365 apps; agents integrating with Dynamics 365 Contact Center channels; task agents, autonomous agents, and prompt-and-response agents; proposing Foundry Tools for a requirement; Copilot Studio topics including fallback; applying the Power Platform Well-Architected Framework; choosing between standard NLP, conversational language understanding, and generative AI orchestration; agent flows and prompt actions.

On extensibility: designing solutions with custom models in Microsoft Foundry; agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot; agent extensibility with MCP in Copilot Studio; agents that automate apps and websites using Computer Use; agent behaviors including reasoning and voice mode; optimizing with agents in Teams and SharePoint.

How to prepare: this area tests where the boundaries sit. Three recurring judgment calls: build versus extend Copilot, standard NLP versus generative orchestration, and task agent versus autonomous agent. Nail those three and the area holds.

Deploy AI-Powered Business Solutions (40–45%, the heaviest)

Analyze, monitor, tune: recommending processes and tools for monitoring agents; analyzing backlog and user feedback; applying AI-based tools to identify issues and tune; monitoring agent performance and metrics; interpreting telemetry for performance and model tuning.

Manage testing: recommending test processes and metrics; validation criteria for custom models; validating Copilot prompt practices; end-to-end test scenarios spanning multiple Dynamics 365 apps; a strategy for building test cases with Copilot.

Design the ALM process: for the data used by models and agents, for Copilot Studio agents/connectors/actions, for the Microsoft Foundry Agents service, for custom models, and for AI inside the Dynamics 365 app families.

Responsible AI, security, governance, risk, compliance: designing agent security and governance and model security; analyzing vulnerabilities and mitigations including prompt manipulation; reviewing adherence to responsible AI principles; validating data residency and movement compliance; access controls on grounding data and model tuning; audit trails for model and data changes.

How to prepare: this 40–45% is four sub-areas, and each is about designing a process rather than performing an operation. Turn each into your own checklist — for instance, "the five things ALM must cover before an agent goes live." The study guide has a change log; confirm you are reading the July 22 version.

Scheduling, and What the Official Course Is For

You cannot read your way through this one, because the outline runs almost entirely on design, recommend, and propose — it tests judgment, and judgment comes from projects.

Microsoft's own instructor-led course AB-100T00 says as much:

While this course aligns conceptually with many of the AB-100 exam skill areas, it is not a test-preparation course and does not focus on test-taking strategies. Instead, it provides the architectural foundations, enterprise context, and design reasoning that make AB-100 learning meaningful and applicable.

Microsoft explicitly saying its own course is not exam preparation is rare, and it tells you what kind of credential this is.

The self-study route is the free Microsoft Learn path Architect agentic AI business solutions — the one the exam page's own metadata points to — plus the free practice assessment.

Scheduling advice: with enterprise architecture experience, four to six weeks is enough to map your judgment onto Microsoft's product lines. Without architecture experience — development experience only — this is not an exam you pass by studying; join a cross-functional AI adoption project first.

The only official ladder remains AI-103 → AI-500. AB-620 and AB-100 stand alone; AB-620 merely appears on AB-100's usable list.

A Cross-Page Naming Inconsistency

Worth recording: AB-100's exam page describes candidate competencies using "Azure AI services," "Azure OpenAI," and "Azure AI Foundry," while AI-103's objectives have moved entirely to "Microsoft Foundry" and "Foundry Tools."

Same company, same product line, two pages updated in the same month, two vocabularies. When dating study material, don't treat one page's terminology as the company's current state.
