Gozaisho (御在所, ございしょ) refers to Mt. Gozaisho (御在所岳), the main peak of the Suzuka Mountains, in Komono, Mie-gun, Mie Prefecture. It stands 1,212 m high. When climbers say "Gozaisho" they mostly mean Tonai-kabe (藤内壁, とうないかべ), the granite crag on the mountain's north face. CLIMBING-net describes it as "藤内壁は御在所岳北面に広がる美しい花崗岩の岩場で、アルパインのゲレンデとして現在も良く登られ" (a beautiful granite crag spread across the north face of Mt. Gozaisho, still well climbed as an alpine training ground).
The draw is length: Maeone, Nakaone, and the Nakaone Buttress all carry multi-pitch routes. CLIMBING-net is also blunt that free routes exist, but "アプローチが遠く、高難度も少ないので、藤内壁にフリーだけを求めて訪れるクライマーは少ない" (the approach is long and hard routes are few, so few climbers come to Tonai-kabe for free climbing alone). If you want a short walk-in and hard single-pitch sport, look elsewhere. If you want to practice multi-pitch, cracks, and trad protection, this is a crag that comes up again and again around Nagoya.
What kind of crag it is
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Komono, Mie-gun, Mie Prefecture; north face of Mt. Gozaisho | Kanko Mie, CLIMBING-net |
| Summit elevation | 1,212 m | Kanko Mie |
| Rock | Granite | ROCKTOPO, CLIMBING-net, Kanko Mie |
| Angle | 70–90 degrees | CLIMBING-net |
| Style | Bolted lead, crack lead, multi-pitch | CLIMBING-net "この岩場の特徴" field |
| Guidebook | CLIMBING-net lists "東海・関西" under 掲載書籍 | CLIMBING-net |
Kanko Mie, the prefectural tourism site, says "この山の地質は花崗岩で、ロッククライミングで有名な藤内壁をはじめとする岩場が多く" (the mountain is granite, with many crags, starting with Tonai-kabe, famous for rock climbing). Yunoyama Onsen sits at the foot of the mountain and a ropeway runs to the summit, so it is busy with tourists; climbers use a different trail.
Route count (checked 2026-10-12)
- ROCKTOPO: 124 routes in three types:
- Multi-pitch, 9: 5.2+ 2, 5.10a+ 5, 5.11a+ 1, 5.12a+ 1.
- Face lead, 79: ungraded 1, 5.2+ 34, 5.10a+ 23, 5.11a+ 20, 5.12a+ 1.
- Crack lead, 36: 5.2+ 14, 5.10a+ 17, 5.11a+ 3, 5.12a+ 1, 5.14a+ 1.
- CLIMBING-net: "ルート数 100本以上" (over 100 routes), with no grade breakdown.
- Mountain Project: only 3 routes entered, all on Ichikabe. English coverage is thin; the Japanese sites carry most of the information.
Of ROCKTOPO's 124 routes, 95 are 5.10 or easier and only 28 are 5.11 or harder (plus one ungraded). It suits climbers who already lead, can build anchors, and can manage a rope team on multi-pitch terrain. Grade chasers will find little; CLIMBING-net says so itself.
Sub-areas
ROCKTOPO divides Gozaisho into these areas (F = face, C = crack, M = multi-pitch; difficulty E easy / M moderate / H hard):
| Area | Type and count | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| 前尾根 (Maeone) | F 21, C 8 | E 28, M 1 |
(Nakaone Buttress) | F 6, C 5, M 4 | E 6, M 8, H 1 |
| 一の壁 (Ichikabe) | F 16 | E 13, M 2, H 1 |
各ピークごと、ルートを選びながら登る" (the usual plan is to climb from P7 to P2 as a multi-pitch, choosing a route on each pinnacle). Mountain Project calls it "a very popular, very mellow multi-pitch with 7 or 8 pitches under 5.9 and a great view from the top."
- Nakaone (中尾根): Mountain Project describes "a great but wandering multipitch trad climb," somewhere around 6 pitches.
- Ichikabe (一の壁): per Mountain Project, a prominent granite slab with long moderates, crimpy sport routes to the left, and a few trad lines to the right. CLIMBING-net notes that Ichikabe and Maeone are also climbed in winter.
When to go
| Source | Season |
|---|---|
| ROCKTOPO | Season field lists April–November |
| CLIMBING-net | "4月~11月。11月以降は日陰になり寒くなるが、冬季クライミングのゲレンデとしても一の壁、前尾根は良く登られている" (April–November; after November the walls go into shade and get cold, but Ichikabe and Maeone are well used for winter climbing) |
| Mountain Project | "Fall brings crisp temps and the vibrant fall colors of the momiji trees" |
In short:
- April–November is the main season; both Japanese sites agree.
- After November the walls lose the sun and turn cold. Ichikabe and Maeone still see winter climbing, which is a different level of gear and experience and is not covered here.
- Autumn: Mountain Project recommends the cool temperatures and autumn colors, but this is also when the whole mountain is most crowded. See the traffic controls below.
- Winter road closure: Route 477 (旧鈴鹿スカイライン, the former Suzuka Skyline) at the foot of the mountain closes in winter, and two sources give different periods. The Gozaisho Ropeway Q&A says "毎年12月中旬から翌年3月頃まで、積雪に伴う冬季閉鎖" (closed for snow every year from mid-December to around March). Tonai Hut says "冬季通行止めとなりますのでご注意ください(12〜4月頃)" (closed in winter, roughly December–April) and that it takes about 15–20 minutes to walk from the winter gate to the trailhead.
Getting there
Climbers approach on the Ura-michi (裏道, うら登山道) trail. CLIMBING-net: from the Ura-michi trailhead, past Hinata Hut (日向小屋) and Tonai Hut (藤内小屋), "約一時間で藤内沢にあるテスト岩に着く" (about an hour to the Test Rock in the Tonai valley); Ichikabe is another 10 minutes left from the first gully (一ルンゼ).
Other approach times:
- Tonai Hut: "裏道登山口から藤内小屋まで、ゆっくり歩いて約40分です" (about 40 minutes at an easy pace from the Ura-michi trailhead to the hut).
- Mountain Project: starting from the Gozaisho Ropeway parking, about 45 minutes to Tonai Hut, then further up to the approaches, which branch off left of the main trail. MP also suggests asking the hut staff for approach beta.
Public transport
- Take the Kintetsu Yunoyama Line to the end, Yunoyama-Onsen Station (湯の山温泉駅).
- Change to a Mie Kotsu bus. Tonai Hut says about 10 minutes from the "近鉄湯の山温泉駅" stop to "湯の山温泉・御在所ロープウエイ前"; Kanko Mie says "近鉄湯の山温泉駅から三交バスで終点三交湯の山温泉下車" (Mie Kotsu bus from Kintetsu Yunoyama-Onsen Station to the terminus, Sanko Yunoyama Onsen).
- From the bus stop to the Ura-michi trailhead, Tonai Hut gives "徒歩20〜30分" (20–30 minutes on foot).
None of these pages list departures. The Gozaisho Ropeway access page links to two timetables, "アクアイグニス⇔近鉄湯の山温泉駅⇔御在所ロープウエイ" and "名古屋⇔御在所ロープウエイ"; check those before you go.
Driving
- Expressway exit: CLIMBING-net starts from Yokkaichi IC (四日市IC) on the Higashi-Meihan Expressway, takes Route 477 toward Yunoyama Onsen, turns right at the light before the hot-spring town onto the Suzuka Skyline, and reaches the Ura-michi trailhead in about 5 minutes. Tonai Hut and the ropeway instead start from Komono IC (菰野IC) on the Shin-Meishin Expressway; Tonai Hut says "約5km10分で裏登山道・登山口周辺" (about 5 km, 10 minutes, to the Ura-michi trailhead area).
- Free parking at the Ura-michi trailhead: the Komono Tourism Association (credited to Gozaisho Ropeway, posted 2021-09-24) lists "登り口すぐ横に3台分" (3 cars right beside the trailhead) and "橋の手前に約10台分" (about 10 before the bridge) between the bridge and the tunnel, plus "約20台の無料の駐車場" (a free lot for about 20) past the tunnel. Tonai Hut puts it as "蒼滝トンネル手前駐車場(数台)・蒼滝橋手前駐車場(10台程度)が便利です" (a few spaces before Sotaki Tunnel and about 10 before Sotaki Bridge are convenient) and warns "ハイシーズンには駐車場が満車となる場合もあります" (lots can fill in high season). CLIMBING-net adds "週末は早くから混雑する" (busy early on weekends).
- ROCKTOPO's parking spot: 御在所駐車スペース says "路肩に数台駐車可能" (a few cars on the shoulder), "約 5 台" (about 5).
- Don't park on the roadside when it's full: Hotel Yunomoto, an inn in Yunoyama Onsen, writes in its Golden Week / Obon / holiday section: "よく鈴鹿スカイライン沿いに駐停車している車を見かけますが、駐車禁止です" (you often see cars stopped along the Suzuka Skyline, but parking there is prohibited). I did not find the police or road authority notice itself.
- Other lots: Gozaisho Ropeway recommends to hikers the "湯の山温泉協会パーキングセンター(1000円/トイレあり)" (Yunoyama Onsen Association Parking Center, ¥1,000, toilets) and the free town lots 割谷駐車場 and 蒼滝公共駐車場; Sotaki is about 25 minutes on foot from the Ura-michi trailhead.
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Kintetsu Yunoyama-Onsen Station, then Mie Kotsu bus | Yokkaichi IC (CLIMBING-net) or Komono IC (ropeway, hut) |
| Get off / park | "湯の山温泉・御在所ロープウエイ前" | Free spaces around the Ura-michi trailhead (about 3 + 10 + 20, Komono Tourism Association) |
| To trailhead | 20–30 min walk | Right there |
| To the crag | About 1 hour via Tonai Hut to Test Rock | Same |
| Watch for | Timetables on the ropeway site | Fills early on weekends; don't park along the Suzuka Skyline |
Autumn traffic controls (announced each year)
During the autumn-color season, weekend traffic controls are announced each year by Gozaisho Ropeway and the Komono Tourism Association. In 2025 they ran "2025/10/25~11/24(土・日・祝日のみ/9:00~15:00)" (weekends and holidays only, 9:00–15:00) at the north end of the Kamoshika Bridge (湯の山温泉・かもしか大橋(北詰)) via Route 477, enforced by Yokkaichi-Nishi Police; the same page says controls also apply on other days when the ropeway lot is full. These controls target traffic into the hot-spring town and the ropeway; the notice does not say whether they affect the Ura-michi trailhead parking. If you drive on an autumn weekend, read that year's notice first.
Rules and safety before you go
- Naka-michi closed, Ura-michi open: Kanko Mie says "【2025年5月25日~】おばれ岩崩壊の危険により、『中道コース』が当面の間、通行止めとなっています" (from 25 May 2025 the Naka-michi course is closed for the time being because Obare-iwa may collapse). The Gozaisho Ropeway notice directs hikers to "うら登山道、おもて登山道、とうげ登山道、一の谷新道" instead. Neither page, read on 2026-10-12, says the closure has been lifted. The Ura-michi trail climbers use is not affected.
- Loose rock above the first gully: CLIMBING-net warns "一ルンゼ上部では何度か崩壊があり不安定な浮石があるので注意が必要" (the upper part of the first gully has collapsed several times and has unstable loose rock).
- Fixed gear: CLIMBING-net says "プロテクション、ビレイポイント、下降支点も整備されている" (protection, belay anchors, and rappel anchors are maintained), and natural gear makes the crack routes more comfortable.
- California Dreaming, pitch 4: Mountain Project says the 4th pitch of this 5-pitch sport route is around 5.12d technical slab, so "be ready to aid if you're committed to going all the way up." ROCKTOPO lists the route's "最高グレード 5.12a" (top grade 5.12a). The two sites disagree.
- Phone signal: Tonai Hut says "藤内小屋は電話回線が通じておらず、携帯電話も限られたポイントでしかつながりません" (the hut has no phone line and mobiles only work at a few spots).
- Water: CLIMBING-net says "北谷本流の水は飲用には不適なので枝沢からの水を利用する" (the main Kitadani stream is not fit to drink; use the side streams).
- Descents and weather: none of the sources read for this post describe how to descend each multi-pitch or when to bail for weather. Check the guidebook, the ROCKTOPO route pages, or ask at Tonai Hut.
- Registration and fees: the ROCKTOPO, CLIMBING-net, and Kanko Mie pages read for this post mention no climber registration or access fee. The JFA access-issue list does not include Gozaisho.
Tonai Hut and staying overnight
Tonai Hut sits at the fourth station of the Ura-michi trail at 665 m and calls itself "藤内壁に一番近い山小屋" (the hut closest to Tonai-kabe). Opening days are given two ways:
- The hut's official blog (effective April 2025): "土・日曜、祝日のみ営業(宿泊は土曜、祝前日のみ)" (open Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays only; overnight stays on Saturdays and nights before holidays), with weekday groups of 5 or more by arrangement. Toilets are "100円(維持管理費/宿泊者は無料)" (¥100 maintenance fee, free for overnight guests).
- CLIMBING-net: "裏道登山道に日向小屋、藤内小屋があり金、土、日曜日に営業。平日は要予約" (Hinata Hut and Tonai Hut on the Ura-michi trail open Friday–Sunday; weekdays by reservation).
Go by the hut's own notice. For camping, CLIMBING-net says "キャンプサイトは藤内小屋、ウサギの耳周辺" (campsites around Tonai Hut and Usagi-no-mimi), but the hut pages read for this post say nothing about camping; ask the hut before planning to pitch a tent.
