Kasagi Boulders: Granite on the Kizu River, a Short Walk from the Station | Japan Climbing Crags

Oct 12, 20261 min
TL;DRGranite bouldering on the Kizu riverbed in Kasagi, Kyoto: 109 problems on ROCKTOPO (about 100 per CLIMBING-net), mostly 4-kyu to 1-kyu. Both sites list it as year-round, with CLIMBING-net warning that midwinter is harsh. It is a 5–10 minute walk from JR Kasagi Station on the Kansai Line; the boulders are free, but drivers park at the paid Kasagi Campground downstream.

Kasagi Boulders (笠置ボルダー) is a field of granite blocks on the Kizu River riverbed in Kasagi, Soraku District, Kyoto Prefecture. CLIMBING-net opens its entry by calling it one of the few crags you can reach by train ("電車による利用が可能な数少ない岩場のひとつ"): it is a few minutes on foot from JR Kasagi Station.

The bouldering area itself is free. The town's official tourism site describes it as the bouldering area spreading upstream of Kasagi Ohashi bridge ("笠置大橋上流に広がるボルダリングエリア") with a usage fee of "無料" (free). Driving is where the cost comes in: cars cannot enter the riverbed upstream of the bridge, so you park at Kasagi Campground downstream, which started charging for parking on October 1, 2026.

CLIMBING-net's summary: lots of fairly big boulders, good landings, and varied problems that work for beginners through advanced climbers ("大き目のボルダーが多いがランディングも良く、多彩なプロブレムは初級者から上級者まで楽しむことができる"). Mountain Project adds a note on the rock: despite being on a river, "the granite boulders have not been rubbed smooth by the water and provide good friction."

Problem count and grade spread (checked 2026-10-12)

The sites disagree, so here is each one:

  • ROCKTOPO (page name "京都笠置ボルダー"): 109 boulder problems. 10-kyu+: 13, 7-kyu+: 14, 4-kyu+: 33, 1-kyu-+: 21, shodan-+: 15, nidan-+: 5, sandan-+: 6, yondan-+: 1, godan-+: 1.
  • CLIMBING-net: "約100本" (about 100). Its notes say most problems date from 1990 ("ほとんどが1990年時点の課題") and that the kyu/dan grades were converted mechanically ("機械的に換算したもの").
  • Mountain Project: the description says "around 120 problems"; 36 are actually listed.
  • Kyoto Tourism Federation WMG guide: "約120のルート" (about 120).

ROCKTOPO puts all 109 problems in the "京都笠置 川エリア" (river area) sub-area, split into eight boulder groups. A second sub-area, "京都笠置 笠置寺エリア" (Kasagi-dera area), has no problems listed yet.

Mountain Project instead splits by river position: Downstream Boulders (21), Middle Stream Boulders (6), and Upstream Area (9).

Who it suits: 4-kyu to 1-kyu is the core, and there are only about a dozen problems at nidan and above. Climbers moving from the gym to outdoor bouldering have the most to choose from; anyone hunting hard projects will find few.

When to go

SourceSeason
CLIMBING-net"通年(真冬は寒さが厳しい)" (year-round; midwinter is harsh)
ROCKTOPONo season field; its monthly-ascents bar chart peaks in April, then November, then January, with zero in July and August

In practice:

  • Climbable all year. The riverbed is cold in deep winter, and CLIMBING-net says so directly.
  • ROCKTOPO's chart counts user-logged ascents from a small sample. It shows when people tend to go, not an official recommendation. None of the sources read for this guide say how hot summer gets or how long the rock takes to dry after rain.
  • Heavy rain and high water. The boulders sit on the riverbed. The town's campground rules (ご利用の注意事項, revised R6.10.25, i.e. October 25, 2024) say the campground is closed to users ("ご利用をお断りします") whenever the Japan Meteorological Agency issues a warning or special warning ("警報・特別警報レベル以上") for the area. That rule covers the campground; the official sources read here don't state a separate closure rule for the boulders. Still, if the parking lot is shut for weather, skip the trip.

Getting there

By train

  • Take the JR Kansai Main Line to Kasagi Station (笠置駅). Walking time to the boulders: CLIMBING-net says "徒歩5分" (5 minutes), the town tourism site says "徒歩約10分" (about 10), and Mountain Project says "a short 10 minute walk."
  • Travel times from major cities: the town's access page (dated 2008) gives about 1 h 30 min from Kyoto (via the JR Nara Line and Kizu), about 1 h from Osaka (JR Yamatoji / Kansai Line), and about 30 min from Nara. Mountain Project says about 1.5 h from Osaka and 1.25 h from Kyoto. The two don't match, so check a journey planner before you go.

By car

  • Route: CLIMBING-net says it is a straight run on Route 163 from Osaka, and from Kyoto you head south on Route 24 and switch to 163 ("大阪からは国道163号線で1本。京都からは国道24号で南下し163号へ"). The Kasagi Campground operator gives "国道24号線山城から国道163号線で14km" (14 km on Route 163 from Yamashiro on Route 24) and about 30 minutes from Yamadagawa IC (「山田川」I.C.) on the Keinawa Expressway.
  • Parking: the ROCKTOPO parking page says to use the campground lot and that it is paid ("キャンプ場の駐車場を利用する。有料。"). CLIMBING-net also notes the riverside Kasagi Campground has parking and toilets.
  • No driving onto the boulder side: the town's campground page says the riverbed upstream of Kasagi Ohashi is free but closed to cars ("木津川笠置大橋上流河川敷は無料です。ただし車は入れません。").
  • The campground entrance is narrow: the operator's FAQ says only regular-size cars fit ("普通車程度しか入れません") and that a step at the entrance keeps out low-clearance cars.

Kasagi Campground fees (checked 2026-10-12)

The operator, 株式会社一 (Ichi Co.), announced new prices from October 1, 2026, including a newly introduced parking fee ("駐車料金を新たに導入"):

ItemDay use (until 17:00)
Usage fee, adult (junior high and up)¥800 per person
Usage fee, elementary school¥400 per person
Parking, car¥1,000 per vehicle
Parking, motorcycle¥500 per vehicle
Bicycle or on footNo parking fee
  • Reception runs 8:00–17:00. Day users who stay past 17:00 are charged the overnight rate. On Fridays, Saturdays and the day before a holiday, reception runs to 19:00 (18:00 in winter).
  • These are campground fees. Whether climbers who only park there also pay the per-person usage fee on top of parking isn't addressed on the operator's site; ask at reception.
  • The town's campground page (July 1, 2025 version) and the official tourism site still show the old adult rate of ¥500 and no parking fee. Go by the operator's 2026 notice, and recheck before you go.

Rules to know before you go

  • Free, no registration. The town tourism site lists the fee as "無料"; the town's English sightseeing page says "Charge: Free". None of the sources read mention registration or a contribution fee.
  • No camping at the boulders. CLIMBING-net's lodging field says "岩場周辺では不可" (not allowed around the crag). Stay at Kasagi Campground instead.
  • No cars on the riverbed upstream of the bridge (see above).
  • Campground rules (apply if you park or camp): the town's rules say open fires on the ground are banned throughout ("キャンプ場内は全面直火禁止") and fireworks are banned ("花火は禁止"). On October 1, 2026 the operator added bans including moving stones ("石の移動"), engine idling and car stereos, and holding a spot for more than three hours, plus a quiet time from 21:00 to 7:00.
  • Stay out of the water. The operator says the current near the campground is fast and very dangerous, and swimming is not recommended ("流れが早く、たいへん危険です。遊泳はおすすめできません"); the town's rules note that fatal drownings have happened ("水難死亡事故が発生しています").
  • Trash: the town's campground page asks visitors to take trash home ("ゴミの減量のため、持ち帰りにご協力ください").
  • JFA: as of 2026-10-12, the JFA nationwide access-issue list does not include Kasagi Boulders. JFA notes the list is simplified and asks climbers to check local websites and social media for current information.

Notable problems

  • ROCKTOPO's "popular problem" ("人気の課題") for the river sub-area is フィネス (4-kyu) at 大ハング岩周辺 (ROCKTOPO river area).
  • Mountain Project's classics list for Kasagi Boulders has just two, both on the Large Overhang (大ハング岩): Jumping Heel Hook (ジャンピングヒールフック, V2-3), which ROCKTOPO also lists at 大ハング岩周辺, and Southern Back Big Lunge (V5-6), whose Japanese name is cut off on the list as "南裏の大ランジ…".
  • User logs on ROCKTOPO's main page also mention 空間チムニー and 時の流れに背を向けて (親指君の岩・大スラブ周辺), あしか (クリオネ周辺), and トンネルホール左 (大ハング岩周辺). Look up their grades in ROCKTOPO's route table.

The town's involvement

Kasagi has made bouldering part of its tourism pitch. According to the Kyoto Tourism Federation's WMG guide, the town produced a bouldering film, "笠置ROCK!", in 2016, and the club "京都笠置クライミングクラブ" (Kyoto Kasagi Climbing Club) was founded in 2018. The club organizes a cleanup of the boulders every November that draws about 150 people, followed by a bouldering safety session that afternoon. The page gives no yearly schedule, so check that year's announcement for the date.
