Zakkokudani (雑穀谷, ざっこくだに; reading per ROCKTOPO) is a side valley of the Shomyo River in Tateyama Town, Toyama Prefecture, and the crag sits right off the prefectural road to Shomyo Falls. The rock is granite, mostly bolted sport routes with a handful of cracks. CLIMBING-net calls it "富山県では数少ないフリークライミング中心の岩場" (one of the few free-climbing-focused crags in Toyama).
The one thing to understand before deciding: the crag is inside the Katsuradai gate (桂台ゲート) on the Shomyo Road. That gate is shut all winter, and during the open season it is unlocked only in daytime and locked at night. Season, driving, and whether you can stay overnight all hinge on that gate.
What kind of crag is it
| Item | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Tateyama Town, Toyama; a tributary of the Shomyo River | CLIMBING-net, Gendarme Alpine Club |
| Rock | Granite | CLIMBING-net |
| Angle | 90 degrees | CLIMBING-net |
| Size | About 50 routes (CLIMBING-net); 51 (ROCKTOPO) | See below |
| History | Featured in Iwa to Yuki no. 124 in 1987, then forgotten; redeveloped in 1996–1997 by Shintaro Yoneshima and Yasuomi Kawakita | CLIMBING-net |
| Guidebook | CLIMBING-net lists the "Tokai/Kansai" volume | CLIMBING-net |
CLIMBING-net numbers it "100岩場 No.72" and tags it "beginner/intermediate OK", "lead (bolts)", and "lead (crack)". The Gendarme Alpine Club, whose site introduces Toyama rock climbing, calls it the center of climbing in Toyama: "初心者から上級者まで練習できるバランスのとれた岩場で、富山県山岳警備隊も訓練に使っている場所です" (a balanced crag for beginners through advanced climbers, also used for training by the Toyama Prefectural Police mountain rescue unit).
Route count and grades (checked 2026-10-12)
- CLIMBING-net: "about 50 routes", no grade breakdown.
- ROCKTOPO route list: 51 routes. 46 face: 1 ungraded, 12 at 5.2+, 21 at 5.10a+, 7 at 5.11a+, 5 at 5.12a+. 5 crack: 1 at 5.2+, 3 at 5.10a+, 1 at 5.12a+. The hardest is Willy Willy (ウィリーウィリー) at 5.12c.
ROCKTOPO splits it into four sectors:
| Sector | Type and count | Difficulty (ROCKTOPO: E easy / M medium / H hard) |
|---|---|---|
| A・Bフェイス付近 (A/B faces) | 11 face, 1 crack | E 11, M 1 |
| オラッチャロック左 (Oraccha Rock left) | 8 face, 2 crack | E 6, M 3, H 1 |
| 松ノ木フェイス (Matsunoki face) | 11 face | E 9, M 2 |
| オラッチャロック正面 (Oraccha Rock front) | 16 face, 2 crack | E 7, M 6, H 5 |
The Gendarme Alpine Club divides it a little differently: the right side of the A face has beginner routes; the B face is good for multi-pitch practice; the C face (堰堤フェイス, the dam face) is shorter than A but harder; and Oraccha Rock, with "about 20 routes", is the main wall, with a small clearing below to gear up.
Who it suits: the 5.10s are the core, there are six 5.12s (five face, one crack), and E-grade routes dominate. New outdoor leaders have plenty to do; anyone hunting for 5.12+ projects will find few. There are only five cracks, but the club notes that チャック (Chuck, 5.10a) is "チョックの練習にはちょうどよい" (just right for practicing chocks), so bring a rack if you want to place gear.
When to go
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| CLIMBING-net (crag page) | Season "4月上旬~11月末" (early April to end of November) |
| ROCKTOPO | No season field on this crag's page |
| Toyama Kanko Navi (official prefectural tourism site) | Shomyo Road (Katsuradai gate – Shomyodaira parking – Hiryu Bridge) open "4月下旬~11月下旬" (late April to late November), "積雪状況による" (depending on snow), closed in winter |
The two start dates are about two weeks apart: CLIMBING-net says early April, the official road period says late April. Whether you can actually drive in depends on when the Shomyo Road opens that year.
- Winter (outside the open period, roughly late November to late April): the Shomyo Road is closed and cars can't get in. Kanko Navi says the open period depends on snow; check the prefecture and Tateyama Town for each year's actual opening date.
- Spring (late April–May): snow may linger around the crag right after opening. A climbing log from 2 May 2018 says "残雪がまだ残っていて" (there was still leftover snow), and part of the rock was wet after overnight rain.
- Summer: Tateyama Town says the gate is open 6:00–19:00 in July and August, the longest climbing window of the year.
- November: the Tateyama Town tourism page says "11月は道路状況によって閉門が早まる場合があります" (in November the gate may close earlier depending on road conditions).
- Rain: the road closes at "連続雨量70mm、時間雨量30mm/h、風速30m" (70 mm cumulative rain, 30 mm/h, or 30 m/s wind), per Toyama Prefecture.
Getting there
Where the crag is
CLIMBING-net's access note: "立山称名道路、桂台料金所から車で3分。岩場のすぐ横に駐車可能" (on the Tateyama Shomyo Road, 3 minutes' drive from the Katsuradai tollgate; parking right next to the crag).
Toyama Prefecture describes the Shomyo Road as the prefectural road "桂台から称名滝付近の飛龍橋までを結ぶ" (from Katsuradai to Hiryu Bridge near Shomyo Falls), and says "桂台地点にゲートを設け、夜間と荒天時は通行規制(通行止)します" (a gate at Katsuradai closes the road at night and in bad weather). So a crag three minutes' drive from Katsuradai is inside the gate.
The road-exploration site Yama sa Ikaganega walked it in May 2026 and gives a matching picture: the Shomyo Road starts at Katsuradai at 660 m, "雑穀谷が600m先" (Zakkokudani is 600 m ahead); from the valley entrance it's about a five-minute walk up to the wall; and below the wall there is "広い駐車スペースがあり、クライマーたちに解放されているような感じ" (a wide parking area that seems open to climbers). A personal log on ike.official.jp describes the approach as "称名川雑穀谷出合から300mほど林道を上る" (about 300 m up a forest road from the Zakkokudani–Shomyo River confluence), at 770 m elevation.
By car
- Katsuradai gate hours (Toyama Prefecture, updated 2026-09-01): 7:00–18:00 in April–June and September–November; 6:00–19:00 in July–August. From 1 September 2026 the hours went back from 6:00–19:00 to 7:00–18:00, and the prefecture notes "道路状況等によって開門時間が変更になる場合があります" (hours may change depending on road conditions).
- Parking: CLIMBING-net says you can park right beside the crag. ROCKTOPO's "Zakkokudani parking" page is marked "仮登録の情報です" (provisional entry) with no capacity or fee.
- Expressway: Toyama Kanko Navi gives about 50 minutes from Tateyama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway to Shomyo Falls. The crag is short of the falls, but none of the sources read give a time from the interchange to the crag.
- Navigation: for Shomyo Falls, Tateyama Town says to set "称名平駐車場" (Shomyodaira parking) as your destination, since "称名滝" may route you differently (Tateyama Town). For the crag itself, use ROCKTOPO's coordinates or CLIMBING-net's description.
By public transport
- The nearest station is Tateyama Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway. Tateyama Town's Shomyo Falls sightseeing bus (称名滝探勝バス) runs from Tateyama Station to the falls.
- The 2026 timetable PDF (linked from Tateyama Town's tourism page) gives the service period as "2026年5月11日(予定)~11月10日" (11 May 2026 (planned) to 10 November) and lists only two stops, Tateyama-Ekimae and Shomyo Falls. Whether you can get on or off near Zakkokudani is not stated anywhere I found; ask Tateyama Town's Commerce and Tourism Division (076-462-9971). The service period is announced every year on the Tateyama Town tourism page.
- The same timetable says the whole line is suspended when the Shomyo Road is closed for rainfall or similar.
- None of the sources read give a walking distance or time from Tateyama Station to the crag.
| By car | By public transport | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Hokuriku Expressway Tateyama IC → Katsuradai | Toyama Chiho Railway Tateyama Station |
| Key constraint | Enter and leave only during gate hours | Bus timetable lists no intermediate stop |
| Parking / drop-off | Beside the crag (CLIMBING-net) | No stop near the crag found |
| When you can't go | Winter closure, night, rainfall closures | Bus suspended whenever the road is closed |
Rules and things to know before you go
- Be out before the gate closes: Tateyama Town says that after closing "時間外の解錠は管理人が不在となるため行いません" (no after-hours unlocking, as no attendant is present). In an emergency you call a local taxi company to unlock it, and "救援に係るタクシーの費用は自己負担となります" (you pay the taxi cost). A September 2026 climbing log describes packing up to head to the inn and finding "道路のゲートが閉まっている!!" (the road gate was shut), adding "18時にゲートが閉まる、と書いてあったけど完全に見落としてました" (it said the gate closes at 18:00, but we completely missed it).
- Rainfall closures: the road closes at 70 mm cumulative rain, 30 mm/h, or 30 m/s wind. Tateyama Town adds that guards and cameras monitor the road and it is closed "速やかに" (promptly) on abnormal rain or slope movement (Tateyama Town).
- Bears: Tateyama Town reports "2026年5月14日午後2時頃、称名滝遊歩道においてクマによる人身被害が発生しました" (a person was injured by a bear on the Shomyo Falls walkway around 2 p.m. on 14 May 2026) and asks visitors to carry bear spray, bells, or a radio and pack out all trash. That was on the walkway further upstream, but it is the same valley.
- Camping and toilets: CLIMBING-net says you can camp in the "岩場前の広場" (clearing in front of the crag), with toilets at Shomyo Falls parking, the Katsuradai tollgate, and Tateyama Station. CLIMBING-net also says "川の水も飲用可能と思われる" (the river water is probably drinkable). That is a guess; don't rely on it instead of carrying water. The gate is locked at night, so camping inside means you can't drive out until it opens in the morning.
- Erosion-control works: the valley is lined with check dams. Yama sa Ikaganega reports "崩落と工事による立入制限" (access restrictions upstream due to collapses and construction) and visible no-entry barriers from the works. Stay within the crag; don't wander upstream.
- JFA: the Japan Free Climbing Association's access-issue list (checked 2026-10-12) does not list Zakkokudani.
- Registration and fees: none of the CLIMBING-net, ROCKTOPO, prefectural, or Tateyama Town pages read mention registration or a climbing fee. Kanko Navi lists Shomyodaira parking as "駐車料金:無料" (free), but that is the falls car park, not the space beside the crag.
Notable routes
ROCKTOPO's popular routes (Zakkokudani page, 2026-10-12):
- ジョーズ (Jaws, 5.10d): Oraccha Rock front. On ROCKTOPO's route list it has the most climbers logged (8) and the highest score (30) at the crag.
- 不二越 (Fujikoshi, 5.10a): Oraccha Rock front.
- スーパークラック (Super Crack, 5.10c): a crack on Oraccha Rock front. The Tokyo Midori Alpine Club wrote in 2016 that the Japan 100 Crags topo rarely gives four stars, yet Zakkokudani has two such routes; their list marks both Jaws and Super Crack "★★★★".
- 堰堤ルート (Entei Route, 5.9): Oraccha Rock left. The Tokyo Midori Alpine Club says it starts from the top of a check dam and is a "ロープスケール25m強のロングルート" (a long route needing a bit over 25 m of rope).
The 5.12s: ウルトラマン(スーパーカンテ), ザ・スラブ, and アタックNo.1 (all 5.12a, Oraccha Rock front); 地獄行き (5.12a, Oraccha Rock left); サワコ (5.12a, crack); and ウィリーウィリー (5.12c).
