Elba (Isola d'Elba) is the large island off the coast of Tuscany and part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Almost every crag in central Italy is limestone, but the western half of Elba is granite, with crags scattered along the shore and the hillsides, and many people combine climbing with an island holiday.
This guide covers what to decide before you go: whether the routes suit you, which months to go, how to get onto the island and to the crags without a car, and which sectors have bolts you can no longer trust. For a seasonal and regional comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview; elsewhere in Tuscany are Camaiore and Capo d'Uomo on Monte Argentario.
What kind of crag is it
Granite, mostly mid-grade single pitches. Climb Europe says the island has everything from bolted sea cliffs to multi-pitch routes, mostly F5 to low F7. Its Tuscany page counts 8 crags, mostly single-pitch sport, with the longest bolted multi-pitch routes on Monte San Bartolomeo at about 170 m. The mountain guide Bergführer Dolomiten adds that the rock is mainly granite, and volcanic on the Costa dei Gabbiani in the south-east.
Main sectors. The tourism portal infoelba publishes a selection of the island's crags compiled by Renato Bardi, an instructor with the Italian climbing federation (FASI):
| Sector | Location | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Monte San Bartolomeo | Above Chiessi, west coast | Two tiers: multi-pitch on the lower tier, mostly single pitches on the upper, with a short via ferrata alongside; infoelba's topo runs to 27 |
| Fetovaia | Below the road from Seccheto to Fetovaia, south-west | Four sectors, routes up to 15 m; sector 3 is the best |
| La Freccia | Above Pomonte, west coast | An arrow-shaped wall with a few three-pitch routes |
| Madonna del Monte | Above Marciana, north-west | Big boulders beside a pilgrimage path; bouldering too |
| Ginepro and others | Costa dei Gabbiani, south-east | Beach-side walls on a private estate (see the rules) |
Scale. theCrag lists 27 routes on San Bartolomeo, 5a to 7c; Climbook, updated from the 2025 guidebook, has 33 entries (each pitch of a multi-pitch counted separately). No source totals the routes across the island.
Who it suits. Climbers in the 5th and 6th grades who want to fit climbing into an island holiday. It does not suit people looking for hard lines above 7c, or who need lots of trustworthy bolts.
When to go
| Place | Source | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Tuscany overall | Climb Europe | Spring and autumn are best |
| San Bartolomeo | SiViaggia | South-facing; climbable in winter on calm days |
| San Bartolomeo upper tier | Bergführer Dolomiten | North-facing, about 400 m above sea level; watch for lichen |
| Madonna del Monte | SiViaggia | Shaded spots, climbable in summer |
The two sources disagree on which way San Bartolomeo faces; the two tiers may face differently. Check the guidebook before you go.
Wet lichen is slippery. Bergführer Dolomiten says granite away from the sea is often covered in lichen and becomes very slippery when wet, as at Madonna del Monte and on the San Bartolomeo via ferrata and lower tier. After rain or in mist, take extra care on the approach paths and on the rock.
Getting there
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| To the port | Train to Piombino Marittima (the port station), or to Campiglia Marittima and the connecting bus | Drive to the port of Piombino |
| To the island | Ferry Piombino → Portoferraio, about 1 hour | Cars go on the ferry |
| On the island | Autolinee Toscane line 116 to Chiessi, Pomonte and Fetovaia on the west coast | About 30 km from Portoferraio to Chiessi |
Public transport
Train. Trenitalia says Piombino Marittima station is right on the passenger port; you can also travel to Campiglia Marittima and take the connecting bus from the station forecourt to the port, on a single train-plus-bus ticket. When booking, choose Piombino Marittima as the destination, not Piombino.
Ferry. Three operators run Piombino to Portoferraio: Toremar, Moby and Blu Navy. Blu Navy's timetable page says it alone runs more than 8 crossings a day in summer and winter, taking about an hour; foot passengers must check in at least 15 minutes before departure, and 30 minutes with a vehicle (checked October 2026). Toremar also sails to Cavo and Rio Marina on the east of the island.
Island bus. Autolinee Toscane line 116 leaves from the Portoferraio harbour front and runs via Marciana to Chiessi and Pomonte, then via Fetovaia and Seccheto to Marina di Campo, passing every west-coast crag. Check the last bus back before you set out.
For the beach crags on the Costa dei Gabbiani, infoelba describes about 10 km of dirt road from Capoliveri to near the Tenuta delle Ripalte estate, so in practice you need a car.
Driving and parking
- San Bartolomeo: infoelba says to drive from Portoferraio toward Procchio and Marina di Campo, then via Cavoli, Seccheto, Fetovaia and Pomonte, about 30 km to Chiessi, and park in the church square or the car park below the road on the left. The granite steps in front of the church are CAI path 103; the walk takes about 45 minutes. Bergführer Dolomiten warns that partway up an old climbing sign points to the lower tier (rusty bolts); ignore it and carry on along path 103a to the upper tier.
- Fetovaia: there are several parking spots along the road from Seccheto to Fetovaia; from the second you reach sectors 1 and 2, from the third sector 3, and from the fourth sector 4 (infoelba).
- La Freccia: the road to the right of the Pomonte church leads to the car park; the path starts over a small bridge. If it is full, there is a gravel car park about 200 m further on (infoelba).
- Madonna del Monte: in Marciana follow the yellow "Museo Archeologico" sign, then the cobbled path up toward the Madonna del Monte church (infoelba).
Rules to know before you go
The bolts are the main problem. infoelba itself says it is hard to get up-to-date information on routes, bolts and lower-offs on the island: many sectors see few climbers and take the full force of the sea air, so always check the gear yourself. What the sources report:
| Sector | Source | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| San Bartolomeo multi-pitch | Climbook (updated April 2026) | 3 routes recently rebolted (111 e lode, Via dei gigli martagoni, Via dei veci); 6 other multi-pitch routes are dangerous, need rebolting and are not marked |
| San Bartolomeo | theCrag | User warning: rusty anchors and some bolts, "I would not recommend it"; the path to sector 1 is not easy |
| San Bartolomeo upper tier | Bergführer Dolomiten (November 2021) | Stainless bolts, but rusty chains and karabiners at the lower-offs; 12 of 15 routes climbable |
| Baia dei Pirati, Remaiolo | Bergführer Dolomiten | Reports in 2025 of rusty bolts breaking |
| Sant'Andrea | Bergführer Dolomiten (November 2021) | Old rusty bolts, not climbable |
| Fetovaia | infoelba | Most routes end at two glue-in bolts with no lowering ring; bring slings |
Bergführer Dolomiten's advice: always thread the rope yourself at the anchor and abseil or lower from the bolts, never straight off rusty karabiners or quick links.
The Costa dei Gabbiani is on a private estate. infoelba says the Ginepro, Remaiolo and Baia dei Pirati area is private land belonging to the Tenuta delle Ripalte, with regulated access. Report to the estate reception before going in; the bolts on the walls were not placed by the estate. The tracks to the beaches are closed with chains, and Ginepro is about a 20-minute walk from near the estate.
National park. Most of Elba lies in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park; the park's list of regulations has no section on climbing.
Rescue. The Tuscan mountain and cave rescue service (SAST) says to call 112 in the mountains and ask explicitly for mountain rescue (CNSAS); give your location and phone number, and keep the line free afterwards.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Routes and grades below come mainly from infoelba's topos; for the San Bartolomeo multi-pitch routes, the pitch grades are from Climbook's update based on the 2025 guidebook. A route listed here does not mean its bolts are sound; read the condition table above first.
