East Malaysia has only a handful of climbing spots, and Fairy Caves is the one with the most complete information: nine sectors, 88 routes, named lines, consistent hardware, and less than an hour from Kuching. The catch is that most of the rules here live between people rather than on notice boards — closures without announcements, two versions of the fee, and a start that depends on a local.
This guide helps you work out which walls are open, how to reach them from Kuching, what the current fee and closure picture is, and what to prepare for a first visit.
What kind of crag
Fairy Cave is a limestone cave, Gunung Sireh is the hill, and Bau village sits at its foot. The reserve is managed by Sarawak Forestry Corporation, whose page notes that Batman Wall is managed by the local community and popular with climbers because of its overhangs and its range of route grades. The theCrag Fairy Cave area page lists 88 routes, 1,904 ascents and an FR range of 5a to 8c, at coordinates 1.383727, 110.118218 and elevations from 18 to 235 m. Mountain Project's version of the same area is a copy shared on 2011-11-02 by Glen Charnoski, listing five main sectors with older route counts (Batman 20, Fairy Cave Wall 1, Nepenthes 4, Stage 4, Zoo 4) and a reminder that there is no food or water at the caves.
Sector sizes (theCrag, 2026-10-21): Batman 49, Tiger 13, The Groove 5, Zoo 4, Nepenthes 4, Stage 4, Staircase 3, Fairy Cave Wall 3, Orchid 3.
Batman Wall is the centre of gravity: the theCrag Batman Wall page records 49 routes from 6a to 8c, 22 m tall, with 1,601 ascents. The wall is steep and overhung with a large roof, while the surrounding walls mix vertical and slabby ground. theCrag calls the place the "crown jewel among Sarawak's climbing places" — the language of a community database.
The style is sport climbing. The hardware theCrag records is stainless glue-in bolts throughout, double-bolt chain anchors and two permanent keylock carabiners, so you clip and lower off. Apart from the two multipitch routes in front of the cave entrance, most lines run 12 to 33 m. It suits teams who want fixed draws and a few multipitch pitches without carrying a trad rack; it does not suit anyone who pictures cave climbing as a lit, topo'd, guide-supported venue.
When to go
Aspect is the first variable here: every sector faces south except the west-facing Zoo Wall.
- All-day shade May to September (theCrag).
- October to April the walls catch sun, though trees give some shade.
- December to April is the heavy-rain season and the rock gets wet.
- The Batman and Stage walls stay climbable through heavy rain because the roof shades them, until about 1 pm in December.
A 2023 round-up simply advises against coming between December and February. The theCrag Batman Wall page also describes the wall as south-west facing, with afternoon sun and the wall staying dry when it rains.
Getting there
Public transport
Bus No. 2 leaves Kuching for Bau from 6 am. The remaining 9 km can be covered by bus, minivan (RM2.50), taxi or hitching. A taxi takes about 30 minutes from Kuching to Bau and another 15 minutes to the caves. The 2023 round-up spells this route out and mentions meeting Kuching Climbers at weekends, while Mountain Project notes that Kuching climbers carpool on Sundays.
Driving
The drive from Kuching takes about 45 to 60 minutes over 30 to 50 km, depending on the source (some pages say 30 km, others 50 km; the 2026 visitor information says "roughly 40 minutes"). The last section is steps: the Sarawak Forestry reserve page says Fairy Cave is 8 km from Wind Cave and is reached by concrete steps.
Parking
Parking information is not in this material; the entrance serves the reserve's visitor traffic rather than a dedicated climbing car park. Batman Wall itself sits on fenced private land according to the 2023 round-up, so whether you can drive in and where to leave the car are questions for locals on the day.
Rules before you go
Closures. The Fairy Cave Wall and Nepenthes Wall are tagged Closed on theCrag, with the reason given as closure under new legislation by Sarawak Forestry. The theCrag Fairy Cave Wall page still lists the wall's 3 routes and their pitches. No closure date and no legal instrument are published, and the Sarawak Forestry reserve page carries no closure notice. The Zoo Wall sits inside Red Turn Mini Zoo, where the theCrag note is a renovation closure from September 2014, and its present status is not stated.
Fees. Cave entry is "around RM1" in the 2026 visitor information, while the 2023 round-up paid RM10; walls inside the reserve are quoted separately at RM1 for citizens and RM5 for foreigners. Batman Wall is community-managed, and the two theCrag pages disagree: the Batman Wall page says RM15 per climber per day since 2015, with Daniel (+60 137804548) as the contact, while the area page says RM50 for two people, RM100 for up to ten and RM200 for larger groups, with Joseph (+60138085516) as the contact, and that fee-and-contact text looks like it dates from around 2014. Both figures are worth carrying, and the answer belongs to whoever is on the wall on the day.
Etiquette. The wall has a single ground-up start (Two Egg Bacon Burger); every other route needs a "Batman start", where you clip-stick the first bolt and a partner hoists the leader. The 2023 round-up describes the two 2-pitch routes before the cave entrance (6b and 6b+) as needing the same move plus a 4 m stick clip. Without a local, finding routes is hard — only some lines are labelled.
Bolts and anchors. The hardware theCrag records is stainless glue-in bolts throughout, with double-bolt chain anchors and two permanent keylock carabiners: clip and lower off. First bolting was done in 1999 by an Australian team organised by Malcolm and Eunice Jitam with state funding, Ch'ien Lee and Glenn MacNair added lines afterwards, and Alexander Hölke developed most of the wall between 2007 and 2020. Rama-Rama (6c+, 40 m) carries an anchor warning, and Boleh Bah Kalau Kau (6a) has had its anchor removed and is marked do not climb.
Opening hours. The ilovesarawak page on Fairy Cave and Wind Cave, published June 2026 and updated August 2026, gives 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, last entry 3pm, with a 200-visitor cap per time slot. Climbing has to fit those hours, and Monday is the closed day.
Contacts and emergencies. The Batman Wall contact is Daniel (+60 137804548), and weekend access runs through the Kuching Climbers community. Call 999 in an emergency. The crag sits close to Kuching but is remote itself, and no hospital or rescue arrangement is published for the area; Kuching is the nearest city with hospital care, so allow for the time a serious injury takes to reach it. Ask your insurer separately about outdoor lead climbing, search and rescue, medical treatment and repatriation.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
The original grades here are French (theCrag's convention). The "Original grade" column keeps the source wording, the YDS column is the converted reference value, and the bands below follow the YDS. The table lists the named routes with full entries; Batman Wall holds 49 lines in total.
Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)
The area page gives an overall range of 5a to 8c, but the lowest route with a verifiable entry is 6b; which sectors hold the 5a to 6a lines is not documented, so no named route can be listed. The 6a route Boleh Bah Kalau Kau has had its anchor removed and is marked do not climb, which leaves this band without an open option.
Intermediate: 6a+ to 6c+ (YDS 5.10b–5.11c)
Happy Feet, Two Egg Bacon Burger and Meteorite are the three short lines that carry a label you can find on the ground. Fists Of Fairy on the cave wall is the only multipitch with complete pitch information, and that wall is currently closed.
| Route | Original grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Wall | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Happy Feet | 6b | 5.10c | 15 m, 7 bolts | Batman Wall | theCrag (2026-10-21): one of the labelled, locatable lines |
| Two Egg Bacon Burger | 6b+ | 5.10d | 12 m, 6 bolts | Batman Wall | theCrag (2026-10-21): the only ground-up start on the wall |

Advanced: 7a to 7c+ (YDS 5.11d–5.13a)
The upper grades on Batman Wall concentrate in the roof and the overhanging sections. Meet My Mother is the longest of the three, while Cicak and Johnny B. Goode both sit around 20 m.
| Route | Original grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Wall | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meet My Mother | 7a | 5.11d | 33 m, 18 bolts | Batman Wall | theCrag (2026-10-21) |
