Chong Phli, also called Spirit Mountain, sits on the Krabi mainland between Ao Nang and the town. theCrag logged 157 routes there on 21 October 2026, graded 4b+ to 9a, spread across ten sectors, with 5,889 ascents.
The big difference from North Wall next door: you can stay here. theCrag notes that "there is a homestay and community learning and development center directly at the crag with bungalows and possibility to set up your tent upon request. Activities such as yoga, sounds healing, nature therapy as well as permaculture workshops and ecology are available."
What kind of crag this is
Limestone. theCrag's summary: "Spirit Mountain is a beautiful cliff with sectors facing in all directions. Single pitch and routes up to 3 pitches in excellent quality."
This is the closest thing to a resort base on the Krabi mainland, and not only because of the lodging:
- The tags read Kid friendly, Camping, Drinking water and Toilets — all four are theCrag's practical markers.
- There is a homestay, bungalows and a tent pitch.
- Ten sectors face different directions, which means you can move from a shaded wall to a sunny one within a day.
Ten sectors
| Sector | Routes | Height | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Ego Free Zone / Main face | 32 | 25 m | The most routes, and the big tufa systems |
| The Lounge / Main face | 25 | 24 m | Home of Scorpion and Red Planet |
| The Mezzanine / Main face | 25 | 32 m | The hardest ground, 8a+ up to 8c+ |
| Machete Wall | 21 | 24 m | Two 8c-grade open projects |
| Hearth Cave | 15 | 16 m | The cave sector, 6a to 7c+ |
| The Cave / Hoi Cave | 11 | 16 m | |
| The Far Side | 10 | 18 m | A quieter area of its own |
| Music Wall | 8 | 18 m | Several lines off the big ledge |
| Sweet Brown Wall | 6 | 22 m | Only six routes but one is 8a |
| Wild Child Wall | 4 | 20 m | The smallest sector |
If you only have a day, The Lounge and The Mezzanine are the safe bet: lots of routes, a full grade spread, and everything from 6a to 8c+. Machete Wall is wilder (theCrag says you climb some steps to reach the starts), and The Far Side is a longer walk.
The long routes are what set it apart
Chong Phli's multipitch density is its real feature, and many lines run past 40 metres:
- Sumo King (8a+, 65 m): the extension of Kingpin, "this climb goes to the top"; all titanium.
- Family Affair (3 pitches, 127 m total): 32 m, then 40 m, then 55 m. theCrag notes you can "climb all in one 55 metre pitch from ground", and warns to re-tie your rope on the way down.
- Alien (7b+, 50 m): the extension of Hobbit Hop and Hobbit Jump, all the way up the thin black tufa.
- Free Blast (7b+, 40 m): from the Hobbit Jump anchor, head left across the face to the crack; you need an 80-metre rope to get back to the ground.
- Predator (8a, 40 m): the extension of Piranha, "beautiful dynamic face climbing leads to a tricky transition onto an amazing European-style…"
- Snow Leopard (8b): "spectacular moves following thin orange tufa fin up head wall! Mega-classic!"; starts up Exfoliation/Exposure.
- Scorpion Queen (8b+/c, 40 m): open project, same start as Scorpion.
- Mars Attacks (8c/c+, 40 m): open project, the extension of Red Planet; 80-metre rope, tie a knot in the end.
- Frankenstein (8c/c+, 30 m): Machete Wall's open project — "Epic climbing! Absolute Classic! Please try, open project!"
- monkey trail (5c, 100 m, 4 pitches): a nice multipitch 100 m from Machete Wall that reaches the top of the mountain.
Rope length is the thing to work out first. theCrag calls out 70-metre and 80-metre requirements in several places.
When to go
| Period | Conditions | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Nov–Feb | Dry season | The best window, and Krabi's peak season |
| Mar–May | Hot | The sectors face different ways, so pick a shaded one |
| Jun–Oct | Monsoon | Walls get wet, tufas especially |
Aspect is this crag's biggest advantage. theCrag says the sectors "face in all directions", and each sector's aspect field differs (The Lounge is a main face, Machete Wall and The Far Side carry their own tags). You can move from a shaded wall in the morning to a sunny one in the afternoon, and the other way round. That is much more useful than a crag that faces one direction all day.
Lodging means you do not have to rush. Stay at the crag and you can retreat to the homestay in the hottest part of the day, then go back out in the afternoon.
Getting there
Public transport
There is no public transport to the crag. Unlike North Wall, Chong Phli is not within walking distance of the town.
By car
theCrag's approach description is specific:
From Krabi take the road toward Ao Nang, go through Chong Phli and go past the turn off to Ao Nang. (The solitary karst on your right is Spirit Mountain.) Continue along the main road and after a few bends turn right into Soi Chong Phli 6. Once on Soi Chong Phli 6 turn right again after the first row of houses and down an orange dirt road to the crag.
Parking
The crag is at the end of the dirt road, beside the homestay and community centre, where you can also stay or pitch a tent. The community centre has drinking water and toilets.
Rules to know before you go
About 90% titanium, checked every year
This is Chong Phli's best feature. theCrag's Ethic field:
Chong Phli is approximately 90% titanium bolts. There are slings used for some routes because of soft rock, where they tend to be safer than bolts. All anchors and slings are checked yearly to make sure they are safe.
"Checked yearly" is the key phrase. That is not "climbers report the bolts here are titanium" — it is a maintenance regime. Compare Tonsai, where one route is all titanium and the one three metres away has rusty expansion bolts. Chong Phli is managed far better.
But note the slings. Some routes are protected with slings rather than bolts because the rock is soft. Soft rock also means the holds are not as dependable, and slings are consumable objects with a lifespan.
Private land
theCrag's access rules are unusually well-judged:
Access on the mainland is sensitive as climbing areas are on private land — please behave accordingly! Be respectful. Be polite. Pick up your trash.
This is the sister clause to North Wall's "respect the owners' property and privacy (house)". The direction is the same, but Chong Phli adds one more instruction: take your rubbish with you.
No drilling
Inherited from Krabi Mainland's Ethic, the same as North Wall: drilling, chipping and "enhancement" of rock is forbidden.
Notes on a few routes
- Scorpion (7b): "Climb 'Pill Box' to the last bolt, then go right and up. Two bolts before the anchor, take the left lines into…"
- Scorpion (Direct) (8a): "Same climb as 'Scorpion', just don't use the manufactured four finger pocket." Ice-9 (7a+) and Ice-9 (Direct) carry the same note — one of the holds has been "enhanced" in place, which affects the fairness of the route.
- Red Planet (8a, 33 m) is the second pitch of Pill Box, with only 5 titanium bolts.
- Middle Path (7c, 32 m) is the extension of Kaeng Raeng, and needs a 70-metre rope.
- Momentum (6b+, 32 m): "the second line on the huge tufa system. Anchor right next to 'Deflowered'. Maybe stick-clip the first sling."
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
The tables come from theCrag's sector pages, read 21 October 2026, covering The Lounge, The Mezzanine, The Ego Free Zone, Machete Wall, The Far Side and Sweet Brown Wall.

Where to look things up
- Online databases: theCrag's Chong Phli page has all 157 routes, the ten sectors, the approach, the accommodation note and the bolt-maintenance statement. Each sector page carries per-route grades, stars, lengths, anchors and bolt notes. This is one of the most complete online datasets in the series.
- Lodging and contact: Spirit Mountain's Facebook is the homestay and community centre's official contact (theCrag's Where to stay section points straight at it) and the place to ask about bungalows, camping and the workshops.
- Guidebooks: grades and route counts here come mainly from online databases; the guidebook is the authority. theCrag specifically notes that the 2026 edition of The Pocket Guide updated the topos and photos for Chong Phli and North Wall — The Pocket Guide – Thailand (10th edition, 2026-01, 238 pages, 1,000 THB) and King Climbers (10th edition, 2025, which includes Ao-Nang Mainland's Chong Phli and North Wall).
- Bolt maintenance: theCrag says all anchors and slings are checked yearly. Krabi Bolting Fund maintains the bolts on the Krabi mainland — the setters of KGB Extreme even list "DnD & #krabiboltingfund".
