Arigasayama is a rhyolite sport destination in Gunma known for steep walls, roofs and endurance, with east/west approaches to choose before the day. This guide helps you decide whether it suits your team, when to visit and what to confirm about transport and the approach.

What kind of crag

The rock is rhyolite (crag description); the readable ROCKTOPO inventory has 209 graded entries. Its scope differs from a complete guidebook.

CLIMBING-net and ROCKTOPO have different inventory scopes. A database count does not establish that every route is currently accessible. Sectors remain within this destination; choose the day’s objective and descent before planning equipment.

When to go

The publisher lists April–November and ROCKTOPO March–November. Summer condensation can defeat a rain-sheltered roof: choose sectors around sun, humidity and recent rain.

Getting there

Public transport

Nakanojo Town links the JR Agatsuma Line and Kan-etsu buses toward Shima/Sawatari. Reach Nakanojo Station, then coordinate the Sawatari timetable with a pickup; the hot-spring bus does not reach every climbing sector.

Driving

Choose east or west sectors before navigating, then check the current topo and barriers. Earlier reports mention a west-entrance closure; they do not establish today’s status. Confirm with a local climbing source before choosing the road.

Parking

The publisher warns against parking in front of the east-side barrier. Use designated spaces and keep forestry access clear; a full parking area does not justify passing a gate.

Rules before you go

Approach, condensation and rockfall differ by sector; a fixed-rope passage is not a resting platform. Stay out from beneath suspect blocks and do not conduct improvised cleaning.

A 2024 report describes a suspect large block on no siesta;2025 visitors report wet sectors and leeches. These are dated observations, not a current inspection. Check local maintenance/access information and leave unfinished or unpublished projects alone.

For a serious injury requiring medical help, call 119. The FDMA guide asks callers to give the location and landmarks. Save the local crag name, target sector and road access offline; ask your insurer whether the climbing style, search and rescue, treatment and repatriation are covered.

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Obtain the current topo for descent and protection. Names shared by different sectors/grades remain separate. A listed route is not a current-access recommendation.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

Check protection style and the start even on lower grades; a low number does not make a first outdoor lead appropriate.
