Steep climbing is Horai's draw: pockets and features in the tuff lead into the sustained terrain of Oni-iwa and Haikara-iwa. A first visit does not have to start on the hardest walls, though. Ganko-iwa also has lower-grade options.
This guide helps you decide whether Horai suits your level, which sector to start with, and how to fit transport, the approach and the return journey into a climbing day.
What kind of crag
鳳来（ほうらい, Horai or Hōrai） is a collection of crags around Chi-iwa Gorge and Lake Horai in Shinshiro, Aichi. CLIMBING-net describes it as one of Japan's large climbing areas: tuff, mainly bolted sport climbing and bouldering. Decide whether your destination uses the gorge-side or lake-side approach before entering “Horai” into a navigation app.
ROCKTOPO lists 242 face-climbing routes, plus 97 boulder problems and a few cracks. These are database records across multiple cliffs, not a list certifying that every recorded route is open.
Start with three names. ガンコ岩（Ganko-iwa） has routes from the lower bands through advanced sport grades. 鬼岩（Oni-iwa）and its surrounding walls include Early Morning Light Wall. ハイカラ岩（Haikara-iwa） concentrates hard routes. They remain sectors within this guide; select your target by both grade and approach.
The existence of 5.10 routes does not make every Horai sector a good destination for a 5.10 team. For a first visit, compare Ganko-iwa's routes before combining a longer approach with ambitious Oni-iwa objectives. Check the topo for each route's rope, quickdraw and descent requirements; the tables below do not replace that planning.
When to go
Start with spring or autumn. ROCKTOPO's season chart marks April–June and September–November. CLIMBING-net says year-round, with limited sector choices in midsummer and midwinter. “Year-round” does not mean that every wall has good conditions in every season.
In winter, consider wall choice together with the approach. In summer, an overhang that shelters a climb does not solve the heat or the effort of getting there. Check the weather and your JR Central connections before committing. The city's shuttle notice also sets out suspension rules for heavy-rain and flood warnings.
Getting there
Public transport
For the Chi-iwa Gorge side, take JR Central's Iida Line to 三河川合駅（Mikawa-Kawai）. The Okumikawa Tourism Council gives approximately 30 minutes on foot from the station to the gorge trailhead. That reaches the trailhead, not Ganko-iwa or Oni-iwa. Each cliff has its own approach; carry the guidebook and offline maps rather than using the sightseeing-loop duration as a climbing approach estimate.
Checked in October 2026, Shinshiro's seasonal shuttle runs between Yuya Onsen's main parking lot and Mikawa-Kawai station square on specified dates. It does not reach the cliff or the trailhead. The 2026 timetable has its last return departure from the station square at 15:30. Subtract the walk back before planning how late to climb; on other dates, or for a later return, consult JR Central's station timetables.
Driving
For the gorge side, follow the city's traffic notice: navigate to 湯谷温泉駐車場（Yuya Onsen parking）, then take the Iida Line to Mikawa-Kawai. The shuttle is another option on its operating dates. A roughly 1.2 km section of the Chi-iwa municipal road near the trailhead is closed to ordinary motor vehicles; pedestrians and bicycles may pass.
Paradise Rock, Chisansui and other lake-side sectors use different approaches. Do not improvise a shortcut through forestry roads, campsites or the education forest to save walking. Confirm the currently permitted parking and approach for your chosen sector with local climbers first.
Parking
As checked in October 2026, Shinshiro's instructions still say there is no parking around Chi-iwa Gorge: park at Yuya Onsen and transfer. Both the municipal notice and tourism council page give this direction. At Yuya Onsen, follow the city's parking diagram; keep hatched access lanes and the boiler-facility frontage clear.
Older topos and trip reports often direct climbers to Kotakibashi parking. That is not current permission to park there. JFA published a closure notice; follow the current municipal parking instructions. Ask Shinshiro's tourism department before relying on another arrangement; roadside space is not a substitute.
Rules before you go
Horai contains climbing sectors and specifically restricted areas. JFA's national access list lists “鳳来・乳岩” as closed to climbing. Koya-ura, Kage no Ōmono and other areas inside Okazaki's education forest are not freely accessible climbing areas either. These restrictions do not mean all of Horai is closed, but climbers on another wall do not give you permission to enter restricted land.
CLIMBING-net also notes that approaches to Gunkan-iwa and Wave Rock involve the education forest. For a first visit, go with someone familiar with current access arrangements. This guide does not describe routes through restricted land. Check JFA's notices before leaving and follow signs and managers' directions on site.
The tuff is soft. Local rules reproduced by CLIMBING-net require nylon brushes for bouldering and removal of chalk marks before leaving. Fires, nuisance parking and litter are prohibited. Use the entrance facilities before climbing and carry a portable toilet; take waste out with you and leave no food or equipment behind.
Some parts of the gorge have no mobile reception. Save the local-script location, target cliff name and coordinates offline. For serious injuries or another medical emergency, call 119 and follow the Fire and Disaster Management Agency's guidance: explain that it is a medical emergency, give the location and describe the casualty's condition. Ask your insurer about sport climbing, bouldering, mountain search and rescue, treatment and repatriation cover.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Route-video labels follow uploader titles and descriptions. The clip’s grade or version may differ; use the table sources and current signs when choosing a line.
The public ROCKTOPO list supplies the original YDS grades below, with every graded rope route grouped by level. Unspecified lengths stay unspecified. A database entry does not establish access permission; use the restrictions above and the local topo. R, X and aid annotations are retained where provided.
ROCKTOPO highlights Kantan and Sotsugyo among popular routes; a Toyokawa club report describes using Kantan as a warm-up. “Beginner” below is a grade band, not an outdoor-lead recommendation.
