Most learning platforms are solving the wrong problem.
They pour massive resources into making course content better, richer, and more engaging — only to find that user completion rates still hover below 10%. The problem isn’t the content. It never was. The problem is: why does someone who genuinely wants to learn something end up not learning it?
That’s the question DaoDao is trying to answer. But it’s not a content provider. It’s a learning connector — helping you transform vague ideas into executable action plans, making learning visible and progress tangible.
The Real Problem Isn’t “What to Learn” but “Why Haven’t You Started”
Before designing DaoDao, we spent a lot of time observing the behavior of self-directed learners. Several patterns kept emerging:
The first type is the perfectionist. They buy courses, bookmark resources, plan learning paths — and then do nothing. It’s not laziness; it’s fear of taking the wrong first step. Learning has become a “everything must be ready before I start” project rather than a state you can enter at any time.
The second type is the lonely self-directed learner. They are actually learning, but nobody knows, and nobody cares. The lack of external support and community feedback makes it easy for them to quietly give up in the third week.
The third type is the over-ambitious goal setter. A goal like “learn all of machine learning this year” is almost guaranteed to fail — not because they’re not serious, but because the distance feels so vast that progress is imperceptible.
These three pain points share a common core: they are execution problems, not motivation problems. They all want to learn; they’re just trapped in different forms of execution paralysis.
Every design decision in DaoDao starts from this diagnosis.
DaoDao’s Core Flow: From Idea to Action
DaoDao helps you move through four stages:
Want to do something -> You have a learning goal, but it’s still vague Assess (needs analysis) -> Clarify the purpose and motivation behind learning this Inventory (current state/resources) -> Take stock of existing knowledge and resources Plan (action plan) -> Break it down into executable small steps Achieve (tracking/check-ins) -> Learn publicly, reflect regularly, accumulate outcomes
Each step has corresponding features and feedback mechanisms. The core principle is to make “starting” easy and “continuing” effortless.
Design Philosophy One: Work With Inertia, Not Against It
DaoDao doesn’t believe learning requires “special time.” Instead, it’s designed to embed into your existing daily rhythm — commuting, waiting, before bed, between work tasks.
This is reflected in two decisions:
Zero-decision design: Each day, only one thing is suggested — the system-recommended “Today’s Practice.” Instead of giving you a list to choose from, it analyzes your skill goals and community activity to tell you directly what you should do right now. Perfectionists struggle because of too many choices, so we simply eliminate the choices.
Cumulative incentives, not streak-based incentives: Most habit apps emphasize “unbroken streaks” — you see “47-day streak” badges, and when the streak breaks, everything resets to zero, creating intense frustration. DaoDao doesn’t do this. It only shows cumulative results (“You’ve completed 238 practices”), never consecutive days. Why? Because life disrupts plans, and perfect streaks simply don’t exist. Anti-perfectionism design believes that process matters more than perfection.
Core Feature Modules
Practice (Topic Practice)
“Practice” is DaoDao’s core unit — a learning topic that users publicly commit to and execute.
Each Practice includes:
- Practice logs (check-ins, reflection journals)
- Progress tracking (completion count, recent activity)
- Skill tags (tagged using the ESCO European Skills Classification System)
- Community interaction (quick responses after check-ins)
This isn’t a “course” or “plan” — it’s a public action portfolio. Every practice you complete is recorded, seen, and peer-witnessed.
Inspire Feed
A community feed displaying others’ learning footprints, presented at a fixed rhythm. Unlike algorithm-driven feeds, the Inspire Feed uses a humanistic rhythm — you see your connections’ recent check-ins, reflections, and challenge participation, rather than algorithmically pushed content.
The purpose is to spark thoughts like: “Oh, they’re doing that? I’m interested too” or “She’s been at it for so long — maybe I should give it a try.”
Quick Reactions
When someone checks in, the community can respond with four reactions: Encouragement, Inspiration, Resonance, and Curiosity.
These reactions aren’t just emoji. Each reaction automatically triggers a corresponding comment prompt — for example, “Curiosity” prompts “I’d love to know more details — could you share XX?” This gives interactions direction rather than devolving into hollow “keep it up” messages.
Challenge (Community Challenge)
Official group learning activities that leverage time constraints and social proof to create FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). A “7-Day Japanese Beginner Challenge” has a participant list and progress board, using visible collective progress to reinforce individual motivation.
Island (Personal Island)
Your public growth map, displaying:
- Currently active Practices
- Recent activity (check-in count over the past 30 days)
- Skill tags and areas of expertise
- Completed Practice history
There’s a deliberate design choice here — the core metrics displayed are not “connection count” or “follower count” but action data. If you’re optimizing for network size, you’ll spend energy socializing instead of learning. What DaoDao wants to show is “what you’ve done,” not “who you know.”
Connect vs Follow
Connect is a two-way learning partner relationship. When sending a request, you must explain “I want to discuss XX with you” — this ensures every connection carries a specific learning context. Only people who genuinely want to co-learn will fill in this field; recipients also feel respected rather than spammed.
Follow is one-way. You can subscribe to a person or a specific Practice topic to see their updates without committing to interaction.
Additionally, DaoDao allows users to hide their connection count, reducing the noise of social anxiety.
Practice Portfolio Export
After completing a Practice topic, you can export a PDF or Markdown portfolio that includes:
- Reflection journals from the learning process
- Peer witness data (how many people gave Encouragement, Inspiration, and other reactions)
- Skill growth trajectory
This isn’t just a polished shareable artifact — it’s proof of capability outside traditional credentials. In an era where diploma value keeps declining, “I publicly studied Japanese for 3 months and completed 200 practice sessions, with community-verified progress” becomes a more persuasive signal than a certificate.
AI Personalized Recommendations
The system uses the ESCO Skills Classification System (a standardized skills framework developed by the EU) to analyze your existing skills and learning path, recommending related Practice topics — not just recommending “what,” but also explaining “why this is right for you.”
Combined with “zero-decision design,” every recommendation is filtered and personalized, easing decision paralysis.
Design Decision One: Onboarding Has Only One Goal — Getting You to Take the First Step
Most products’ onboarding teaches you “how to use the product.” DaoDao’s onboarding has a different goal — its sole purpose is to have you complete your first Practice on Day 1.
The 5-step flow works like this:
- Define your goal: “What do you most want to learn right now?”
- Assess your motivation: “Why is this important to you?”
- Inventory your resources: “What foundation or resources do you already have?”
- Create a plan: The system proposes an action plan based on your answers
- First Practice: Complete your first check-in right within the flow
The entire process takes one minute, no external page redirects, all within a single flow.
Why does this matter? The perfectionist’s biggest problem is too many entry points and too-heavy decisions. Giving choices leads to comparison, which leads to hesitation, which leads to procrastination. The onboarding logic is: narrow the choices, provide a default path, and reduce the cost of “starting” to nearly zero.
The first Practice doesn’t need to be perfect. It doesn’t need to be long. It just needs to exist. Existence is the breakthrough.
Design Decision Two: Social Features Are a Means, Not an End
DaoDao has social features, but social interaction isn’t connection for connection’s sake — it’s to strengthen co-learning and peer interaction.
When sending a connection request, there’s a field for you to fill in: “I want to discuss XX with you.” This small detail is intentional. It ensures every request carries a specific learning context, rather than a meaningless “I want to add you.”
The effect works both ways:
- For the sender: Only people who genuinely want to co-learn will bother filling in this field, automatically filtering out social noise
- For the recipient: Instead of facing “yet another stranger,” it’s “someone is interested in what I’m doing”
Additionally, connection counts can be hidden. This is rare on social platforms, which typically want numbers to drive more social behavior. But for a learning platform, anxiety over connection counts is noise. Making people worry “I have too few connections” diverts attention from learning.
The Costs of These Design Tradeoffs
No design decision is free. It’s important to be clear about the costs.
The cost of “showing actions instead of networks”: This makes it very difficult for DaoDao to grow through viral spreading in its early stages. LinkedIn drives growth with “your friends are all here”; DaoDao’s growth logic is more like a fitness app — you use it because you need it, not because your network is here.
The cost of “zero-decision recommendations”: When the system makes too many decisions, individual autonomy decreases. Users might feel guided rather than making their own choices. This requires AI recommendations to be sufficiently accurate; if recommendations frequently miss the mark, trust erodes instead.
The cost of “low-friction onboarding”: A quick start can easily become a quick quit. People who come in haven’t committed to anything yet and may treat DaoDao as “yet another app I downloaded but never use.” Taking the first step is achieved, but retention is the real challenge.
The cost of “de-emphasizing social metrics”: While reducing social anxiety, you also reduce social motivation. For co-learning to be effective, users need to genuinely build connections and genuinely care about each other. If the social threshold is too low, connections may become superficial.
These tradeoffs have no standard answers — only “what mechanisms do you believe will lead to sustained learning.” DaoDao’s bet is: lower the barrier to starting, amplify the visibility of action, work with inertia rather than against it, give co-learning relationships concrete context, and accumulate results rather than demanding perfect streaks — this combination can help more people who “want to learn” actually start learning and keep going.
Whether the bet is right, the data will tell.
The hardest part of a learning platform isn’t making the courses good — it’s getting people to keep doing something beneficial for themselves when nobody is forcing them. This is the essential question of behavioral design, and the core problem DaoDao is trying to solve.
