Algolia is a hosted search service. An application turns articles, products, or documents into JSON records, sends them to a remote index, then queries that index from a browser or backend. It is not a query layer over your existing database. It joins indexing, relevance configuration, querying, and interactive UI into one product.

That model fits site search well. A team can deliver search-as-you-type, highlighting, category refinements, and analytics without operating a search cluster. The tradeoff is a second copy of searchable data, platform-specific relevance semantics, and recurring costs tied to records and traffic.

You search an index, not the source database

An Algolia record is a set of key-value attributes; an index is a collection of records optimized for search. Algolia recommends including only data needed for searching, display, filtering, sorting, or relevance. A long article need not be one record: splitting it by heading lets a result link to the matching anchor instead of treating the entire body as one vague hit.

Indexing belongs on the server: never expose a write key in the browser. If the source has a dependable build pipeline, update the index after publishing. When webpages are the only usable source, Algolia Crawler can follow links from seed URLs, extract HTML or PDF content, and update an index on a schedule. It removes extraction and scheduling code, but you still define record boundaries, exclusions, and deletion behavior.

Ranking is not a weighted score

Algolia's default ranking is a tie-breaking sequence. Typo orders all results first; only ties proceed through Geo, Words, Filters, Proximity, Attribute, Exact, and finally Custom. This is easier to explain than one blended floating-point score, but later business signals cannot override earlier textual criteria.

Start with searchableAttributes, not mysterious weights. Their order affects the Attribute criterion: title should precede heading and body, while display-only URLs should not be searchable. Then use customRanking to break remaining ties by views, quality, or date. Excessively precise values in the first custom attribute may prevent later attributes from ever breaking a tie.

Typo tolerance is on by default. Longer alphabetic words can accept one or two typos while exact matches rank first; identifiers such as SKUs and postal codes usually need stricter settings. Algolia explicitly states that its spelling-distance mechanism doesn't apply to logographic languages such as Chinese and Japanese. A Chinese site should test tokenization, synonyms, and mixed-language queries instead of assuming the English demo's typo behavior carries over.

Facets turn search into exploration

Faceting returns available categories and counts within the current result set—category, tag, or year, for example—so users can refine several dimensions. A hidden filter can also restrict results without presenting a choice, such as enforcing per-user visibility.

Facet attributes must be declared in attributesForFaceting. Avoid turning every high-cardinality value into a facet. Authors, categories, and tags are useful; a unique URL usually is not. For private content, a public search-only key is not an authorization model. Generate secured API keys with fixed filters on the backend, and make sensitive authorization attributes unretrievable.

InstantSearch handles browser interaction

InstantSearch.js is an open-source UI library with widgets for search boxes, hits, pagination, and refinement lists. Prebuilt widgets provide the fastest path; connectors let you replace rendering; a custom widget is appropriate only when the required behavior does not exist.

This can run on a static site because it uses a restricted search key. InstantSearch sends an initial empty-query request by default; use conditional requests if the page should not list content immediately. Render highlighting and snippets through the library's helpers instead of inserting returned markup as arbitrary, unprocessed HTML.

Choosing between Algolia, Typesense, and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch

Algolia fits public content, ecommerce catalogs, documentation, and SaaS feature search—especially when delivery speed matters more than engine-level control. It is a poor fit when data cannot leave your environment, you need highly custom analyzers or complex aggregations, hosted cost stops making sense at your scale, or your team already operates search clusters reliably.

To evaluate it tonight, collect 50 real or anticipated queries and write down the expected top three results for each. Load a small index and test zero-result queries, Chinese text, misspelled English, facets, and permissions. When relevance is weak, fix record granularity and searchable attributes before changing ranking order.

Overall

Algolia is not a zero-configuration search button; it is a pre-connected product pipeline. Crawler, APIs, ranking settings, facets, and InstantSearch remove cluster operations and shorten delivery time. Your team still owns synchronization, query evaluation, authorization, and cost monitoring. When that responsibility boundary matches the project, Algolia is a pragmatic site-search choice.
