DigitalOcean presents familiar cloud building blocks with a smaller surface: Droplet VMs, App Platform, DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS), Managed Databases, Spaces object storage, Volumes, load balancers, VPCs, and DNS.
Choose the responsibility layer
A Droplet is a VM. You own OS patches, SSH, firewalls, runtime, supervisors, deployment, monitoring, and backups. It fits small services, packaged software, workers, and workloads requiring Linux control.
App Platform builds and deploys web services, workers, and jobs from Git or container images while managing infrastructure and scaling. DOKS retains the Kubernetes API for multi-service platforms and controllers. One HTTP API does not justify Kubernetes merely because it might grow.
Draw networks and state explicitly
A VPC is a private network subject to datacenter, region, and product support. It does not connect everything automatically. App Platform VPC has egress-IP, datacenter, and component constraints. Verify public ingress, private databases, egress, trusted sources, DNS, and load balancers separately.
Droplet disks, Volumes, Spaces, database backups, and snapshots have different durability. A snapshot is not an application-consistent backup. Test database restoration, configure object lifecycle and versioning, and rehearse cross-region recovery.
Managed is not complete governance
Managed Databases own parts of patching, backups, and availability. Applications still own migrations, queries and indexes, connection pools, tenant authorization, and recovery objectives. Marketplace images start quickly but require review of maintainers, updates, default credentials, and exposed ports.
DigitalOcean fits small teams, SaaS, development environments, and standard web stacks. Hyperscalers offer broader managed services, account governance, global private backbones, and complex compliance. Render or Railway may be simpler for source-to-URL only. Rebuild a Droplet, restore a database, break a VPC path, and deploy a bad release to verify IaC, backups, alarms, and rollback.
