Railway is an application-project-centered PaaS. A Project holds API, worker, and database Services, while Environments isolate production, staging, and pull requests. It removes image builds, container placement, discovery, domains, TLS, and configuration wiring—not every operational responsibility.

A Project is deployment topology, not a folder

A Service is a deployment target sourced from GitHub, a local directory, or a Docker image. A Project groups multiple Services and Environments. One repository can therefore run separate web, API, worker, and migration processes, each with its own commands, variables, resources, and deployment history.

An Environment is an isolated set of service instances, not just a variable group. Persistent environments suit staging; PR environments exist for a pull request and then disappear. Duplicating configuration does not clone production data, so previews still need isolated credentials, sanitized data, and cleanup.

Private networking wires services, not resilience

Services in one project environment communicate through <service>.railway.internal. Private networking uses internal DNS and encrypted tunnels, while Reference Variables avoid copied connection strings.

The network is runtime-only, so builds cannot reach an internal database. Applications must not assume dependencies are ready first either: there is no Compose-style readiness ordering. Use retries, timeouts, and idempotent migrations.

Volumes and health checks alter deployment promises

The service filesystem is ephemeral unless a Volume is mounted. A single writable volume constrains replicas, placement, and rolling deployment; Railway documents possible downtime when redeploying a volume-backed service. Back up important state separately and prefer purpose-built database or object storage services when horizontal scaling matters.

A health check gates traffic until a new deployment returns 200, but Railway does not continuously probe it afterward. It is release readiness, not production monitoring. Add uptime checks, metrics, logs, and alerts; restart policies cannot repair permanent configuration errors.

Railway fits small teams deploying multi-service products without operating Kubernetes first. Compare Vercel or Netlify for frontend-centric work, Fly.io for explicit global placement, and hyperscalers for strict network, IAM, or compliance controls. Test bad-release rollback, PR cleanup, dependency outages, volume restore, and cross-environment configuration mistakes.
