Growth & Experimentation interviews don't test how many growth ideas you can generate — they test whether you'll pause on a solution that "obviously should work" and ask, "Have we actually diagnosed where the bottleneck is?" These questions show up heavily in Growth PM and PLG product interviews, where interviewers want to see you treat experimentation as a systematic diagnostic process, not a game of picking the most intuitive-sounding feature and shipping it.

Most candidates' blind spot is answering a growth question with "I'd run an A/B test" — without being able to say which hypothesis the test is actually validating, or what data or user insight the hypothesis came from. Today's practice is about evolving from "I have a good idea" to "I find the bottleneck first, and let the bottleneck tell me what to test."

Growth Loops: turning a funnel into a compounding cycle

AARRR (Acquisition-Activation-Retention-Referral-Revenue) is the funnel framework Dave McClure introduced in 2007, and it helped a whole generation think about growth in measurable stages. But in a landmark 2018 piece, Reforge founder Brian Balfour, along with Casey Winters, Kevin Kwok, and Andrew Chen, argued that funnels are linear — you get out the bottom only what you put in at the top, which means you have to keep pouring in more ad budget, more channels, more headcount just to sustain growth. A Growth Loop's key difference is feeding output back into input, forming a closed system that self-accelerates:

A "Funnel PM" cares about acquisition channels (ads, SEO) — growth stops the moment the budget stops. A "Loop PM" cares about how one cohort of users creates the next, and the compounding effect accelerates as the user base grows. Casey Winters used this exact logic to take Pinterest from 40 million to over 200 million users, powered by a content loop: user-created public boards became other people's entry point into the product.

The diagnostic chain: Goal → Metric → Bottleneck → Hypothesis → Experiment → Measurement

Finding the loop is only step one. What Growth PM interviews really filter for is whether you'll run the full diagnostic chain before proposing a solution:

  1. Goal: Which business objective are we trying to move this quarter?
  2. Metric: Which single metric best represents that goal?
  3. Bottleneck: Where does the funnel actually leak? (Skip this step and you're guessing.)
  4. Hypothesis: Why do you think it leaks there — what's your hypothesis?
  5. Experiment: What's the cheapest way to validate that hypothesis?
  6. Measurement: What metric and confidence interval determine whether the experiment worked?

Edd Saunders, the experimentation lead at JobLeads, turned the "find the bottleneck" step into a concrete tool: every candidate problem gets plotted on a 2x2 matrix, with evidence strength on the horizontal axis (0 for pure assumption, 10 for fully validated by data) and impact on the vertical axis. The top-right quadrant — high impact, already validated — is what gets tested first this cycle. That's a far more reliable prioritization signal than "the boss thinks we should" or "competitors already have one."

You lead growth for an online personal-finance app. Monthly active retention among new users has been flat for two quarters. Your CEO believes the problem is not enough acquisition, wants to double the marketing budget, and wants to prioritize a referral program with cash rewards, "because every competitor already has one." How do you respond?

How to Break It Down

  1. Clarify the problem: Ask the CEO to define "retention has been flat" precisely — are new users simply not coming in, or are they coming in but not sticking? That determines whether the leak is in acquisition or further downstream.
  2. Define the metric: Break "flat retention" into the funnel — is the issue a low signup-completion rate, or users completing signup but not opening the app a second time within 7 days?
  3. Find the bottleneck before the solution: A referral program solves an acquisition problem. If the real leak is "users don't build a habit of logging expenses after signup" (activation), doubling down on referrals just brings in more users who won't stick either — inflating the denominator and making the metric look worse.
  4. Design a validating experiment: Using JobLeads' problem-mapping logic, break "users don't keep logging expenses" into a few testable hypotheses (e.g., "manual entry is too much friction," "users don't see the payoff of tracking"), and pick the cheapest, highest-impact one to test first.
  5. Define success: Not "how many new users the referral program brought in," but whether the share of users completing a second logging session within 7 days actually goes up — that's the metric that answers what the CEO actually wanted solved.

Sample Answer (say it like this in the interview)

Frame the problem first: Before doubling down on the referral program, I'd want to see where in the funnel retention is actually going flat. If it's "users who complete signup but don't open the app a second time within 7 days," the problem isn't acquisition — it's activation. Doubling the referral budget at that point just spends more money bringing in users who won't stick either, which inflates the denominator and makes retention look even worse.

Break it down with a framework: I'd break "users don't build a logging habit after signup" into a few concrete hypotheses — is manual entry too time-consuming, or do users just not see the tangible payoff of tracking their spending? I'd score each hypothesis by evidence strength: if session recordings show a lot of users abandoning mid-entry on the input screen, that hypothesis has strong evidence and deserves a fast, cheap test first — something like receipt-photo logging or automatic bank-account sync.

State the trade-off clearly: That means I'd pause the referral budget increase and put resources into activation experiments instead. The cost is that new-user numbers won't look as good in the short term as the CEO expects — but I'm betting that fixing the activation leak first means that whether growth comes organically or from a referral program later, those users will actually stick. Success is measured by the share of users completing a second logging session within 7 days going up, not by referral signups.

Edd Saunders, now JobLeads' experimentation lead, once ran a personalization experiment for a large pizza delivery company during his consulting days. Customer journey mapping showed the average user needed about 22 distinct steps from starting a session to completing an order, over half of traffic came from returning customers, and those returning customers ordered the same pizza week after week. The logical conclusion wrote itself: save the usual order, let a returning user add it to their cart and go straight to checkout in one click — 22 steps became 5 or 6. After launch, the result was "absolutely zero impact, zero impact on user behavior" — no increase or decrease in purchases. Digging deeper, the team realized that for these customers, re-browsing the menu was itself part of the experience — removing the choice removed their sense of control.

That failure is what led Edd to build the problem-mapping framework described above, training teams to validate the problem before jumping to a solution.
