Choosing Laos Climbing Crags: Thakhek Limestone, Vang Vieng Karst and Luang Prabang River Walls | Laos Climbing Crags

Laos has more than 600 limestone sport routes, concentrated in Thakhek and Vang Vieng. Thakhek offers a camp and a full topo from October to May; Vang Vieng is spread out and needs a motorbike; Luang Prabang has only 19 routes but the best river setting. Pick a base first, then sort out visas, transport and medical risk.

Thakhek and Green Climbers Home: Transport, Visas, Lodging and Accident Records | Laos Climbing Crags

Thakhek is the centre of Lao climbing: the Pha Tam Kam crags surround Green Climbers Home, a 5–20 minute walk away. The smoothest route from Taipei is via Bangkok Don Mueang and Nakhon Phanom, then across the Third Friendship Bridge. The camp caps the 2026/27 season at 70 guests. There is no ambulance, and one climber died cleaning an anchor in 2025 and another in 2026.

Pha Tam Kam Valley Walls: Hangover, Partymeile, Open All Hours and Burnout | Laos Climbing Crags

The walls on the far side of the Pha Tam Kam valley are 5–25 minutes from camp and offer longer, steeper routes: Open All Hours is shaded all day, Hangover and Partymeile are vertical faces with overhanging finishes, Burnout is stiff, and Worldtrip has 30 m tufas. There is also a four-pitch, 130 m multipitch called Chinese New Year.

Tha Falang: Thakhek's Quiet Long-Route Crag | Laos Climbing Crags

Tha Falang is less than 2 km downstream from Green Climbers Home, a 20–30 minute walk, with 33 routes spread across Disneyland, Zombieland, Wonderland, Phantasialand and other sectors. The routes are longer and quieter than Pha Tam Kam's, and some sectors are overgrown; Caterpillar 7a and March Hare 7a+ are the only named routes publicly verifiable.

Pha Tang: White Limestone Long Routes North of Vang Vieng | Laos Climbing Crags

Pha Tang sits by the village of the same name north of Vang Vieng, with 48 routes from 5b to 8b on pale limestone streaked with black, and big tufas high on the wall. The approach crosses a stream and rice paddies. The whole crag has just 23 logged ascents, making it one of the least-visited crags in Laos, though a 2023 visit rated it the best in Vang Vieng.
