Becoming a Mountain Guide in Austria, Germany and Italy: VÖBS, VDBS and the Regional Collegi, Fees and Rules for Foreigners | IFMGA Mountain Guides
Austria's new 2026 curriculum is 89.5 days over 3 years, costs about €15,000 and is taught in German. Germany's state exam is run by TU München; training takes about 2.5–3 years and VDBS puts course fees at about €17,200. In Italy the regional Collegi run training, aspirants must work at least 2 years before qualifying, and most regions accept only Italian or EU citizens. In all three, licensing rules follow the state or region, so choose where you will work before you apply.
