Oct 12, 20261 min
TL;DRA chert crag in Shimukappu village, central Hokkaido. ROCKTOPO lists 113 lines in total (101 face routes, 11 boulder problems), with an unusually deep 5.12–5.13 range, and the walls sit right beside Prefectural Road 136. Season is May–October; winter snow reaches about 1 m. The nearest station is Shimukappu on the JR Sekisho Line, but no official bus serves the crag, so in practice you drive.

🌏 中文版

Akaiwa Seigankyo (赤岩青巌峡, あかいわせいがんきょう) is a cluster of red chert boulders and walls in the Mukawa River gorge, in Shimukappu village (占冠村), Yufutsu District, Hokkaido. CLIMBING-net calls it "北海道を代表するエリア" and adds "特に5.12台、5.13台がこれほど充実したエリアは他に類を見ない" (nowhere else is the 5.12–5.13 range this deep). Most walls are a few steps from the road.

What kind of crag is it?

The Shimukappu tourism association describes the red rock as chert formed from microorganisms deposited on an ancient sea floor, and calls the gorge "ロッククライミングの聖地".

History: according to CLIMBING-net, development began in 1987 when local climber 金沢弘明 invited members of the club 奴隷倶楽部. Three benchmark routes went up that year: 僕を見て (5.10), 爆発するぜ! (5.11c) and 天国列車 (5.12a/b). Later came 神威 (5.13d), 日高源流エサオマン (5.13b) and 燃えるお兄さん, the first route in Japan given a 5.14 grade. In 2006 松島暁人 made the first ascent of ムーカム (5.14c/d). CLIMBING-net also notes that solid bolts were used from the start, so protection is rarely a worry.

Route count and grade spread (checked 2026-10-12)

The two sites give different numbers:

  • ROCKTOPO: 113 in total: 101 face, 1 crack, 11 boulder problems. Face routes: 5.2+: 9, 5.10a+: 23, 5.11a+: 26, 5.12a+: 25, 5.13a+: 15, 5.14a+: 3.
  • CLIMBING-net: "約100本" (about 100). Up to 5.9: 11, 5.10s: 27, 5.11s: 27, 5.12s: 22, 5.13s: 14, 5.14s: 2.

ROCKTOPO covers only 11 boulder problems and, for one boulder, tells users to buy the local bouldering topo for details. That topo lists about 130 problems (see "Where to look things up").

ROCKTOPO divides the crag into more than a dozen rocks. The ones with the most sport routes:

RockType and countDifficulty (ROCKTOPO: E easy / M mid / H hard)

The rest are ねぎ岩, こうもり岩 and 王家の谷 (5–6 routes each), ローソク岩, ティラミス岩 and ファッションヘルス, plus the boulders at ぶったまげ岩のボルダー (8) and 川の岩1号 (3).

Who it suits: CLIMBING-net says plainly that if you are travelling from far away, you should be able to at least try 5.11s. There are few easy routes: ROCKTOPO lists only 9 in the 5.2–5.9 range. It is a thin choice for someone just starting to lead outdoors. If you climb 5.11 and want 5.12–5.13 projects, this depth is exactly what CLIMBING-net singles out.

When to go

SourceSeason
ROCKTOPOSeason field lists May–October
CLIMBING-net"5月~10月" (May–October)

Both agree on May to October. The reasons come from Shimukappu's climate:

  • Snowy, cold winters: the village's official overview says the climate is inland, snow reaches "100センチメートル前後" (around 100 cm), and summers are cool while winters are cold. The village disaster-prevention plan gives maximum snow depth as "90cm 前後", so the two official documents differ slightly.
  • Spring snowmelt: the same plan says snowmelt flooding runs "概ね3月末から5月末まで" (roughly late March to late May). Rivers run high around the start of the season.
  • Cool summers: the village describes itself as "夏涼しい", which is why Hokkaido crags appeal when Honshu is at its hottest.
  • Autumn leaves: the village gives the foliage season as late September to early October. It is the peak sightseeing period and the end of the climbing season.
  • The management hut closes at the end of October: Gutabi Hokkaido (updated 2019) says "赤岩青巌峡 管理棟設置は10月末まで". The hut is where you fill in the entry form (see Rules). I could not find anything on conditions from November on.

Getting there

By car (the practical option)

  1. Take the Doto Expressway and exit at Shimukappu IC (占冠IC). The interchange is named on NEXCO East Japan's Doto Expressway page. The tourism association's access page gives about 2 hours from Sapporo to Shimukappu by expressway.
  2. The tourism association's trail map says: from Michi-no-Eki Shizen Taiken Shimukappu, follow Prefectural Road 136 for about 5 km to the gorge. The route goes through the Akaiwa Tunnel. The tourism association's crag page gives "占冠村中央から車で10分" (10 minutes' drive from the village centre).
  3. Parking: the trail map shows the car park (P) next to the management office and toilet. Capacity: Gutabi Hokkaido lists "10台・無料" (10 cars, free; updated 2019). The tourism association pages I read give no capacity. The ROCKTOPO parking page has a location but no description.
  4. No parking: the trail map marks "駐車禁止" beside 門馬フェイス and at the "交流スペース" at the south end. CLIMBING-net also says the former car park near ぶったまげ岩 can no longer be used for parking.

Public transport

  • The nearest station is Shimukappu on the JR Sekisho Line. The tourism association gives about 1 hour 20 minutes by limited express from Sapporo.
  • No official bus to the crag: the Shimukappu village bus runs toward Furano and Minami-Furano (via Tomamu), and a Hidaka town bus also passes through the village. None of the official pages I read list a service to Akaiwa Seigankyo. The Michi-no-Eki alone is about 5 km from the crag (trail map), so without a car you need another plan. Ask the tourism association (0167-39-8010) before you go.

Rules to know before you go

Akaiwa Seigankyo is a village nature park managed by the NPO Shimukappu tourism association. The Hokkaido section of JFA's list of access-problem areas does not include it.

  • Forest-entry form (required): the tourism association says anyone climbing or using the trails must fill in the form ("必ず下記の申請書をご記入の上、ご利用ください"): a forest-entry application plus a self-responsibility waiver (入林申請書および自己責任同意書). Forms are at the management hut, and even when no one is there they are left in a box: "管理人が不在の場合でもBOXに入っておりますので必ずご記入ください". The PDF link on the page would not load when I checked, so fill one in at the hut.
  • Don't leave ropes or quickdraws up for long: CLIMBING-net says "村立自然公園なので長期間ロープやヌンチャクを残置しないこと".
  • Toilet donation: CLIMBING-net mentions a donation (協力金/カンパ) toward toilet upkeep. That text dates from around 2012–2014. None of the sources I found say whether it still applies or how much it is.
  • Bears: in April 2022 JFA reported a bear seen "天国列車前" (in front of the route 天国列車) and asked climbers to "食糧管理にもご注意下さい" (keep your food secure). JFA also notes that in Hokkaido's mountains bears can turn up anywhere. Don't leave food unattended at the base of the wall.
  • Routes close during rebolting: the tourism association posts rebolting notices in its news section. The 2026 notice covered ちび太, the middle of 日高源流エサオマン, バウ and others on 29 August, and said "作業当日と作業終了後2日程度は、対象のルートを登ることは出来ません" (the routes cannot be climbed on the day and for about two days afterwards). JFA also published a 2025 rebolting report (five routes on ぶったまげ岩, including 開発するぜ! and 神威).
  • Occasional parking restrictions: the tourism association has announced Hokkaido Police mountain-rescue training at the crag, during which "駐車場の規制を行います" (the car park is restricted). Notices like this are irregular, so check the tourism association news before you go.

Notable routes

ROCKTOPO's "人気の課題" (popular routes) on the crag page, checked 2026-10-12:

  • ジェロニモ (5.11a): on しゅうちょう岩. ROCKTOPO calls it "赤岩青巌峡の三つ星ルート" (the crag's three-star route).
  • 天国列車 (5.12b): one of the 1987 first-generation routes. The grade differs between sources: ROCKTOPO says 5.12b, CLIMBING-net says 5.12a/b.

Other routes in CLIMBING-net's history include 僕を見て (on 橋の岩 in ROCKTOPO, graded 5.10c there and 5.10 on CLIMBING-net), 爆発するぜ! (5.11c), 神威 (5.13d) and ムーカム (5.14c/d). ROCKTOPO describes 橋の岩 as the rock "just downstream from the car park".

Where to look things up

  • ROCKTOPO: 赤岩青巌峡: route lists for each rock, grade spread, popular routes and user logs. Offline download needs a login.
  • ROCKTOPO parking page: car-park coordinates and directions.
  • CLIMBING-net: 赤岩青巌峡: Yama-kei's crag entry, with the history, grade spread and campsites (ニニウキャンプ場 and 沙流川キャンプ場). Its guidebook field lists the Hokkaido–Tohoku volume. Campsite opening periods are announced each year; I did not check them.
  • Shimukappu tourism association: the entry form and the trail map, which shows each rock, the car park and the no-parking spots. Its news section carries rebolting and parking notices.
  • Bouldering topo, 北海道赤岩青巌峡ボルダーエリアマップ: according to a retailer listing, it was compiled by local climber 持田拓馬, covers about 130 problems and is backed by the tourism association and the Hokkaido Free Climbing Association. 10% of sales go to cleaning up the crag. The second edition went on sale in May 2023, and the listing says this print run is the last.
  • JFA Hokkaido area: notices on bear sightings and rebolting.
  • theCrag: I did not find a theCrag page for Akaiwa Seigankyo.
