Hyugami (日向神, ひゅうがみ; reading per ROCKTOPO) is in the Hyugami gorge (日向神峡) in Yabe, Yame City, at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture, around Hyugami Dam. CLIMBING-net puts it this way: "安山岩の大きな一枚岩が谷をはさんで連立している姿は圧巻である" (huge single slabs of andesite line both sides of the valley — an overwhelming sight). Those walls once carried many long, mostly aid routes; today the main game is single-pitch bolted sport climbing along their bases.
Two things to know up front. Public transport is thin — only 5 buses a day head toward the crag. And after the July 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, a local climber reported rockfall reaching the road in several sectors.
What kind of crag is it
| Item | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Hyugami, Kita-Yabe, Yabe, Yame City, Fukuoka (Hyugami gorge) | Crossroad Fukuoka |
| Rock | Andesite | CLIMBING-net, theCrag |
| Angle | 90° | CLIMBING-net |
| Walls | Monoliths 100–200 m high; most single-pitch routes are under 25 m | Hyugami Climbing (reprint of Iwa to Yuki), Hyugami Climbing Beta |
| Style | Mainly bolted sport, plus some multi-pitch | CLIMBING-net |
| Toilets | Public toilet: "有" (yes) | CLIMBING-net |
CLIMBING-net still gives the address as "福岡県八女郡矢部村、黒木町", the old municipal names; Fukuoka's official tourism site, Crossroad Fukuoka, now lists it under Yabe, Yame City. CLIMBING-net also notes that it is "福岡市よりむしろ熊本からのほうが近い" (closer to Kumamoto than to Fukuoka City). theCrag puts the drive at about 90 minutes from Fukuoka City and 60 minutes from Kurume.
History
According to theCrag and the 1993 Iwa to Yuki (岩と雪) article reprinted on a local site, on January 3, 1989 local climbers freed the first pitch of "日向神で最初に拓かれたという中央ルート" (said to be the first route opened at Hyugami), creating "Showa" (昭和, 5.11a) and starting the development of short free routes. CLIMBING-net makes a point of remembering Yoshiaki Noge (野下善秋), who developed many Kyushu crags and died in spring 2008: "現在クライミングを楽しめるのは彼の尽力に負うところ大なる" (that we can climb here today owes a great deal to his efforts).
Route count and grades (checked 2026-10-12)
The sites disagree widely, so here is each one:
- ROCKTOPO: 239 routes — 237 lead (face) and 2 multi-pitch. Face routes by grade: ungraded 7, 5.2+: 29, 5.10a+: 85, 5.11a+: 84, 5.12a+: 31, 5.13a+: 1.
- CLIMBING-net: "95本以上" (95 or more).
- theCrag: 163 routes; the description says "around 10 crags and over 150 routes".
- Hyugami Climbing Beta (an English blog by a local climber): "over 300 climbs, including 15 multi-pitches", though the author notes this is only what can be traced from public websites.
ROCKTOPO splits the crag into 21 sectors. The largest is 道端エリア (Michibata, 23 routes), followed by 下部「広場エリア」, ハートエリア and 愛のエリア 上部 with 17 each. Sector names and grade tables are on the ROCKTOPO page.
Who it suits: the 5.10s and 5.11s make up about 70% of ROCKTOPO's face routes, and CLIMBING-net tags it "初心者・中級者OK" (fine for beginners and intermediates). There are 31 routes in the 5.12s and very few at 5.13 or harder. Hyugami Climbing Beta warns that local grades are still being revised: "Maybe you can start from 1 or 2 grades lower than your usual climb."
When to go
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| CLIMBING-net | Season: "通年" (year-round) |
| ROCKTOPO | No season field on the crag page; the per-month logbook chart peaks in March and is zero for August–October |
| Hyugami Climbing Beta | Avoid the rainy season from late June to July; May and October are best, but locals climb all year — "Just choose the area wisely" |
| K1 HUT (Sunset area) | "一年を通して登れる。ベストシーズンは春と秋。夏は陽の当たらない午前中が、冬は陽の当たる午後がお勧め" (climbable all year; best in spring and autumn; in summer go in the shaded morning, in winter in the sunny afternoon) |
Sun exposure varies by sector, so choosing the right sector matters more than choosing the month. The Iwa to Yuki article reprinted on the local site breaks it down:
- Summer: サマータイムエリア (Summertime area) — "エリア名で分かるように夏がいい" (as the name says, it's good in summer). K1 HUT says the lower Sunset area is "昼過ぎまで日陰" (in shade until early afternoon) and "特に夏のエリアとして適している" (especially suited to summer).
- Autumn to winter: コンペエリア (Competition area) is "明るくて日当たりがいいので、秋から冬がいい" (bright and sunny, so autumn to winter); バルコニーIIエリア (Balcony II) gets late western sun, "冬でも天気がよければ暖かい" (warm even in winter on a fine day).
- Light rain: 奥壁エリア (Okuheki) has small roofs up high, so "弱い雨ぐらいだったら登れる" (you can climb in light rain).
- After rain: for 乾季の歌 in the Sunset area, ROCKTOPO's route note says "結構濡れている時が多いので、乾いた時季にどうぞ" (often wet — go in a dry spell). K1 HUT also suggests a different approach trail when the fixed rope is wet after rain.
ROCKTOPO's chart counts user-logged ascents. It shows when people tend to go, not an official recommended season.
Getting there
Public transport
- Take the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Hainuzuka Station (羽犬塚駅).
- Take the Horikawa Bus Haya Line (羽矢線: Hainuzuka–Fukushima–Kurogi–Yabe) and change at Kurogi (黒木) for a bus toward Shiba-iori (柴庵). In the Haya Line timetable revised October 1, 2024, 5 buses a day leave Kurogi toward the crag via the Damu-iriguchi (ダム入口) and Hyugami (日向神) stops — on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays/holidays alike. Some of them are trial services run by the Yame City Regional Public Transport Council.
- The Kurogi–Yabe leg uses small vans: Yame City says "堀川バス・代替バスとも8~9名定員のワゴン車両による運行" (both Horikawa and the substitute buses run 8–9-seat vans), and the substitute service continues after April 1, 2026. With a group or a lot of gear, be ready for the van to be full.
- Stop and walk: mountain tour operator Yamakara, in its Hyugami climbing course, has participants get off at "ダム入り口" and walk "徒歩約20分" (about 20 minutes) to the campground parking where the group meets.
Timetables change with each revision; download the current Haya Line timetable from the Horikawa Bus site before you go.
By car
- CLIMBING-net: "九州自動車道八女ICから車で約1時間、国道442号線で日向神ダムをめざす" (about an hour from Yame IC on the Kyushu Expressway; follow Route 442 toward Hyugami Dam). Crossroad Fukuoka also gives about 60 minutes from Yame IC.
- Yamakara's directions: on Route 442 toward Hyugami Dam, turn left when the dam comes into view after the last long tunnel, cross over the dam, and continue about 1 km on a narrowing road; after a small bridge there is parking on the right.
- From parking or the roadside to the sectors, theCrag and Hyugami Climbing Beta both give 0–15 minutes.
Parking: the sources don't line up
- The lot climbers usually use belongs to the former Oku-Hyugami campground (奥日向神キャンプ場). Mountain Project says "The camp ground is closed but the parking can still be used", and Hyugami Climbing Beta says "Parking Free of charge."
- But the campground reopened in 2022. The Heart Rock Campground website says "元の奥日向神キャンプ場をリニューアルオープンしました" (we have renovated and reopened the former Oku-Hyugami campground), and it now runs as a "完全予約制のセルフキャンプ場" (reservation-only self-service campground). Yamakara calls its meeting point "キャンプ場跡地の駐車場(ハート岩キャンプ場の駐車場)" (the parking at the former campground — Heart Rock Campground's lot) and notes "駐車場限りあり" (limited parking).
- None of the sources I read say whether day climbers may use that lot since the reopening, or whether there is a fee. Ask Heart Rock Campground directly, or ask local climbers in the comments of the "情報共有" post on the Hyugami blog.
- For the Love area (愛のエリア), theCrag suggests parking "in the large shoulder on the road side shortly before the last tunnel and after the picnic bench" — "If available."
- Crossroad Fukuoka's page for the Hyugami gorge says parking "なし" (none). That is tourist-site information, not climber-specific.
| Public transport | Car | |

| Get off / park | Damu-iriguchi stop | Former Oku-Hyugami (now Heart Rock) campground lot — confirm first |
| To the crag | About 20 min walk to the lot (Yamakara) | 0–15 min |
| Frequency | 5 buses a day toward the crag | About 1 hour |
Rules and cautions before you go
Hyugami does not appear on the JFA list of access-problem areas (checked 2026-10-12), and none of the sources I read mention registration or a contribution fee. What you do need to watch is land, rockfall and wildlife:
- Mostly private land: theCrag's access note says "Almost personal land but no problem to climb."
- Rockfall after the earthquake: the Japan Meteorological Agency records the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake (M7.1) on July 28, 2026. On 2026-08-16 a local climber's blog, 山へ行って居ります, reported rocks from near the ridge in the Sunset clearing, "落石は下の道路にまで落ちていた" (the rockfall reached the road below), plus a lot of rockfall onto the road around the Central area: "しばらくは各エリアで注意しなければならない" (we'll need to be careful in every sector for a while). The same post notes that a key hold on ウシ子 (5.11b) in the Tunnel area had broken off.
- The crag is right above the road: the local site Hyugami Climbing warns on its Rock-shed area notes: "真下の道路まで近いので、落石には十分に注意してください" (the road is just below, so take great care with rockfall). Its Sunset area page adds "道から取り付くルートでは、歩行者にご留意ください" (watch for pedestrians on routes that start from the road).
- Old bolts and open bolting: Hyugami Climbing Beta warns of "unreliable 40 year old bolts" and says "anybody can bolt here so better not to climb the one that is not popular and tested." The local Hyugami blog records that the main routes in the Love area were rebolted on June 3–5, 2022 with chemical anchors, with help from JFA rebolting volunteers; the Balcony area got the same treatment the year before. theCrag also notes "Some old bolts remain."
- Rope length: Hyugami Climbing Beta says "Mostly 50m is ok but 60m covers all." On the local site's Rock area page, several routes say "60mロープでもロワーダウンが一杯一杯" (barely enough to lower off even with a 60 m rope), and it recommends re-tying at the lower route's anchor.
- Wasps and ticks: a 2022-10-05 comment on the Hyugami blog's "情報共有" post reports hornet (スズメバチ) nests above the Sunset area and in a crack in the Tunnel area; the Rock-shed notes also mention ticks (マダニ) and small black wasps that are hard to notice.
- Protected plants: wild Dendrobium orchids (セッコク) and moss grow in many sectors. The Rock-shed notes ask climbers "極力生態系を乱さないようにお願いします" (to disturb the ecosystem as little as possible), and on the Rock area page the developer asks that one moss slab be "登らずに残しておいて" (left unclimbed).
Notable sectors and routes
Names and grades follow the original sources; check the latest ROCKTOPO or local topo for current grades.
- 愛のエリア (Love area): the Iwa to Yuki article called it "日向神でいちばん新しいエリア" (the newest area at Hyugami) at the time, with grades from 5.9 to 5.13a/b. theCrag describes it as "Expert climber's and best crag in Hyugami", mostly slab in the lower part and more face and overhanging features above.
- サンセットエリア (Sunset area): developed from 2008; K1 HUT says "グレードは5.10~5.11台が中心" (mostly 5.10–5.11). Routes on ROCKTOPO include 善秋君のおかげですIII (5.11c, 25 m, named for Yoshiaki Noge) and 日曜よりの使者 (5.12a, a final route at the 2008 Hyugami rock competition).
- サマータイムエリア (Summertime area): the Iwa to Yuki article singles out セッティングオン (5.12c), which the author says pushed them "『12』のレベルへ一気に押し上げた" (straight up to the 5.12 level).
- バーカーエリア (Barker area): a slab area for beginners according to the Iwa to Yuki article; the first pitch of スーパーヒーロー is 40 m long. Many multi-pitch routes start here, so watch for rockfall when a party is above.
- 道端エリア (Michibata area): ROCKTOPO's largest sector (23 routes); the name means "roadside."
- theCrag's Hyugami page highlights two three-star routes: Tokaebisu (5.11a) and Hyugami rayback (5.12a).
Where to look things up
- ROCKTOPO: 日向神 (in Japanese): route tables and grade spreads for all 21 sectors, with developer notes for some. Its parking page, 日向神の駐車場, is marked "仮登録の情報です" (provisional) and has no capacity or fee details.
- CLIMBING-net: 日向神 (in Japanese): Yama-Kei's crag entry, No. 91 of the "100岩場"; the guidebook field lists 中国・四国・九州. Its camping info is outdated (it still says Oku-Hyugami campground is "バンガローのみでテント不可", bungalows only, no tents).
- Hyugami Climbing (in Japanese): a local topo site linked from the K1 HUT homepage (it includes a "K1開拓ルート表" route list), with pages for each sector and multi-pitch line plus the reprinted 1993 Iwa to Yuki article. The older K1 HUT site still has some sector pages.
- Hyugami blog (in Japanese): a local blog posting as "事務局より" (from the secretariat; comments mention the Hyugami Climbers Club), with rebolting and anchor-relocation records. Comments on its "情報共有コメント" post are used to report wasp nests, broken holds and similar conditions.
- theCrag: Hyugami: English route database with 163 routes and sector approach notes.
- Hyugami Climbing Beta: English overview aimed at first-time foreign visitors; the author says the translations aren't double-checked, so confirm with the original sites.
- Mountain Project: Fukuoka prefecture: only a few routes listed; the parking note predates the campground's reopening.
- Horikawa Bus (in Japanese): Haya Line timetable PDFs.
