Kitayama Park (北山公園, Kitayama Kōen; listed on Mountain Project as Kitayama Boulders) is in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, filed under the "Rokko" (六甲) district on CLIMBING-net. The rock is granite and the climbing is bouldering only. ROCKTOPO lists 126 problems, most of them between 7-kyu and 1-kyu. CLIMBING-net (in Japanese) says the boulders have been climbed "since the early 1980s" (1980年代初頭より登られ) and, being close to Osaka and Kobe with good transit, "have been used by many climbers" (多くのクライマーに利用されてきた).
This is a city-edge park, and the boulders sit beside walking paths. The JFA records that in January 2006 the land manager asked people to stop climbing; local climbers negotiated, promised to follow use rules and etiquette, and climbing resumed the following month. Read those rules before you go.
What kind of crag is it
| Item | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Nishinomiya, Hyogo ("Rokko" district) | CLIMBING-net |
| Elevation | About 192 m | Mountain Project |
| Rock | Granite | CLIMBING-net |
| Angle | 70–90 degrees | CLIMBING-net |
| Style | Bouldering | CLIMBING-net, ROCKTOPO |
| History | Climbed since the early 1980s; most of the main problems were already done when it appeared in the bouldering feature of Iwa to Yuki No. 105 | CLIMBING-net |
| Guidebook | No. 68 in Japan 100 Crags; listed book: "Tokai/Kansai" (東海・関西) | CLIMBING-net |
On its place in history, the JFA describes it as "the bouldering area with the longest history in Japan" (ボルダリングエリアとして日本で最も長い歴史を持つ北山公園). That is the JFA's claim; no other source checked for this guide confirms or disputes it.
CLIMBING-net also records an incident: amid arguments over toprope use and the anchors that would require, a "hold-breaking incident" (ホールド破壊事件) believed to be connected took place in April 2001, and "many of the representative problems were damaged" (多くの代表的課題が、被害を受けた). Grades and problems on ROCKTOPO today may differ from older guidebooks.
Problem count and grade spread (checked 2026-10-12)
The three sites give different numbers:
- ROCKTOPO: 126 boulder problems. 10-kyu+: 4, 7-kyu+: 28, 4-kyu+: 57, 1-kyu−+: 16, 1-dan−+: 16, 2-dan−+: 4, 3-dan−+: 1.
- CLIMBING-net: "about 50" (約50本), tagged "OK for beginners and intermediates" (初心者・中級者OK).
- Mountain Project: the description says "With over 100 problems with a good range of difficulty", but zero problems are actually entered on the site.
ROCKTOPO splits Kitayama Park into 20 boulders or clusters (difficulty uses ROCKTOPO's own bands: E easy / M moderate / H hard):
| Area | Problems | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
5 each | Mostly E and M |
0 | No problems entered yet |
Who it suits: the 4-kyu band is the largest, and H-band problems appear only at アドレナリン・シャーク周辺 (3), 将棋岩と周辺 and タブチロック (1 each); CLIMBING-net tags it for beginners and intermediates. There is plenty for a first outdoor bouldering day. If you want 2-dan-and-up projects, ROCKTOPO has only five.
When to go
| Source | What it says about season |
|---|---|
| CLIMBING-net | "Year-round (conditions are poor in midsummer)" (通年(真夏は条件が悪い)) |
| ROCKTOPO | No season field on the Kitayama Park page; its monthly chart counts user-logged ascents, not a recommended season |
| Mountain Project | Nothing on season |
In short:
- Climbable all year, poor in midsummer. CLIMBING-net does not say why conditions are poor.
- Flower-season parking: CLIMBING-net says garden visitors surge in flower season ("especially the late-March holidays and Golden Week", 特に3月下旬の連休やゴールデンウィーク等), and climbers should "refrain from using the car park" (駐車場の利用は自粛すること). Come by train or bus then.
- New Year: the car park is closed 29 December to 3 January (see below).
Getting there
Train and walk
- Hankyu Koyoen Station: CLIMBING-net's access field says "15 minutes on foot from Hankyu Koyoen Station" (阪急甲陽園駅より徒歩15分).
- Nishinomiya City's access page for the botanical garden (in Japanese) gives "about 40 minutes north" (北へ約40分) from Koyoen Station to Kitayama Botanical Garden. That figure is to the garden, not to the boulders; the two numbers have different end points.
- Mountain Project says public transport takes about an hour from Osaka and 1.5 hours from Kyoto, followed by a 10–20 minute walk on generally flat terrain (without saying where the walk starts).
Bus (to Kitayama Botanical Garden)
Per Nishinomiya City, all of these stop at "Kayandōchō" (柏堂町), and "the garden is right in front" (すぐ前が植物園です):
| Operator | Start and stop | Route | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hankyu Bus | Hankyu Shukugawa stop (1) | For 西宮甲山高校前 or 甲山墓園前 | 15 min |
| Hanshin Bus | Hanshin Nishinomiya stop (1) | 鷲林寺循環線 (westbound loop) | 25 min |
| Hanshin Bus | Hanshin Nishinomiya stop (2) | 鷲林寺循環線 (eastbound loop) | 45 min |
| Sakura Yamanami Bus | Hankyu Shukugawa stop (1) | Northbound (有馬・金仙寺系統) | 15 min |
| Sakura Yamanami Bus | Stop on Route 82 near JR Sakura-Shukugawa Station | Northbound (有馬・金仙寺系統) | 20 min |
| Sakura Yamanami Bus | 西宮戎 (north of Hanshin Nishinomiya) | Northbound (有馬・金仙寺系統) | 25 min |
Frequencies and timetables are not on those pages; check each operator's site before you go. None of the sources checked give the walking time from the garden to the boulders.
Driving
- Route: Nishinomiya City says to take Prefectural Route 82 (大沢西宮線) north for about 15 minutes from the "Yamate Kansen Kotobukichō-kita" intersection or the "Route 2 Kaguramachi" intersection. None of the sources checked name the nearest expressway interchange.
- Car park: CLIMBING-net says "the paid car park at Kitayama Botanical Garden can be used" (北山緑化植物園の有料駐車場が利用可能); the ROCKTOPO parking page says the same and refers you to the garden for fees.
- Capacity: Nishinomiya City says 63 spaces (2 accessible); ROCKTOPO's parking page lists "about 5" (約 5 台). These differ widely, and ROCKTOPO doesn't explain its figure.
- Fees and hours differ between sources:
| Nishinomiya City (access page, updated 2024-05-13) | CLIMBING-net | |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | ¥100 for the first hour, then ¥100 per 30 minutes; capped at ¥800 from 4.5 hours | ¥100 for the first hour, then ¥100 per 30 minutes; ¥800 from 4 hours |
| Entry | 8:00–18:00 | From 8:00; until 18:00 in summer, 17:00 in winter |
| Exit | By 19:00 | By 19:00 |
| Closed | 29 Dec – 3 Jan | Not stated |
A second city page, Kitayama Botanical Garden car park (updated 2018-10-22), gives a "daily cap of ¥800" (一日の上限は800円), opening days "4 January – 28 December", and vehicle limits of 5 m long, 2 m wide and 2.5 m high. Treat the city's notice as authoritative and check again before you go.
- CLIMBING-net notes that spaces are limited and asks climbers to "carpool wherever possible" (出来る限り乗り合わせを心がけたい).
| Train + walk | Bus | Car | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | Hankyu Koyoen Station | Hankyu Shukugawa, Hanshin Nishinomiya, JR Sakura-Shukugawa | North on Route 82 |
| Get off / park | — | "Kayandōchō" (in front of the garden) | Kitayama Botanical Garden paid car park |
| Time | About 15 min to the crag (CLIMBING-net) | 15–45 min depending on route | Entry until 18:00 (city) |
| Watch for | About 40 min to the garden (city) | Check each operator's timetable | Avoid flower season; closed at New Year |
Rules to know before you go
The JFA files Kitayama Park as "access resumed / follow the use rules" (利用再開・利用規約注意).
Why the rules exist: the JFA (in Japanese) says that in January 2006 the manager, the "forest office" (森林事務所), put up signs asking people "not to damage the rocks or climb them" (岩石への損傷や岩登り等の行動はしないように), in response to a resident's complaint that "people are climbing the rocks in Kitayama Park; please stop them because they damage the rock." Local climbers stood down voluntarily while the Hyogo Prefecture Mountaineering Federation (兵庫県山岳連盟) led negotiations with the manager. In the end, "by promising to follow the use rules and etiquette, and with the forest office's understanding, use resumed the following month" (利用ルールやマナーの順守を約束し、森林事務所の理解を得て、翌月に利用再開となった). CLIMBING-net adds that "chipping and climbing bans have happened many times in the past" (過去に何度もチッピングや登攀禁止等の事件が起こっている).
Use rules (CLIMBING-net,
- Don't damage the rock: "never chip or bolt" (チッピング、ボルティングは絶対にしない).
- Clean your chalk: always brush after climbing, "and make sure to remove tick marks" (特にティックマークは確実に消すこと). Wire brushes and brushes with metal handles are banned because they damage the rock.
Etiquette (CLIMBING-net,
- Greet other park users; don't climb half-naked or shout.
- Carry out your rubbish and pick up litter you find; smokers bring a pocket ashtray.
- Keep crash pads clear of the path so that "at least one person can always pass" (必ず人一人が通れる様). The boulders "ショウギ岩", "オ・モロイヤロック" and "バーカーヘッド" sit on the walking path, so don't spread pads out more than needed or gather in large groups to watch.
- No camping in the park; refrain from night bouldering.
- Spread out across the areas to avoid overusing any one of them.
Fire: the three sources differ, so here are all three:
- JFA: "Fire is not banned outright, but bonfires are strictly prohibited. Use stoves in appropriate places, and smokers please bring a pocket ashtray" (火気厳禁ではないが、焚火は厳禁。
- CLIMBING-net: "bonfires are strictly prohibited" (焚火は厳禁); use stoves with an eye to wildfire risk, and "never use them to dry holds" (間違ってもホールドを乾かしたりしない様に).
- Nishinomiya City's list of prohibited acts in the garden includes "use of fire (including cassette stoves)" (火器の使用(カセットコンロ等を含む)) and "smoking" (喫煙), and its FAQ says "the use of fire is prohibited in the park" (公園内では火器の使用は禁止されています). Both pages cover the Kitayama Botanical Garden grounds, which you pass through to park and use the toilets.
Toilets: CLIMBING-net says you can use the toilets at the Kitayama Botanical Garden office; in an emergency, dig a hole and pack out the paper. The city FAQ says the accessible toilet in the 緑の相談所 (green advice centre) is open 10:00–16:00 and not on closing days; garden facilities close on Wednesdays (Thursday if Wednesday is a holiday).
Other: CLIMBING-net's accommodation field says "not allowed" (不可). Registration or access fees: none of the CLIMBING-net, ROCKTOPO, JFA or city pages checked mention any.
Representative areas and problems
The three boulders CLIMBING-net names all sit on the walking path: "ショウギ岩", "オ・モロイヤロック" and "バーカーヘッド". The matching ROCKTOPO entries and problems (2026-10-12):
- 将棋岩と周辺: 将棋入門 (4-kyu), 将棋ノーマル (1-kyu), 将棋スペシャル, スーパー将棋 and 将棋カンテ (all 1-dan), plus アゲハ (3-dan, the only 3-dan at Kitayama Park on ROCKTOPO).
(8-kyu); mostly E-band problems.
(1-dan).
ROCKTOPO's "most climbed" list loads dynamically, so no popularity ranking for Kitayama Park could be read.
