Fudoiwa: Tuff Sport Climbing in Kobe's Ura-Rokko, 15 Minutes from the Station | Japan Climbing Crags

Oct 12, 20261 min
TL;DRA tuff sport crag in the Ura-Rokko area of Kita Ward, Kobe, Hyogo. CLIMBING-net lists 70+ routes and ROCKTOPO 94 (only 5 at 5.12 or harder); both list it as climbable year-round. It is a 15-minute walk from JR Dojo Station on the Fukuchiyama Line. Many bolts are old, the rock is not great, and parking is about five roadside spots.

Fudoiwa (不動岩, ふどういわ) is in Kita Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. CLIMBING-net files it under the Ura-Rokko (裏六甲) area. The rock is tuff, the climbing is mostly bolted lead, and the crag is a 15-minute walk from JR Dojo Station. CLIMBING-net says it has been climbed "since long ago" because the approach from the station is so short (「駅からのアプローチが近いということで古くから登られてきた」), which makes it one of the older crags in Kansai.

Two limits matter before you go: the bolts are often old, and the rock is not especially solid. CLIMBING-net puts it bluntly: "protection is mostly old, and given the rock, there are many routes where you should not fall carelessly" (「プロテクションは古いものが多く、岩質を考えると、むやみにフォールできないルートも多々ある」). It adds that rebolting has been under way since 2006. CLIMBING-net still tags the crag as OK for beginners and intermediates, and most routes are 5.11 or easier. If you lead here, though, you need to judge the bolts yourself and should not treat falling as part of practice.

CLIMBING-net's overview also notes that the rock is "not very good" (「あまり良好とはいえない」) but has some steep sections, and that each era produced routes that rank among Kansai's best. Many routes were chipped in the past, which seems to have stopped in recent years, and there are many eliminate routes (限定ルート), where certain holds are off-limits.

Route count and grade spread (checked 2026-10-12)

The two sites give different numbers:

  • CLIMBING-net: "70 or more" (「70本以上」).
  • ROCKTOPO: 94 routes, of which 92 are face and 2 are crack. Face routes break down as 5.2+: 30, 5.10a+: 29, 5.11a+: 28, 5.12a+: 5. Both crack routes are in the 5.10a+ band.

ROCKTOPO splits the crag into nine sectors (E/M/H is ROCKTOPO's easy/moderate/hard rating):

SectorType and countDifficulty
(Theater / Enman-iwa)face 22E 17, M 5
(Central Ridge, Main Face)face 14, crack 1E 7, M 7, H 1
(Central Ridge, East Face / East Ridge)face 12E 7, M 4, H 1
(Scarface)face 11E 3, M 8
(Central Ridge, West Face)face 11E 4, M 6, H 1
(Hidamari Face)face 7, crack 1E 6, M 2
(MC Face)face 6E 2, M 4
(Big Boulder)face 5E 2, M 3
(Matter Face)face 4M 2, H 2

Who it suits: more than 90% of the routes are 5.11 or easier, and the Theater has the most E-rated lines, so there is plenty for people practicing lead. If you want long-term projects at 5.12 and above, ROCKTOPO lists only five.

When to go

SourceWhat it says about season
CLIMBING-netSeason field: 「通年」 (year-round)
ROCKTOPOThe Fudoiwa page has no season field. It has a monthly activity chart, but the fetched page contained no readable values

Neither crag site says which months are better or why. The only clues are trip reports. A Kojitsu Sanso report from December 2014 says rain the day before left "part of the crag wet" (「岩場の一部が濡れており」), that it was "warm while the sun was on it" (「日が当たっている間は暖かく」) but "cold by evening" (「夕方になるとさすがに寒く」), and suggests hand warmers and a thermos in winter. That is one day's account, not a seasonal rule.

Getting there

  1. Take the JR Fukuchiyama Line to Dojo Station The JR Odekake Net station page gives the address as 「兵庫県神戸市北区道場町生野(いくの)70番地」, says ICOCA works, and lists no coin lockers (コインロッカー なし).
  2. Walk about 15 minutes to the crag (CLIMBING-net: 「JR
  3. Mind the station name: Dojo also has a Kobe Electric Railway station, which the Kobe City Hokushin Ward Office page on Dojo calls 「神戸電鉄道場駅」. You want the JR station.

The last stretch is steep. A 2023 club report by Kobe Chuo Yama-no-Kai says the path from the trailhead to the crag is "extremely steep" (「登山口からゲレンデまでが非常に急登」) and that "in places you have to scramble up rock" (「所々岩を登り上がらないといけません」). The Kojitsu Sanso report says reaching the Theater at the back involves 「固定ロープ、鉄のはしご等、足場の悪いところ」 (fixed ropes, iron ladders, and poor footing).

Train frequency is not covered here; check the timetable on the JR Odekake Net Dojo Station page before you go.

By car

The two sources disagree:

  • CLIMBING-net: "basically avoid driving" (「車は基本的に控えたい」); the parking GPS field is blank.
  • ROCKTOPO: Fudoiwa parking space: "Park on the road shoulder in front of the crag" (「岩場前の路肩に駐車する」), about 5 cars, and "space is limited, so carpool" (「台数が限られるので乗り合わせる等して利用する事」).

In practice there is no proper parking lot, only the shoulder in front of the crag, and CLIMBING-net recommends not driving. If you must drive, carpool to keep the number of cars down. None of the crag sources consulted give an expressway interchange or driving time.

What to know before you go

  • Bolts and falling: CLIMBING-net says many bolts are old and, given the rock, many routes are not ones to fall on carelessly. It does not say the rebolting since 2006 is finished, so check the bolts on every route yourself.
  • Eliminates: CLIMBING-net notes 「限定ルートも多い」. Check the guidebook or ROCKTOPO for any eliminate rules before you climb a route.
  • Rope length: The 2014 Kojitsu Sanso report says the Theater "has many long routes, so a 60 m rope is better than 50 m" (「ロングルートが多く50mより60mロープの方が良い」). That is one report's advice; check route lengths in the topo.
  • Camping, water, toilets: CLIMBING-net's camping field reads 「不可。水、トイレは駅にあり」: no camping, and water and toilets are at the station, not the crag.
  • Parking: Only about five roadside spots; ROCKTOPO asks you to carpool.
  • Bears: Kobe City's Tsukinowaguma (Asian black bear) information page (last updated 2026-07-24) records that sensor cameras set for pest-animal trapping in the forest of Dojo, Kita Ward, filmed a bear on 11 June and 18 July 2026. The July sighting is listed at 「北区道場町の山林(JR道場駅)」. The city thinks it is probably the same animal, and no one was hurt. Its advice includes carrying a bell, radio, or something else that makes noise, not going alone, and limiting outings from evening to early morning (「夕方から朝方の外出は控えめに」). The KOBE Taiyo to Midori no Michi page carries the same notice. These are 2026 sightings; check both pages for the latest before you go.

Registration and fees: neither the CLIMBING-net nor the ROCKTOPO pages mention any. The JFA nationwide access-issue list had no Fudoiwa entry as of 2026-10-12.

Representative sectors and routes

For the layout, use ROCKTOPO's nine sectors (table above), with names as in the original. For routes, the community site theTopo lists 17, graded in French, for example:

  • シアター (Theater): 風呂屋の番台 (5+), 空飛ぶ円盤 (5+), 狐の嫁入り (5), バレンタインドリーム99 (4+)
  • 中央稜 正面壁 (Main Face): リトルボーイ (6a+, marked 「限定有り」, has eliminates), ペガサス (6b+)
  • 西壁 (West Face): たんつぼ小僧 (7a)
  • ビッグボルダー (Big Boulder): イカサマ師 (6c+), マイティジェット (6a)

The Kobe Chuo Yama-no-Kai report gives YDS grades for several Theater routes: マイちゃん 5.6, バレンタインドリーム99 5.8, 狐の嫁入り 5.9, 空飛ぶ円盤 5.10a. The two sources' grades do not always convert cleanly, so go by the guidebook or ROCKTOPO's route list.
