御岳ボルダー (Mitake Boulder) is a bouldering area on the riverbed of the Tama River in Ome, Tokyo, and you can reach it by train from Shinjuku. According to CLIMBING-net, development started in 1982 under 池田功 (Ikeda), and it became "関東で最も親しまれるエリア" (the best-loved area in the Kanto region). This guide covers what to know before you go: rock type, size, season, access, local rules, and the 2018 chipping incident that wiped out several classic problems.
What kind of crag it is
Location: Ome, Tokyo; CLIMBING-net files it under the Okutama district. The boulders are scattered along both banks of the Tama River. ROCKTOPO splits them into eight sub-areas: 玉堂美術館周辺 (around the Gyokudo Art Museum), 忍者返し周辺 (Ninja Gaeshi), デッドエンド周辺 (Deadend), 寒山寺周辺 (Kanzanji temple), 鵜の瀬橋周辺 (Unose Bridge), 杣の小橋エリア, 忍者返し対岸 (opposite bank from Ninja Gaeshi) and "その他" (other).
Rock type: sources disagree.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| ROCKTOPO, CLIMBING-net | Rock-type field: "チャート" (chert) |
| Mountain Project | "Rock is Chert, a highly river polished edgy slopey crimpy area" |
| Wikipedia, theCrag | "limestone / chert" |
| MadBoulder | "chert and limestone boulders" in the text; sidebar says "Limestone" |
| UKC Logbook | "predominantly chert", and "A couple of the less significant boulders may be limestone" |
Both major Japanese crag databases say chert only. Limestone shows up on English-language sites, and UKC limits it to a few minor boulders. Several sources mention river polish: MP says "highly river polished", UKC says "invariably polished".
Size: problem counts vary a lot by site (checked 2026-10-12).
| Source | Problems |
|---|---|
| ROCKTOPO | 271, all boulder problems |
| CLIMBING-net | "250本以上" (250+); its guidebook selects 70 |
| theCrag | 175 |
| Mountain Project | 71 |
| UKC Logbook | 400 ("more than 400 climbs have been recorded") |
Grade spread: of ROCKTOPO's 271 problems, 38 are 10-kyu and up, 39 are 7-kyu and up, 83 are 4-kyu and up, 28 are 1-kyu and up, 42 are 1-dan and up, 27 are 2-dan and up, 13 are 3-dan and up, and 1 is 4-dan. CLIMBING-net tags it "初心者・中級者OK" (fine for beginners and intermediates) with angles of "70~110度". Wikipedia and theCrag both credit Dai Koyamada with the 2001 first ascent of Kanimushi (蟹虫, 8B), "the hardest problem in Mitake" — but Kanimushi is also on the list of problems damaged in the 2018 chipping (see "Notable areas and problems" below).
Who it suits: the grades run from entry level to very hard, and beginners can pick boulders from ROCKTOPO's "簡単なルートの多い岩場" (boulders with many easy problems) list. Watch the landings: CLIMBING-net warns that after heavy rain the riverbed shifts and problems "グレイドが変わったり、登れなくなったりする可能性がある" (may change grade or become unclimbable). UKC reports that as of 2026 the beach under the Ninja Gaeshi boulder is at least 40 cm higher than when most problems were recorded, burying the sit starts, while some landings on the opposite bank have been eroded "turning flat sand into boulder-strewn pits".
When to go
| Source | Season |
|---|---|
| ROCKTOPO | January–May, October–December |
| CLIMBING-net | "通年(ベストは11月から3月、夏は快適ではない)" (year-round; best November to March; summer is uncomfortable) |
| Mountain Project | Late September to May; "The summer time is too hot and humid to get any type of friction on the rock" |
| MadBoulder | Late September to May, "when the air is cool and friction is at its best" |
| UKC Logbook | Year-round, though "summer is usually very hot and humid" |
The sources agree: October to May is the season, with CLIMBING-net naming November to March as best; June to September is hot, humid and low on friction. On sun exposure, MP says the riverbed has "sun on the north side and shade on the south side".
Times to avoid: after heavy rain, when the river rises and landings shift (CLIMBING-net). There is a dam upstream, and UKC warns: "When hearing the water discharge siren, please stay away from the river."
Getting there
| Mode | Key points | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Train | JR Ome Line, Mitake Station (御嶽駅); CLIMBING-net spells it 御岳駅 | JR East Mitake Station timetable (in Japanese) |
| From Shinjuku | On weekends a hiking express runs direct from Shinjuku to Mitake in about 90 minutes, no transfers | PAPERSKY |
| Car | About 15 minutes from central Ome via Ome-kaido or Yoshino-kaido; the drive to Ome varies a lot with traffic | CLIMBING-net |
Station to boulders: CLIMBING-net says to cross Ome-kaido from the station and "バス停横から河原に降りる" (go down to the riverbed beside the bus stop); theCrag gives the approach as about 5 minutes. UKC has more detail: for all the main areas, cross the bridge first; for the museum area head left down the hill; for Ninja Gaeshi walk through the road tunnel and take the footpath down on the left right after it; the Rocky Boulder is another 10 minutes east along the riverside path, and JR Sawai Station is closer if you are going straight there.
Route changes: UKC says a 2019 typhoon destroyed the Mitakekobashi footbridge, and a replacement is still under construction as of 2026. CLIMBING-net says the promenade from Mitakekobashi toward Ninja Gaeshi is closed because of rockfall, so you detour via Yoshino-kaido or Unose Bridge. If you are carrying the 2017 guidebook, the ground may not match the book.
Parking: ROCKTOPO and the Ome Tourism Association give different capacities, so both are shown.
| Car park | ROCKTOPO | Ome Tourism Association |
|---|---|---|
| 御岳苑地駐車場 (Mitake Enchi) | about 20 cars (photo dated 2020/12/14) | 53 cars, paid; free for the first 30 minutes and free from December 1 to the end of February |
| 寒山寺駐車場 (Kanzanji) | about 10 cars, "寒山寺の駐車場を利用可能です" (the temple car park can be used) | 48 cars, free |
| 御岳交流センター駐車場 (Mitake Community Center) | about 5 cars, paid | 16 cars; ¥500 every day in May, August and November, and on weekends and holidays from March 1 to November 30; open 7:00–19:00 (until 17:00 December–February) |
| ことざわ橋周辺駐車場 (around Kotozawa Bridge) | several paid car parks, "路肩駐車厳禁" (no roadside parking) | Not listed |
| チキンドーム周辺駐車スペース (near Chicken Dome) | listed, no capacity or fee given | Not listed |
CLIMBING-net separately says "駐車は発電所隣りが一般的。3月~11月末まで1時間100円、1日800円" (people usually park next to the power station; ¥100 per hour or ¥800 per day from March to end of November) without naming the car park. Of the car parks above, only the Mitake Community Center has published opening hours; check the others before you go.
Rules to know before you go
- No night climbing: ROCKTOPO's banner says "ナイトボルダーは禁止です" (night bouldering is prohibited). The Japan Free Climbing Association (JFA) post (2024-01-07) it links to shares a notice from the local 御岳クライマーズコミュニティ (Mitake Climbers Community): because of complaints from residents, climbers refrain from climbing "夜8時〜夜明け頃まで" (from 8 p.m. until around dawn), and repeated violations could get the whole area closed to climbing.
- Parking bans: ROCKTOPO's banner says "玉堂美術館上のトイレ前駐車場に駐車しないこと。(トイレ利用での駐車は可)" (do not park in the lot in front of the toilets above the Gyokudo Art Museum; stopping to use the toilets is fine). Roadside parking around Kotozawa Bridge is strictly prohibited.
- Don't climb the chipped problems: CLIMBING-net says the problems chipped in December 2018 "現在これらの課題は、正式な課題として認められていない" (are not currently recognized as official problems). The list is in the next section.
- It's a tourist spot: CLIMBING-net asks climbers to behave "観光地であることを十分に考慮して" (with full awareness that this is a tourist area). UKC adds that the river is busy with hiking, fishing, canoeing and rafting: "When canoeing races are taking place, please do not touch the ropes placed across the river."
- Camping: CLIMBING-net says there are many places on the riverbed where you could pitch a tent, "が公認されてはいない" (but it is not officially permitted), and warns about rising water.
- Toilets: UKC says public toilets are on the north bank near Unose Bridge and the old Mitakekobashi site; use them.
- JFA access-issue list: the JFA list of access-problem areas (in Japanese) does not include Mitake Boulder (checked 2026-10-12).
- Registration and access fees: none of the sources checked mention any.
What to bring: crash pads. UKC and theCrag both say you can rent them from maunga, a used outdoor gear shop in Mitake, and UKC recommends you "book in advance, especially at weekends". maunga's page lists its main Mitake shop as open 9:00–19:00.
Notable areas and problems
The Ninja Gaeshi boulder (忍者返しの岩) is the most famous one. CLIMBING-net calls its namesake problem, Ninja Gaeshi, "ハードなボルダリングの登竜門" (the gateway to hard bouldering). PAPERSKY says it was the first problem in Japan to be graded 1-kyu, "setting the benchmark for that difficulty level across the land".
The 2018 chipping: according to a CLIMBING-net report from 2018-12-27, five holds on the Ninja Gaeshi boulder were chipped with tools. The affected problems are 蟹, 虫, 忍者返し, 蟹虫, 蜥蜴/蛙SD, 蟹亀返し, 忍者クライマー返し, 蟹忍者クライマー返し and 蟹蛙. The report quotes Rock Climbing magazine judging that the problems became "1-1.5グレード難しくなっている" (1 to 1.5 grades harder). 北山真 (Kitayama) of Rock & Snow wrote that climbing them amounts to endorsing the chipping, and that not climbing them "せめてもの抵抗" (is the least we can do as resistance).
Sources treat this differently. CLIMBING-net's crag page says the problems are no longer official. ROCKTOPO still lists "忍者返し(1級)" as a popular problem, and MP still lists Ninja Gaeshi as a classic (V5-6). PAPERSKY's 2025 article describes crowds of climbers queuing at the "Ninja" boulder on weekends. Whether to climb it is your call, but know about the dispute.
Other frequently listed problems (names as given by each source):
- ROCKTOPO's "3大クラシックボルダー" (three great classic boulders): 忍者返し, デッドエンド (Deadend) and エイハブ船長 (Captain Ahab); its popular list also includes マミ岩中央 (4-kyu).
- Mountain Project classics: Pinchoverhang boulder 4Q (V3), Mami right (V3-4), Toketta Softcream - Oukaku Left/Right (V3-4), New Soul (V4), Mine No Yu (V5-6), Deadend (V5-6), Kodomo Gaeshi (V7-), Pinch Overhang (V7), and Fat Blocker, Sunobori and Hono (all V7).
- PAPERSKY describes 嶺の夕 (Mine-no-Yu), a tall vertical wall you can see from the bridge in front of the station: "By the fall of 2024, some of the holds had faded, but the problem is still doable."
- CLIMBING-net: 日影岩 and the Rocky Boulder downstream of Unose Bridge have 6 to 8 top-rope problems, because "下地が悪く、ロープなしでは登れない" (the landings are bad and they can't be climbed without a rope).
