Oct 18, 20261 min
TL;DRA cluster of limestone crags on the floor of the Valle del Sarca, just north of Lake Garda in Trentino. theCrag lists 3,191 routes; the 2018 guidebook covers 136 crags and 5,260 routes. Mostly single-pitch sport, plus multi-pitches hundreds of metres long. theCrag puts high season from early spring to late autumn, with climbing year round. Take the train to Rovereto, then a Trentino Trasporti bus. Parking at popular crags is scarce, and since August 2026 the Laghel area has been closed after a rockfall.

Arco is a small town at the southern tip of Trentino, a few kilometres inland from the north shore of Lake Garda. It sits on the floor of the Valle del Sarca, with grey and white limestone walls lining both sides. Planetmountain writes that "Ever since the early 1980s ... has been one of the undisputed centers of sport climbing", and the valley now holds hundreds of crags and thousands of sport routes.

This post covers the decisions to make before going: whether it suits you, which months, how to reach the crags without a car, which crags are currently closed, and what to know about parking.

What kind of crag is it

Rock and style. It is all limestone. theCrag labels the whole Sarca Valley "Mostly Sport climbing" and says it runs from slabs to steep overhangs and from boulders to multi-pitches: "There is enough for everyone". Planetmountain describes the most popular crag as "compact limestone, up edges and tufas" (Massone).

Size. The sources count different areas (checked 2026-10-18):

SourceCountCoverage
theCrag Valle del Sarca3,191 routesThe Sarca Valley, including upstream areas such as Sarche and Pietramurata
Arco Falesie (Versante Sud, 2018 edition)136 crags, 5,260 routesArco, Sarca Valley, Valle dei Laghi, Giudicarie, Val di Non, Trento, Rovereto

The guidebook's blurb says only a few of the 136 are very busy (Massone, Nago, La Gola), while many others "are climbed by very few people". Grades run from vertical slabs and family routes up to 9a+.

Polish and crowds. theCrag is blunt about the wear: "Many routes in the well-known sectors, such as 'Massone', are already very polished". Around Easter, German and international climbers pour in, but "there is always a crag that will be deserted, even during high season".

Multi-pitch. In theCrag's area list, Monte Colodri has 112 routes, Placche Zebrate is listed at 260 m, Monte Casale at 560 m and Monte Brento at 920 m ("Mostly Trad"). The classic multi-pitch close to town is Mescalito on Colodri (see Routes by level).

Competition. theCrag's history section mentions "the first Arco Rock Masters in 1985". Planetmountain notes that the 1987 Rock Master was won by Lynn Hill and Stefan Glowacz.

When to go

theCrag's overall view: "While high season is from early spring to late fall, Arco offers climbing year round". With so many crags in the valley, there is always one that is sunny or shady and at the right altitude.

In practice you pick crags by aspect. Planetmountain on several classics:

CragAspectSeason
Massone / PolicromuroEast, shade in the afternoonBest in spring and autumn; summer afternoons are possible when the Ora wind blows
CalvarioEast, shade in the afternoonSpring and autumn
Nago (Segrom)SouthPlanetmountain says year round, best in spring and autumn; but closed since a July 2022 fire, see below
BelvedereSouthSpring and autumn
Spiaggia delle LucertoleSouth, right above the lakeOften climbable on windy summer afternoons with the Ora
Mescalito (Monte Colodri)Sun until 13:00Spring and autumn

Rain. The Garda Trentino site says Abissi sits under a natural overhanging roof that "gives excellent shelter when it rains". It has about 40 routes, all 6b and up.

Public transport

The Garda Trentino train page says Rovereto station is served year round by Trenitalia, ÖBB and DB, and that Trentino Trasporti runs regular buses from Rovereto station to Torbole, Riva del Garda and Arco. It notes that "bus tickets cannot be purchased on board", so buy before boarding. Coming from the south, you can also get off at Desenzano, Peschiera or Verona and take an ATV bus north along the lake.

Bus&Go crag shuttle. Bus&Go is a demand-responsive minibus for Arco, Riva del Garda and Nago-Torbole. You book through an app, it only runs between existing bus stops, and a ride costs €2 each way (free with the Garda Guest Card). The regular network runs from 29 May to 31 December.

The crags have a separate "crag connection" (servizio falesie) to Laghel, Padaro and Massone / Policromuro, on its own timetable:

MonthsDaysBookable hours
May, OctoberFriday to Sunday9:00–13:00, 14:00–18:00
June–SeptemberDailySame
November–DecemberSameSame, Laghel and Padaro only (no Policromuro); suspended on 25 December

The crag service can only be booked from stops within Arco, at €2 a ride. If you stay in another town, you book one ride to Arco and then the crag connection, €4 each way in total. Laghel is currently closed; see the rules below.

theCrag's caveat: "While some crags are in walking distance from town or the camp sites, many will require you to have a car or transport".

Driving

theCrag places Arco less than 40 km south-west of Trento, reachable from the south-west via the Milan–Brescia–Venice E70 or from the east via the Innsbruck–Trento–Verona A22. For Massone, take the SS45bis from Arco towards Trento and turn right after less than 1 km (Planetmountain).

Parking

At the popular crags the official message is the same: few spaces, so walk up.

  • Massone / Policromuro: Planetmountain says "There is limited parking below the crag" and recommends walking 10 minutes from Massone village or 20 minutes from Arco. Its crag page also notes that the land "is privately owned - please be a respectful as possible".
  • Abissi: the official site says "No parking on the roadside"; walk 10 minutes from Massone or 20 from Arco.
  • Family San Martino (the kids' crag): leave the car in San Martino and walk 20 minutes (Garda Trentino).
  • Massi di Prabi: the path starts opposite the town swimming-pool car park, 2 minutes away (Garda Trentino).
  • Spiaggia delle Lucertole: roadside parking after the lakeside tunnel, with few spaces; Planetmountain warns "don't leave anything in your car".

Rules to know before you go

Private land. theCrag's access section: "Many crags in the area of Arco are located on private land", and problems with landowners "popped up in the past and continue to pop up from time to time". Watch for local closures and restrictions. Planetmountain's Massone page says climbing is currently prohibited at Il Pueblo "from Hochzeitspfeiler rightwards".

Laghel rockfall closure (2026). On 25 August 2026 part of the slope above Laghel collapsed. The Comune di Arco issued urgent order no. 11/2026, banning climbing on the crags and slabs above Laghel and use of the access path "fino a espressa revoca" — until expressly revoked (il T quotidiano). The town's 7 October notice says repair work is about to start, including a rockfall barrier about 80 m long and 5 m high, with an estimated 80 days of work. It repeats that the crags, slabs and path are closed, because the area "è ancora frequentata da rocciatori" — climbers are still using it.

Scheduled maintenance closures. The town closes crags, access paths included, for scaling and cleaning. The winter 2025–26 round covered six crags; the five with published dates (la Busa):

CragClosed
Muro dell'Asino15–17 Dec 2025
Family San Martino18–19 Dec 2025
Massi di Prabi22–23 Dec 2025
Policromuro12–16 Jan 2026
Abissi19–21 Jan 2026

Breaking these orders falls under article 650 of the Italian penal code (failure to comply with an order of the authorities).

Nesting birds. In May 2026 il Dolomiti reported that Oltrezengol (parete Catulo) in Nago-Torbole was closed for nesting Alpine swifts, crag martins and other birds, with LIPU, WWF and other groups sending volunteers and wildlife wardens during the breeding season.

Bolt maintenance. The official safety page says the crags on its site belong to the Garda Trentino Outdoor Park, and qualified professionals check and replace the equipment every year. It still reminds you that rock faces are natural terrain and "can therefore be unpredictable".

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

Planetmountain says Massone's lower section, Massone Basso, "is ideal for those who climb between 5a-7a". Garda Trentino also lists Family San Martino at 3a–6b and Massi di Prabi with 46 routes at 3c–7a. Mountain Project notes "a number of beginner crags to practice on".

Intermediate: 6a+ to 6c+ (YDS 5.10b–5.11c)

Both Massone Basso and Spiaggia delle Lucertole (6a+–7c) have routes at this level. Garda Trentino's Abissi page lists about 40 routes from 6b+, sheltered under the overhang when it rains.

Mescalito. First climbed ground-up on 25 November 1982 by Renato Bernard and Renzo Vettori, originally graded VI+/A2 and since tamed with bolted belays and pitches. Planetmountain calls it "one of the most beautiful rock climbs in the entire Sarca valley", though the opening corner, part of pitch 2 and the pitch 3 crux are polished. Park at the Climbing Stadium car park, descend via the Colodri via ferrata, and bring 12 quickdraws (Planetmountain). Laghel is also on Monte Colodri (its south side, per Mountain Project), so check the Arco council notices while the rockfall closure lasts.

Advanced: 7a to 7c+ (YDS 5.11d–5.13a)

Planetmountain describes Massone's middle section, La Valletta, as 7a–8a, 35 m and slightly overhanging, and it "requires stamina and finger strength". Spiaggia delle Lucertole has 19 routes at 6a+–7c, faces south and catches the Ora wind on summer afternoons.

Spiaggia delle Lucertole's slabs were put up in the early 1980s by Roberto Bassi, Heinz Mariacher, Luisa Iovane and Manolo. They have been rebolted to modern standards, but Planetmountain warns that "even if 7a may sound like a walk in the park, these routes are anything but trivial". Roadside parking is limited; leave nothing in the car.

Expert: 8a and up (YDS 5.13b and up)

Il Pueblo, Massone's right-hand section, is very steep and starts at 7c. Planetmountain says climbing is prohibited at Pueblo "from Hochzeitspfeiler rightwards"; all routes below are in the permitted part. Mountain Project also lists Gotico as "one of the premier sectors of hard Arco sport climbing", with 19 routes from 5.11c to 5.15a.

Planetmountain lists 163 routes at Massone, 4a–9b, up to 40 m, and recommends a 70 m rope. The routes are popular, polished and often crowded.

Nago (Segrom): currently closed. A wildfire on Monte Altissimo in July 2022 reached the cliffs, and the mayor of Nago-Torbole ordered the crags in the area closed (Planetmountain, 2022, in Italian). Montagna.TV reported in April 2024 (in Italian) that restoration was under way with a reopening hoped for that autumn, and warned that climbing there meanwhile risks fines. But when checked on 2026-10-18, theCrag and 27crags still list it as closed, as is Le Trincee above it. Check whether it has officially reopened before you go. Before the fire, Planetmountain listed 120 routes, 4b–9a, mostly long and technical, with a lower sector suited to families.
