Cala Gonone: Limestone Sport Climbing on Sardinia's East Coast — Sea Cliffs, Gorges and a Giant Sea Cave | Italy Climbing Crags

Oct 18, 20261 min
TL;DRA seaside village of Dorgali on Sardinia's east coast. theCrag lists 1,001 routes, mostly single-pitch sport, across fifty-plus sectors from slabs to the huge Millennium sea cave. Autumn to spring is best; summer is too hot, though some sectors go into afternoon shade. Corroding bolts by the sea are the main hazard, and seaside sectors are being rebolted with titanium. By public transport, ARST line 520 runs from Nuoro via Dorgali into the village.

Cala Gonone is a seaside village in the municipality of Dorgali on Sardinia's east coast, facing the Gulf of Orosei. theCrag lists 1,001 routes here; the local climbing association Climbing Sardinia opens its free online crag guide with "Cala Gonone is Sardinia's climbing paradise", with over fifty sectors of sport and multi-pitch routes.

This post covers the decisions to make before going: whether it suits you, which months, how to get into the village, and which sectors need extra care with the bolts.

What kind of crag is it

Rock and style. Climb Europe says "the majority of the climbing here is single pitch sport routes" on "hard limestone", from slabs and vertical walls to big overhangs. The local site calagonone.eu describes the limestone walls of the coastal and mountain Supramonte ("pareti calcaree del supramonte marino e montano").

Size. Each source counts differently (checked 2026-10-18):

SourceCountNote
theCrag1,001 routes"Mostly Sport climbing"
Climbing Sardinia"Over 50 climbing sectors"no total route count
Rock Climbing in Cala Gonone (Corrado Conca, 2025)"over 700 routes"selective, 9 areas

Sectors. theCrag and Climb Europe each list twenty-plus sectors. The larger or more distinctive ones:

SectortheCrag routesCharacter
Cala Fuili251beach plus the Codula Fuili gorge; Climb Europe gives 5a–8c for the beach; Pederiva in the gorge has long tufas
Cala Luna179beach crag reached by boat or a 90-minute-plus walk; Climbing Sardinia says the bolts are old and rusty and advises choosing another crag (see rules below)
Margheddie113Climb Europe gives 4b–8a, up to 150 m
La Poltrona76one of the oldest crags, technical leaning slabs that Climbing Sardinia says need "good balance and trust on one's feet"
Biddiriscottai60sea cliff north of the village; single pitches plus 10 multi-pitches at 6a–6a+; the first crag in Sardinia rebolted in titanium
Buchi Arta53Climbing Sardinia says long, well-equipped routes, 7a max
Millennium35huge sea cave; Climb Europe gives 6a–8c+, mostly 6s and 7s, and compares it to the Grande Grotta on Kalymnos
Grotta dei Colombi4reached by abseiling in from the top; Climb Europe says fully bolted multi-pitches up to 210 m at 6b–6c

Climbing Sardinia also mentions S'atta Ruja on the other side of the tunnel, above Dorgali: over 90 routes, 6a–7b, vertical to overhanging.

Who it suits. Anyone who wants slabs, tufa caves and sea-cliff multi-pitch in one place. Beginners and intermediates can start on slabs such as La Poltrona and Budinetto, or on Buchi Arta. For 7th grade and up, Climbing Sardinia points to Pederiva, Thailandia, Raoni and Zedda Piras in the Fuili gorge, and to Millennium.

When to go

SourceSeason
Climb Europe"from the autumn through to the spring as it is just too hot in the summer months"
calagonone.euspring and autumn are best; the sea keeps the climate mild, so you can climb "tutti i mesi dell'anno" (every month)

In summer, pick shaded sectors. Climbing Sardinia lists easy summer options, all shaded only in the afternoon:

  • Sardi di Cuore: shade from 2 pm, long walk.
  • Fuili Spigolo: shade from 2 pm; easy to reach, but crowded and a bit slippery.
  • Fuili Ferry: shade only from 5 pm.

Buchi Arta is "on shade until 1 pm", good for mornings.

In winter, pick sunny ones. The same page says the choice widens in winter, with La Poltrona and Budinetto as the classics. Its sector cards are tagged "Winter crag" or "Climb all year", along with sun times.

Wind. calagonone.eu's transport page says the characteristic wind here is the Mistral, gusty and irregular, channelled by the mountain gorges.

Public transport

The line 520 timetable of ARST, Sardinia's regional bus company, is "CALA GONONE – DORGALI – OLIENA – NUORO". On the table, the 06:55 departure from Nuoro Centro Intermodale reaches Cala Gonone's Via Cala Luna-Poste stop at 08:04; Dorgali to the village takes about 20 minutes. Each run is tagged with an operating condition — FER (feriale, non-holiday days), FEST (holidays), SCO (school days) and so on — so a given time does not run every day. Check the calendar on the original table before you go.

The local site calagonone.eu lists ARST office phone numbers; Nuoro is (+39) 0784 290800.

Inside the village, the crags are still spread along the coast and in the gorges. For Millennium, theCrag says there is a 1.8 km gravel path after parking. Cala Luna is farther from any road: Climbing Sardinia says most people get there by boat, and the walk from Buchi Arta takes 90 minutes.

Driving

The route given by Hotel La Favorita: from Olbia take the SS131DCN towards Nuoro–Cagliari, exit for Dorgali after about 70 km, follow the SP38 to the SS125 towards Dorgali, then the SP26 to Cala Gonone. Olbia airport is about 120 km and about 1 h 30; Cagliari airport about 210 km.

calagonone.eu advises that once you reach Dorgali from the north, "ignore the instruction of the navigator", which tends to pick the shortest but difficult road, and follow the signs through the tunnel on Monte Bardia instead. SardegnaTurismo also describes the view of the Gulf of Orosei opening up just after a short tunnel outside Dorgali.

Parking

None of the sources describe a general parking rule for the crags. theCrag gives coordinates for the Millennium parking (40.290570, 9.640568). The Planetmountain page for Millennium Bug says to follow signs for "Carto/Osalla" from the village, carry straight on up the cement road at the first hairpin, and follow it as it turns into a dirt track to the lip of the cave.

Rules to know before you go

Bolts by the sea corrode — the biggest hazard. A 2021 update on calagonone.eu says anchors at seaside sectors have failed in the past because galvanic corrosion ("correnti galvaniche") eats expansion bolts from the inside while they look fine outside. Rebolting status at that time:

  • Biddiriscottai: Climbing Sardinia, with Louis Piguet and Mario Ogliengo, had replaced more than half the single pitches with titanium. Climbing Sardinia's page now counts 46 titanium routes and 5 multi-pitches.
  • Millennium: Maurizio Oviglia had re-equipped some routes with marine-grade stainless bolts and titanium anchors. theCrag's Millennium page still carries a "Corroded bolts" warning on a route.
  • Cala Fuili beach: Louis Piguet had rebolted it in titanium; parts of Codula Fuili were rebolted by ASD Ortoblock of Nuoro.
  • calagonone.eu then called the Cala Luna beach and the Puschtra sector at Cala Fuili "molto, molto pericoloso" (very, very dangerous). Climbing Sardinia rebolted Puschtra in titanium in 2024.
  • Cala Luna has still not been rebolted. Climbing Sardinia's sector page says all its bolts are insecure, the rock is often greasy and rockfall from the top is common: "please choose a different location". It also explains why there is no titanium: the crag was first bolted without permission, it is a protected landmark, it cannot get a rebolting permit, and all the gear may eventually be removed.

Titanium bolts need different habits. A January 2025 note from Climbing Sardinia explains that titanium resists corrosion but not abrasion, and that steel and aluminium corrode much faster in contact with it:

  • If your partner wants to second on top rope, add your own carabiner at the anchor so the rope wears that instead of the rappel ring.
  • Do not leave quickdraws on the wall; they can seize and become impossible to remove. If you cannot reach the top, leave a single carabiner for the next person to strip, or lower off a bolt — the bolts are wide with a round section.

Rope and quickdraws. Climb Europe says a 60 m rope and up to 16 quickdraws cover the single pitches; for bolted multi-pitch, a single 70 m rope plus a few slings, with some routes needing double ropes.

The Millennium approach. theCrag says that after the gravel path you head down towards the sea to a section of fixed ropes. "It's not a full-on via ferrata" and a single PAS or sling is enough, but there is one spot where a fall would be game over and clipping in is worth it. Car to cave is about 45 minutes.

National park. SardegnaTurismo says Ziu Martine beach, about 3 km from the village, lies within the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu National Park (Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu); theCrag also lists Ziu Martine as a sector. The sources found list no climbing ban or bird-nesting closure; the only permit issue mentioned is Cala Luna, above.

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Mountain Project's Classic Climbs lists 17 routes by popularity and rating, from 5a to 7c; single pitches in the Cala Fuili canyon sectors come from thetopo's route list (Climbing Sardinia). "Rating" is the average user rating on thetopo. Where sources disagree on a grade, both are shown.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

The easy sectors Climbing Sardinia names are Sardi di Cuore, Fuili Spigolo and Fuili Ferry, which go into shade on summer afternoons, and the La Poltrona and Budinetto slabs in winter (see the season section above). On thetopo most routes in the Ferry sector are 4 to 5+.

Sources differ on when Millennium Bug was first climbed: Planetmountain says Luca Giupponi and Maurizio Oviglia established it ground-up in June 2011 and freed it that October; theCrag gives "FA: 2010". Planetmountain quotes Oviglia's warning that, with so much traversing, "it's often more dangerous for the second than the leader". theCrag's Millennium page also lists Harry Potter and Gli Dei tossici, both three-star 7b+ routes.
