Isili is a small town in central Sardinia, north of the island's capital Cagliari. Italy's official tourism site, italia.it, lists it alongside Cala Gonone, Jerzu, the Supramonte and the Iglesiente as places in Sardinia not to miss, and says its crags "attract the best climbers in Europe".
This post helps you decide whether the steep style suits you, which months to go, whether you can manage without a car, and which sectors to head for first. For a comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview.
What kind of crag is it
Steep, big holds, short routes. The local association Climbing Sardinia's Isili area page says Isili is known for its "extreme overhangs and good holds": "the reign of pumped forearms", a severe school for stamina and strength. Climb Europe says much the same: "outrageously steep rock", lots of roofs and overhangs, athletic moves on big holds and pockets, and because the holds are big, the grades don't climb excessively high.
Layout. climbingitaly says that apart from Conca Manna, all the sectors sit along a small valley whose river feeds Lake San Sebastiano, spreading south from Urania. Urania is a 45-degree wall that starts with a 4 m horizontal roof. A few older sectors became unreachable when the reservoir filled in 2008 and are left out of the guide.
Scale. climbingitaly lists 12 sectors with about 316 routes in total; Climb Europe says "over 300 single pitch sport routes" across 9 main areas, 5a to 8c; italia.it also says "over 300". Most routes are 10–20 m, and Climb Europe says a 50 m rope is plenty.
History. climbingitaly says Maurizio Oviglia found the crags in 1988 and started by bolting Pietra Filosofale, joined later by Marchi, Piras, Lecis, Mocci and the local climber Marino. Only top climbers have done Urania's hardest routes, among them Adam Ondra, Steve McClure and Arthur Kubista.
Sectors. Aspect, season and approach come from climbingitaly's sector pages (checked October 2026):
| Sector | Routes | Angle | Sun | Season | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urania | 60 | Overhanging | Afternoon | Winter | 5 min |
| Pietra filosofale | 50 | Vertical | Afternoon | Winter | 20 min |
| Conca Manna | 43 | Overhanging | Morning | All year | 10 min |
| Corvo spaziale | 37 | Vertical | Afternoon | Winter | 15 min |
| Paese dei balossi | 21 | Vertical | Afternoon | Winter | 15 min |
| Corvo solitario | 19 | Overhanging | Morning | Winter | 25 min |
| Muro blu | 14 | Vertical | Morning | Winter | 25 min |
| Paese dei nuraghe | 13 | Vertical | Afternoon | Winter | 10 min |
The rest (Campo dei fiori, Cubo magico, Il Pentagramma, Ombra del dubbio) have 12–17 routes each and are also tagged as winter crags.
Who it suits. It's best for anyone who wants to train steep endurance. Climbers still in the 5s and 6s have options too: climbingitaly says the easiest sectors are Muro Blu and Paese dei Nuraghe, with plenty of 5a–6a, and Pietra filosofale is a long row of vertical 6a–6c+ short routes.
When to go
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| climbingitaly | "Excluding the summer for the extreme heat and the presence of ticks, all other seasons are great"; in winter and spring the fields to the far sectors can be wet and muddy, so wear wellies or waterproof shoes |
| Climb Europe | Best from October to May, with spring and autumn optimal; summer is possible, but only a few sectors have shade |
| climbingitaly sector tags | 11 of the 12 sectors are tagged "winter crag"; only Conca Manna is "all year" |
Avoid summer. This is the opposite of Ulassai on the east side. For summer climbing in Sardinia, go to Ulassai, at about 800 m and with plenty of shady sectors.
In winter, follow the sun. Most sectors get afternoon sun, so winter afternoons are the most comfortable; Conca Manna, Muro blu and Corvo solitario get the morning sun.
Getting there
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Cagliari | Cagliari |
| Middle | ARST's Monserrato–Mandas–Isili narrow-gauge railway | SS131 north, then the SS128 towards Senorbì, all the way to Isili |
| Last leg | The crags are in the valley north of town, towards Nurallao | From town drive north towards Nurallao; the white walls appear before the lake |
Public transport
The regional transport company ARST runs the Monserrato–Isili narrow-gauge railway, from Monserrato in the Cagliari metro area through Senorbì and Mandas to Isili. Most runs on the timetable stop at Mandas. Going by the October 2026 timetable, only four a day reach Isili:
- Arriving: 07:55, 11:40, 13:41, 15:01
- Departing Isili: 08:24, 12:51, 14:05, 15:43
Check the timetable for your date before you go.
When there's engineering work, the whole line switches to replacement buses. For example, the regional transport site Sardegna Mobilità announced that the entire line would be closed from 15 to 27 June 2026, with replacement buses whose stops don't necessarily match the stations.
The sources I found don't say how long the walk is from Isili station to the crags. The crags are in the valley north of town, and in practice most people drive; if you come by train, stay in town and ask your host for directions.
Driving
The regional trail network site Sardegna Sentieri gives the route: from Cagliari take the SS131 to the junction with the SS128 for Senorbì, and continue to the Isili junction. climbingitaly says the crags are easy to find: drive north out of town towards Nurallao and you'll see the white walls before the lake.
Parking
The sources I found give no general parking rules. Urania is 5 minutes from the car, and the furthest sector, Campo dei fiori, is a 30-minute walk (climbingitaly). In winter and spring the walk to the far sectors crosses muddy fields.
Rules to know before you go
Summer ticks. climbingitaly explicitly mentions ticks in summer as well as the heat. Check yourself after walking through grass and fields.
Muddy fields. In winter and spring the fields to the far sectors get wet and muddy; climbingitaly suggests wellies or waterproof shoes. The sources I found say nothing about private land or access rules.
Bolts and rebolting. climbingitaly's Urania route table gives rebolting years: Wonderland in 2020; Kermit Tom, Dissonanze, World music and Raga in 2022. Plenty of routes on the same table were bolted in the 1990s with no rebolt listed. At Pietra filosofale, Plexiglass and Work in progress are marked "Dangerous route!".
Rope length. Climb Europe says the routes are short and a 50 m rope is enough; Conca Manna has some 25–30 m routes (climbingitaly), so a 60 m rope is safer there.
Closures and bans. None of the sources I found list a climbing ban or closure notice for any sector.
Rescue. CNSAS Sardegna says that in Sardinia you call 112 and ask for the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Sardegna; give the town and how long the walk from the car was.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Routes, lengths and years come from climbingitaly's sector route tables (checked October 2026), so the tables rest on a single source; first ascents from other sources are noted.
Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)
climbingitaly recommends Muro blu and Paese dei nuraghe; the left side of Corvo spaziale also has a row of short 4–5c routes.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ombrina | 5a | 5.7 | 7 m, single pitch | Muro blu | climbingitaly; 2008 |
| Ippocampo | 5b | 5.8 | 10 m, single pitch | Muro blu | climbingitaly |
| Musdea nera | 5c | 5.9 | 10 m, single pitch | Muro blu | climbingitaly |
| Aria di neve | 5c | 5.9 | 15 m, single pitch | Paese dei nuraghe | climbingitaly |
| Godzilla | 5a | 5.7 | 17 m, single pitch | Corvo spaziale | climbingitaly |
| Born to be wild | 6a | 5.10a | 14 m, single pitch | Pietra filosofale | climbingitaly |
Intermediate: 6a+ to 6c+ (YDS 5.10b–5.11c)
Nearly all 50 routes at Pietra filosofale fall between 6a and 7a, making it the place for this grade; the right side of Urania also has a few 6b–6c+.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fonzie | 6a+ | 5.10b | 11 m, single pitch | Pietra filosofale | climbingitaly |
| Mizio 91 | 6b | 5.10c | 11 m, single pitch | Pietra filosofale | climbingitaly |
| Laguna blu | 6c | 5.11a/b | 12 m, single pitch | Pietra filosofale | climbingitaly |
| Kermit Tom | 6b | 5.10c | 20 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1995, rebolted 2022 |
| Spaghetti rock | 6c+ | 5.11c | 25 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1998 |
| Universi paralleli | 6c+ | 5.11c | 30 m, single pitch | Conca Manna | climbingitaly; one of the few long 6s in a steep sector |
| Mazinka | 6c+ | 5.11c | 15 m, single pitch | Corvo spaziale | climbingitaly |
Advanced: 7a to 7c+ (YDS 5.11d–5.13a)
This is where the steep sectors, Urania, Conca Manna and Corvo solitario, come into their own.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strategia obliqua | 7a+ | 5.12a | 22 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1992 |
| Husky | 7b | 5.12b | 22 m, single pitch | Corvo solitario | Climb Europe: typical of Isili, "overhanging, requiring super athletic moves on large holds" |
| Big foot | 7b+ | 5.12c | 15 m, single pitch | Corvo spaziale | climbingitaly |
| Dissonanze | 7c | 5.12d | 17 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1992, rebolted 2022 |
| Italian style | 7c | 5.12d | 20 m, single pitch | Conca Manna | climbingitaly |
| Wonderland | 7c+ | 5.13a | 17 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1992, rebolted 2020 |
Expert: 8a and up (YDS 5.13b and up)
Urania is one of the island's densest walls of steep 8s. Climbing Sardinia's list of Sardinia's hardest routes includes three Urania routes.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| World music | 8a+ | 5.13c | 17 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly; 1993, rebolted 2022 |
| Ciclope | 8b | 5.13d | 28 m, single pitch | Conca Manna | climbingitaly: first ascent Davide Pagano |
| Raga | 8b+ | 5.14a | 17 m, single pitch | Urania | Climbing Sardinia: Arthur Kubista 1998; rebolted 2022 |
| Fantasia e verità nel Tanca Farrà | 8b+ | 5.14a | 17 m, single pitch | Urania | Climbing Sardinia: Kubista 1998 |
| Filu 'e Ferru | 8b+ | 5.14a | 13 m, single pitch | Urania | climbingitaly: bolted 2010, first ascent by Johannes Hoffman in April 2022 |
| La signora con la falce | 8c | 5.14b | 15 m, single pitch | Urania | Climbing Sardinia: first ascent Steve McClure 2004; climbingitaly gives 1996 as the bolting year |
