Ulassai and Jerzu: Sardinia's Biggest Sport Climbing Area, Climbable Even in Summer | Italy Climbing Crags

Oct 19, 20261 min
TL;DRTwo villages in the Ogliastra hills of eastern Sardinia. theCrag lists 983 routes at Ulassai and 359 at Jerzu, and the local guidebook gives about 1,300 for the whole area, mostly 6a–7c+ and almost all single-pitch sport. At around 800 m with many crags in shade all day, it's the island's go-to summer venue, though spring and autumn are best. Most crags are within walking distance of the village, so you can stay without a car, but the only public transport is a bus of three-plus hours from Cagliari.

Ulassai and Jerzu are two villages about 5 km apart in the Ogliastra hills of eastern Sardinia, surrounded by the flat-topped limestone tablelands known locally as "tacchi". The local climbing association Climbing Sardinia opens its Ulassai & Jerzu area page with: "Ulassai and Jerzu are the most popular climbing destination in Sardinia during the summer".

This post helps you decide whether it suits your level, which months to go, whether you can manage without a car, and which sector suits which weather. Forty-five minutes' drive east is Baunei, known for its multi-pitch, and to the north is Cala Gonone. For a comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview.

What kind of crag is it

Limestone single-pitch sport. The local development team, Climbing Ulassai (Nannai Climbing Home), says there are a dozen good trad routes, but the great majority are bolted single pitches, from slightly slabby to moderately steep: "There are few routes steeper than 15 degrees overhung". UKClimbing's 2018 destination guide says the rock in the main crag, Canyon Sa Tappara, is limestone "but it has a sandstone feel to it", with mainly technical, sustained lines. There's very little multi-pitch; climbingitaly says only Su Sussiu has a couple.

Scale. Counts by source (checked October 2026):

How the two villages differ. climbingitaly's area page says Jerzu was developed first: in 1989 Oviglia, Dessì, Garippa and others started bolting at Il Castello, then Isola del Tesoro and Palazzo d'Inverno, which together now have over 240 routes. Bolting at Ulassai began in 2002, and took off on a large scale in 2011 when six friends opened the climbers' guesthouse Nannai Climbing Home in the village. Ulassai now has more than twice as many routes as Jerzu.

Main sectors. Aspect and season tags come from climbingitaly's sector pages; route counts are given from both climbingitaly and theCrag:

Who it suits. Climbing Ulassai says most routes are 6s and 7s, making it "a great destination for the average climber", with dozens of 5s and routes up to 9a too, and most crags mix grades so a group of different abilities can climb at the same wall. Climb Europe's book page puts the bulk of routes at F6a–F7c+.

When to go

SourceWhat it says
Climbing UlassaiPeak season is spring (March–May) and autumn (September to mid-November); at 775 m Ulassai is often several degrees cooler than other Sardinian areas, one of the best summer destinations on the island; winter is climbable, but rain can rule out climbing for days
Planetmountain (Oviglia)At about 800 m, spring and autumn are ideal, and in summer it's Sardinia's "coolest" area
UKC (2018)Most reliable weather April to October, best conditions in spring and autumn; most sectors face east and are in shade in the afternoon
Climb Europe guidebook pageMarch to December

In summer, pick the shady crags. climbingitaly says the coolest is Cave of Dreams, busy every day from June to October; Canyon Sa Tappara is in shade all day; Palazzo d'Inverno at Jerzu goes into shade in the afternoon. In winter, look for the "all year" or afternoon-sun crags: Su Casteddu, Il Castello, Isola del Tesoro. Climbing Ulassai warns that hot days can still reach the mid-thirties, while on cool days you'll want an extra layer for belaying.

Ulassai Festival. Planetmountain says the sixth edition ran from 30 May to 1 June 2026, organised by the Municipality of Ulassai, with climbing, highlining, hiking and mountain biking, and free registration. The village is busy that weekend, so book accommodation early.

Public transport

Climbing Ulassai says that if you're relying on public transport, fly to Cagliari: there's a train every 20 minutes from the airport to Cagliari bus station, then a bus of about 3 hours 15 minutes to Ulassai. The fastest two leave at 11:00 and 14:00; others take longer. This is the regional ARST line 103 (Cagliari–Muravera–Tertenia–Jerzu–Ulassai–Osini), and only a few runs a day stop at Ulassai, so check the timetable for your date before travelling (checked October 2026). UKC adds that Olbia and Alghero have bad connections to Ulassai and you'd need a hire car.

Once you're there, you can do without a car. UKC says over 500 routes are within walking distance of the village centre: "you can get away with not having a car". Climbing Ulassai says most crags are under 30 minutes' walk from town, and the village is about a kilometre end to end. For the Jerzu crags or the beach you'll want a car.

Driving

Climbing Ulassai gives the distances: Cagliari airport 115 km, Olbia 180 km, Alghero 220 km. Planetmountain says Jerzu is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Cagliari on the new SS125, almost 2 hours from Cala Gonone and about 45 minutes from Baunei; UKC says Ulassai to Baunei is about a 50-minute drive.

Parking

Climb Europe says the guidebook gives GPS coordinates and QR codes for each sector's parking. The sources I found give no general parking rules. UKC wrote in 2018 that free camping in campervans and tents "is tolerated", best at the Campo Sportivo, taking all your litter away; that's old information, so ask locally when you arrive.

Rules to know before you go

Talk to the local team before bolting. Climbing Ulassai says "Bolting in Ulassai is regulated": contact Nannai Climbing Home, Dirt Bags, Taccu Maccu or Bar paninoteca stazione curcuda before you start. UKC wrote in 2018 that "some rock is strictly off limits" and that only 316L stainless steel or titanium is allowed, because even a few kilometres from the sea the environment is marine.

Bolts and maintenance. Climbing Ulassai describes the bolting as "safe and well-thought", with crags maintained regularly by local climbers, and says it is working with the town hall to update the older routes, funded mostly by guidebook sales. Climb Europe also says the guidebook's profits go to bolting and rebolting at Ulassai, Jerzu and Osini. Buying the local guidebook pays for the upkeep.

New routes shed rock: wear a helmet. Climbing Ulassai says the chance of rockfall on new routes is high and recommends a helmet; grades on new routes can be a bit subjective too.

Rope and quickdraws. Climbing Ulassai says a 70 m rope does most routes, an 80 m rope is better at Su Casteddu, Bacilli and Scala Ussassa, and the guidebook flags routes longer than 35 m; bring at least 16 quickdraws.

The Marosini approach. theCrag's Marosini page says the approach has a couple of fixed ropes. In October 2026 a user raised a warning that the rope at the top of the rungs is "worn down to the core stranded. Needs to be replaced". That's a database user report, so ask at Nannai whether it has been replaced before you go.

Closures and bans. None of the sources I found list a climbing ban or closure notice for any sector.

Rescue and hospital. CNSAS Sardegna says that in Sardinia you call 112 and ask for the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Sardegna. UKC wrote in 2018 that there's a hospital in Jerzu, and the nearest A&E is about 30 minutes' drive away in Lanusei.

Finding partners. Climbing Ulassai says partners are easy to find except in winter: Nannai gets many solo climbers, and there's a local WhatsApp climbing group. The Dirt Bags climbing shop in the village sells chalk, ropes and hardware and rents gear.

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Routes and lengths come from climbingitaly's sector route tables (checked October 2026). "UKC pick" means one of the "crown jewels" listed in UKC's 2018 article; "UKC popular" means UKC Logbook's most popular climbs. Where climbingitaly and UKC disagree, both grades are given.
