Domusnovas and Masua: Ondra's 9a+ at the Cave Mouth and Sea-Cliff Multi-Pitch in Southwest Sardinia | Italy Climbing Crags

Oct 19, 20261 min
TL;DRTwo venues in the Iglesiente in southwest Sardinia. Domusnovas is 25 single-pitch sport sectors around the Grotta di San Giovanni, an 850 m natural tunnel; the 2019 guidebook lists 34 crags and more than 650 routes, and Bronx at the north entrance has Italy's first 9a+/9b, first climbed by Adam Ondra in 2008. On the coast, Masua has the single-pitch Castello dell'Iride and multi-pitch facing the Pan di Zucchero sea stack. What changes trips most is the bolts: most of Masua's sea-cliff multi-pitches use 304 stainless that can snap, so stick to the few that have been rebolted. Winter suits both; Castello dell'Iride is too hot in summer.

Domusnovas is a small town in the Iglesiente region of southwest Sardinia, about 15 minutes by ARST bus from Iglesias. The local association Climbing Sardinia's Domusnovas area page calls it one of the largest climbing areas on the island, saying of the tall limestone walls you see from the main road, "be sure they are all bolted". italia.it says that from Domusnovas and Iglesias it takes "only 30 minutes or less" to reach the rocks above the sea, meaning Masua: the single-pitch Castello dell'Iride and the sea-cliff multi-pitch facing the Pan di Zucchero stack.

This post helps you decide which level each venue suits, which months to go, how to get there while the Iglesias railway is closed, and which Masua multi-pitches have bolts you shouldn't trust right now. For other Sardinian crags see Cala Gonone and Isili; for a comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview.

What kind of crag is it

Domusnovas

Single-pitch sport around a natural tunnel. climbingitaly says most sectors are around the Grotta di San Giovanni, a natural tunnel cut by a river through the limestone. The regional trail site Sardegna Sentieri gives the main passage as 850 m long (climbingitaly says 800 m), opening at its north end onto the Oridda valley. By the south entrance is Arrampicantro, one of the easiest sectors; park by the church and seven more sectors are within a 30-minute walk. At the north entrance are Bronx and Tana delle Tigri, "two of the hardest crags in Sardinia", with 15 sectors in all on the north side.

Scale. climbingitaly lists 25 sectors. Planetmountain's 2019 piece on the new guidebook, written by Maurizio Oviglia, says: "More than 650 single pitch sport climbs and multi-pitches in 34 crags, enclosed in only 5 square kilometers", from 4a slabs to a 9a+/9b overhang.

History. The same article says "Sport climbing in Sardinia was probably born in Domusnovas", with the first bolts placed by Mondo Liggi. climbingitaly says Ruota del Tempo is one of the oldest sectors, bolted by Oviglia and Conca in 1987, and the big wall of Chinatown followed two years later. In 2008 Adam Ondra made the first ascent of Marina Superstar at Bronx by the north entrance; Climbing Sardinia's list of Sardinia's hardest routes gives it 9a+/9b, and Planetmountain says it was the first time the grade had been proposed in Italy.

Very little multi-pitch. climbingitaly says there are only a few routes at Chinatown and 3 easy ones on Monte Acqua to the right of the south entrance, all south-facing and unclimbable in summer.

Masua and the Iglesiente sea cliffs

Single-pitch at Castello dell'Iride. Planetmountain's crag page calls it the biggest limestone crag in the Iglesiente: 60 routes, 5c–8a, pocketed white limestone facing southeast, technical and sustained, with many newer routes needing a 70 m rope. climbingitaly says it was probably the first crag bolted in the Iglesiente, in 1984. To its left are Zoolook, restored in 2023, and the new sector Pandora (about 15 pitches of 5a–7b up to 40 m, bolted by Oviglia).

Sea-cliff multi-pitch. climbingitaly's Iglesiente area page says the high cliffs at Masua facing the Pan di Zucchero stack have more than 100 routes, 25 of them multi-pitch. Further north are the Pranu Sartu sea cliff and the Gutturu Cardaxiu canyon. UKC's Sardinia multi-pitch article lists the Iglesiente (Masua, Gutturu Pala, Pranu Sartu) as one of the island's three main multi-pitch areas.

Who it suits. Domusnovas runs from 5a to 9a+, so every level finds a sector. Masua's sea-cliff multi-pitches aren't hard (mostly 6a–6c in the tables below), but the bolt situation means they suit only climbers who can judge anchors and place trad gear if needed.

When to go

PlaceSourceWhat it says
Domusnovas south-facing sectorsclimbingitalyChinatown, Rifondazione Strapiombista, Arrampicantro and Cartoonia are perfect in winter; on a sunny day a T-shirt is enough
Domusnovas shady sectorsclimbingitalyIn summer go to Ultima Catastrofe, Pollo Positivo (shade in the afternoon), Animal House, Technicolor, and the hardest, Tana delle Tigri and Bronx
Castello dell'IridePlanetmountainFaces SE; sun until 15:00 in winter, shade from about 16:00 in summer
Castello dell'Irideclimbingitaly"Do not attempt climbing Castello dell'Iride in the summer"; even in shade after 4 pm, the rock gives off heat
Iglesiente in summerclimbingitalyThe Gutturu Cardaxiu canyon (Istentales gets shade early in the afternoon)
Masua as a wholePlanetmountain (Oviglia, 2023)"a very popular area for winter climbing"

Bottom line: go to both in winter, and in summer only to Domusnovas's shady sectors. Bronx, Canneland and Tana delle Tigri at Domusnovas are in shade all day, and climbingitaly tags them "all year".

Getting there

MiddleThe Iglesias railway is closed: take the ARST replacement bus or line 801 to IglesiasSS130 towards Iglesias
Last legFrom Iglesias, line 809 to Domusnovas or line 808 to MasuaDomusnovas: north of town along the San Giovanni river to the south entrance; Masua: SP83 through Nebida down to the beach

Public transport

The railway is closed. A June 2025 notice from the Regione Sardegna says that from 1 July 2025 the Decimomannu–Iglesias and Decimomannu–Carbonia lines are suspended for works due to finish by 31 December 2026. ARST replacement buses run in the meantime, stopping at Villamassargia and Siliqua and going straight to Decimomannu station for trains to Cagliari. The notice doesn't list Domusnovas station. As of October 2026 the works period was still running, so check ARST or Trenitalia before you travel. The other option is ARST's line 801 bus (Calasetta–Carbonia–Iglesias–Cagliari).

Changing at Iglesias (checked October 2026):

  • ARST line 809: Iglesias Stazione FS to Domusnovas in about 15 minutes, for example 08:03 arriving at Piazza Leccis at 08:17.
  • Line 808: Masua–Nebida–Iglesias, about 9 runs a day, for example 06:49 from Masua reaching Iglesias station at 07:23.

The last leg is on foot or by car. The sources I found show no bus to the Grotta di San Giovanni and don't say how far it is to walk from town to the south entrance; at Masua the bus stops in the village, a walk from the mining park car park.

Driving

Planetmountain's route page for Non spezzarmi il cuore gives the way to Masua: from Cagliari take the SS130 towards Iglesias, then continue towards Gonnesa and Carbonia. At Stazione Monteponi turn right onto the SP83 towards Nebida and Buggerru, follow the panoramic coast road past Nebida, descend to the big Portu Cauli car park at Masua beach, then turn right following the Porto Flavia mine signs along a dirt road to the mining park car park.

To the Domusnovas cave, Sardegna Sentieri says to head north out of town on the provincial road along the San Giovanni river to the south entrance. You can no longer drive through the cave (see the rules below). To reach Bronx and Tana delle Tigri at the north entrance, climbingitaly says you can either walk through the cave or drive around the mountain following signs for the Marganai forest.

Parking

  • Domusnovas, south entrance: climbingitaly says to park by the church, where paths lead to seven sectors, the furthest 30 minutes away.
  • Castello dell'Iride: Planetmountain says to drive the dirt track from Masua beach to its end, "do not park the car close to the Porto Flavia mine or the entry gate", then take the yellow-marked path to the right of the mine entrance, under 10 minutes to the crag.
  • Masua sea-cliff multi-pitch: park at the Porto Flavia mining park car park, enter the park and turn up the small path on the right before the mine entrance (Planetmountain).

Rules to know before you go

Masua sea-cliff multi-pitch: most bolts are at risk of failing. This is the most important point in the post. In a Planetmountain article at the end of 2022, Oviglia writes that most routes on the Masua sea cliffs were bolted with 304 stainless steel that looks fine but carries a high risk of failure. When he rebolted Non spezzarmi il cuore, one anchor on the top belay had already snapped and climbers had been abseiling off a rope tied round a juniper; two more bolts broke with a single hammer blow during the rebolt. His status list at the end:

  • Rebolted (316 stainless): Megaminimondo, Hard o Soft?, Non spezzarmi il cuore
  • Recent routes: Acciughe e Bottarga, Abbi Dubbi, Leonello
  • Relatively safe: Italia Liberata, Le Grand Mammuth, Dolci Sardi
  • "Climbs at risk of bolt failure: All others"

climbingitaly's Iglesiente page also says the bolted sea-cliff multi-pitches "all … have serious oxidation problems": check whether and when a route was rebolted, avoid anything visibly rusty, and "Climbing with friends and nuts may be a wiser choice".

The state of the southwest coast crags. Oviglia's December 2024 round-up on Planetmountain (coast only, not Domusnovas):

CragStatus
Castello dell'IrideMany routes rebolted, "Overall quite safe"; watch the 304 bolts (usually glue-ins) and old belays rather than the rusty bolts
Zoolook, PandoraFully restored in 2023, 316 stainless
Wild Ca Dapria304 steel; rebolting announced several times but not done; "I do not recommend climbing here"
Torrioni di MasuaSome routes rebolted
Cuenca del Cabron (Buggerru)304 glue-ins that have failed before; "Climbing here is not recommended"
Gutturu Cardaxius, IstentalesOld gear but can be considered safe, belays re-equipped; not recommended in winter

Castello dell'Iride's single pitches are being rebolted too. Planetmountain reported in November 2024 that Gianluca Piras was crowdfunding to rebolt about fifteen problem single pitches with titanium or 316L, because 304 steel in a marine setting suffers corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.

Masua is inside a mining area, where climbing is "tolerated". Oviglia wrote in 2023 that the Masua crags are inside the Masua mine, just above the Porto Flavia mine, now a tourist site: "at present climbing is tolerated, but please follow the marked paths and respect the environment". Castello dell'Iride also has a precedent: Planetmountain reported in October 2005 that the town council had banned climbing there because of rockfall, and the local association A Ca' da Pria in Nebida was negotiating with Iglesias council to have it lifted. People climb there again now and rebolting continues, but I found no text of a revocation (second-hand: Planetmountain 2005 report, original order not found), so check locally before you go.

The Grotta di San Giovanni is a natural monument closed to traffic. Sardegna Sentieri says the cave is a protected natural monument under regional law and "Now closed to traffic"; it used to be the only cave in Italy you could drive through. The sources I found say nothing about climbing restrictions on the crags at its entrances.

The Masua approach skirts a landslide area. Planetmountain's Non spezzarmi il cuore page says the path follows the edge of a landslide area, and the descent to the foot of the wall is "not suitable for children".

Bolts at Domusnovas. Planetmountain's 2019 guidebook piece says the crags "need to re-bolted, restored and relaunched", with local bolters asking for support. Most climbingitaly sector pages give bolting years, and many routes date from the 1990s; for those with no rebolt listed, check the newest guidebook before you go.

Rescue. CNSAS Sardegna says that in Sardinia you call 112 and ask for the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Sardegna; on a sea cliff, say so and give how long the walk from the car was.

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Single pitches come from climbingitaly's sector route tables (checked October 2026), a single source; Masua multi-pitches are limited to those Oviglia listed in 2022 as rebolted, recent or relatively safe.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

Arrampicantro at the Domusnovas south entrance and Ultima Catastrofe and Pollo Positivo on the north side have a row of 5s; Masua's easiest multi-pitch, Acciughe & Bottarga, sits around this grade too.
