Val d'Ossola and Cadarese: Europe-Famous Granite Cracks, Sport Crags and Forest Bouldering | Italy Climbing Crags

Oct 19, 20261 min
TL;DRVal d'Ossola, at the northern tip of Piedmont and wedged between the Swiss Valais and Ticino, has more than 30 crags on 8a.nu. The most famous is Cadarese in Valle Antigorio: smooth granite packed with cracks, some sectors bolted only at the belays (bring two sets of cams) and others fully bolted. Croveo and the other sport crags are mostly 6a to 7a, and the forest at Foppiano di Crodo holds a thousand-odd gneiss boulder problems. Cadarese is best in spring and autumn, Foppiano from April to October. Every year the Val Grande park closes the walls around Colloro from February to the end of July for nesting peregrines.

Val d'Ossola sits at the northern tip of Piedmont, a wedge between the Swiss Valais and Ticino that stretches from Lago Maggiore to the Simplon Pass, with Domodossola as its main town. Swiss climbing magazine lacrux counts hundreds of developed routes, sport, trad and alpine, and says "the spectacular crack climbs should be mentioned here in particular".

This guide covers what you need to decide before you go: where to head for crack climbing, sport climbing and bouldering, which months to go, how to get there without a car, and which walls close every spring. For a comparison of seasons and regions across Italy, see the series overview; for Italy's other great crack-climbing valley, see Valle dell'Orco.

What kind of crag is it

A whole valley of crags in three main styles. 8a.nu's Val d'Ossola area lists 32 crags. The most-logged ones (checked 2026-10-19):

CragStyleRoutes on 8a.nuLogged ascents
CadareseGranite cracks (trad plus some bolted)1573,386

CroveoSingle-pitch sport2132,785
EsigoSingle-pitch sport1241,827
Ponte RomanoSingle-pitch sport871,254
PremiaSingle-pitch sport2161,195

lacrux says most routes fall between 6a and 7a and that the walls are spread evenly through the area, so climbers rarely get in each other's way.

Cadarese: granite cracks

The Planetmountain crag page (by Maurizio Oviglia) calls Cadarese "one of the most famous crack climbing areas in Italy and throughout Europe". The smooth granite has an extraordinary density of cracks, and climbing courses come from Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria. The crag has three tiers. After years of bitter controversy between those who wanted to bolt it and those who wanted to leave the cracks untouched, a compromise was reached: some sectors are bolted and others are completely clean, ideal for trad.

The most popular and accessible trad sector is Crack Party: only the belays are bolted, you place all the gear yourself, and Planetmountain highly recommends a double set of cams. Tribe, beside the approach path, was first climbed by Jacopo Larcher in 2019 with no fixed gear at all (Planetmountain interview); Planetmountain calls it one of the most difficult trad climbs in the world.

Sport climbing: Croveo and the other crags

Croveo, Premia, Esigo, Ponte Romano and others are bolted single-pitch crags; Croveo's most popular routes on 8a.nu run from 6a to 7a+ (see the route tables below).

Foppiano di Crodo: forest bouldering

The local group Ossola Boulder calls Foppiano the place "dove tutto è iniziato" (where it all began) for Ossola bouldering, now 22 sectors and 362 boulders. thetopo (27crags) describes a beech and spruce forest at about 1,217 m at the foot of Monte Cistella, with 1,064 problems in 22 sectors. The grey gneiss is full of crimps and cracks. The boulders are not moraine blocks but sharp-edged pieces of bedrock broken up by an ancient, very slow deep-seated slope deformation. There are low "Sassi Kids" boulders for children as well as hard classics up to about 8B+ (Disincanto). VisitOssola dates the start of development to 2009.

Mind the name. thetopo warns that the bouldering is at Foppiano di Crodo above Crodo, not the village of the same name in Val Formazza.

Who it suits. Climbers who want to learn or improve crack climbing (Crack Party has many teaching routes from 6a to 6c); climbers looking for lots of 6a to 7a sport routes; boulderers.

Public transport

lacrux describes Domodossola as the geographic and transport hub of the valley. Autoservizi Comazzi runs the bus from Domodossola to Cascata del Toce (the waterfall in Val Formazza); in 2026 the summer timetable runs from 11 June to 13 September, and the same page carries the current version for other seasons. For Foppiano di Crodo, thetopo and VisitOssola give only driving directions.

Driving

thetopo's Foppiano access page: from Milan take the A8 towards Varese, follow signs for Gravellona Toce, then the Simplon expressway (SS33) to the Crodo exit; from Turin take the A4 towards Milan and the A26 link to Gravellona Toce. From Brig in Switzerland you can cross the Simplon Pass or take the Brig–Iselle car-loading train.

Parking

  • Cadarese: Planetmountain says to enter Valle Antigorio towards Terme di Premia and park just before the spa, on the right next to the bridge facing the crag. Cross the river, walk down the road and follow the path across the meadow, scramble steeply past Tribe to the second tier, then follow the ledge right to Crack Party, about 20 minutes from the car.
  • Foppiano di Crodo: thetopo says to turn left off the SS659 after about 8 km for Mozzio–Viceno–Foppiano, then after 7 km turn left at the Viceno church for the final climb (campervans should take the Baceno route instead). There are three parking areas: a gravel pull-out left of the restaurant, the picnic area (the only one where campervans may park, with water, toilets and grills), and a quiet clearing with about 20 spaces and no water further along a dirt road.

Rules to know before you go

Val Grande park peregrine closures. A Parco Nazionale Val Grande notice (republished on parks.it) says a probable peregrine nest was spotted "anche quest'anno" (again this year) on the Sasso Bianco walls at Premosello Chiovenda, and the park banned climbing and access to the area "fino al 31 luglio 2026" (until 31 July 2026). Prealpina reported that the park's decision covers the Colloro crag and the bolted walls above Premosello Chiovenda and Vogogna, with fines for offenders. The same measure was taken in 2023 (Ossolanews), so if you plan to climb there between February and the end of July, check the park's notices first. As of October 2026 this year's closure has expired.

Cadarese's bolted and clean sectors. The split between bolted and unbolted sectors is a hard-won compromise (Planetmountain), so do not add bolts in the trad sectors. Crack Party starts from an exposed ledge, and Planetmountain warns "This sector is NOT suited for children".

Trad rack. Planetmountain recommends two sets of cams; some routes need bigger sizes (Larga ma facile needs BD 5 and 6).

Foppiano rules. thetopo lists them: wild camping is in principle forbidden in Piedmont, but the rule does not apply to stays under 48 hours; no fires in the forest or meadows, only the grills in the picnic area; no cars on the flat meadow of the picnic area; respect private land and do not cross the big meadow when the grass is tall; brush off chalk; and when the rock is wet after rain, holds break much more easily.

Rescue. Call 112, say it is a mountain accident and ask for the Soccorso Alpino (CNSAS).

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Cadarese's crack routes use French grades, but many are trad (bolted only at the belays), marked "trad" in the notes. Routes come from Planetmountain's Crack Party list, 8a.nu's Cadarese list and Croveo list; boulder problems come from 8a.nu's Foppiano list.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

Crack Party's short cracks are good for placing gear for the first time; Croveo has a few grade 5 sport routes.
