Monte Bracco, also called Mombracco locally, is a mountain in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, at the mouth of Valle Po; Sanfront, the town at its foot, is 18 km up the valley from Saluzzo. Its south and east faces are covered in gneiss walls, and the woods above them are scattered with boulders.
This guide covers what you need to decide before you go: whether it suits your level, which months to go, how to get there without a car, and where to head for sport climbing or bouldering. For a comparison of seasons and regions across Italy, see the series overview.
What kind of crag is it
Single-pitch gneiss sport climbing, densest at beginner and intermediate grades. Planetmountain calls it "the biggest concentration of routes with technical grades from 4a to 7c+". The gneiss gives a wide range of styles, from slabs with small edges to vertical and overhanging walls, pockets and ledges; the most beautiful wall is the golden-tinted Falesia delle Ninfe. A 70 m rope is recommended.
Bouldering. The same page says the Bracco Vecchio bouldering area sits in an old forest just above the crag, with "11 boulders and 90+ problems". MadBoulder puts the whole of Mombracco at about 200 problems on gneiss with quartzite inserts, demanding precise finger strength, topping out at 8B, with Christian Core among those who developed it.
Size. The sites cover different areas, so the figures are not directly comparable (checked 2026-10-19):
| Source | Coverage | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Planetmountain | The walls on the Sanfront side | 500+ routes, 4a–7c+ |
| Valli del Monviso | Three sectors on the south side (Cumbal Reinaud, Settore Centrale, Combale Tofu) | about 350 routes |
| theCrag | The whole mountain (Sanfront, Barge, Envie, Revello, Rifreddo) | 1,633 routes, 637 of them at Sanfront |
| 8a.nu | Monte Bracco sport / bouldering | sport 143 routes, 457 logged ascents; bouldering 219 problems, 1,478 logged ascents |
| theCrag: Bracco Vecchio | The bouldering area | 86 problems on 15 numbered boulders |
Who it suits. Beginner and intermediate climbers looking for plenty of grade 5 and grade 6 sport routes on one mountain; boulderers will find most problems between 6A and 7C.
When to go
| Source | Season |
|---|---|
| Planetmountain | The walls face south and east, climbable "all year round except for the hottest months" |
| Valli del Monviso | South side best September to June; the northwest side (towards Barge) gets little sun and is best March to October |
| MadBoulder | The boulders sit at about 600 m with a favourable microclimate, best in autumn and winter |
The south side is too hot in high summer; in summer, try the northwest side or crags higher up Valle Po.
Getting there
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Saluzzo bus station (from Turin on the Grandabus Torino–Saluzzo line) | Saluzzo |
| Middle | Bus 104 Saluzzo–Paesana to Sanfront, about 20–25 minutes | 18 km up Valle Po to Sanfront |
| Last stretch | Walk up from Sanfront to Frazione Mombracco | Mombracco car park, then about 30 minutes on foot |
Public transport
The Unione Montana dei Comuni del Monviso lists two Grandabus lines into the valley, Torino–Saluzzo and Saluzzo–Paesana. Saluzzo–Paesana is line 104, and its timetable is marked "IN VIGORE DAL 28 SETTEMBRE 2026": as an example, a weekday bus leaves Saluzzo Autostazione at 7:50 and reaches Sanfront at 8:15. There are twenty-odd runs on weekdays, some of them on school days only; Sundays and holidays have just a few. The stop in Sanfront is still an uphill walk from the crag car park, and the same page lists a hire-car service (NCC) based in Sanfront.
Driving
Planetmountain: drive 18 km up Valle Po from Saluzzo to Sanfront, take the Paesana direction at the roundabout, then turn right following signs for "Frazione Mombracco" and climb a few hairpins for about 1.5 km to the large car park.
Parking
From the large car park at Mombracco, walk on along the tarmac to Rifugio Miravidi, where a path branches right into the chestnut forest and reaches the crag in about 30 minutes (Planetmountain); theCrag gives 30–45 minutes. MadBoulder says boulderers also park before the climb up to Miravidi. Rifugio Miravidi is a hut and trattoria at the start of the path.
Rules to know before you go
No closures found. As of October 2026 there is no closure or climbing ban on record for the Monte Bracco crags. The only closure found on the mountain is a footpath: La Guida reported in January 2025 that Sanfront's town council closed a stretch of path from Rua' Battero towards Rifugio Mulatero (near Combale Reynaud) after a landslide, until it is made safe again. That is not the crag approach Planetmountain describes, but check signs on site before using other paths.
Private land. MadBoulder asks visitors to keep "respecting the natural and private property". No local organisation or town document defines the boundaries, so follow the signs when parking and walking and do not cut across farmland.
Bolts and gear. The sport routes are bolted and Planetmountain recommends a 70 m rope. No recent rebolting notices were found, so judge the bolts on older routes yourself.
Rescue. Call 112, say it is a mountain accident and ask for the Soccorso Alpino (CNSAS).
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Sport routes come from Planetmountain's Falesia delle Ninfe route table and the 8a.nu Monte Bracco sport list (sorted by logged ascents); boulder problems come from the 8a.nu bouldering list and the thetopo (27crags) Bracco Vecchio list.

Bouldering
Bracco Vecchio is the historic bouldering area; 8a.nu also lists problems in a "Nuovo" sector (such as Tai Chi). The hardest problems MadBoulder lists are two 8Bs (Double crossed fists, Over The Rainbow); they are left out of the table because a video site is the only source.
