Valle Gesso is in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont, a valley running from Borgo San Dalmazzo deep into the Maritime Alps (Alpi Marittime). Higher up it splits in two: the Vallone di San Giacomo towards Entracque, and the branch towards Valdieri that leads to Sant'Anna di Valdieri and Terme di Valdieri. Both are full of boulders, and MadBoulder calls it "a premier alpine bouldering destination in Italy".
This post helps you decide which months to go, whether you can get there without a car, which area to pick, and what rules apply in the protected area. For a season comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview; for alpine bouldering further north in Lombardy, see Val di Mello.
What kind of crag is it
Sources disagree on the rock. Outdoor shop Oliunid's write-up says "The rock is highly featured gneiss", making the climbing both athletic and technical (Oliunid); MadBoulder says granite. Boulders range from very steep to taller, more vertical blocks, with problems for every level.
History. Oliunid writes that bouldering here began in the 1990s with veteran mountaineer Angelo Siri, followed by the guidebook authors Marco Torielli, Paolo Bertolotto and Giova Massari and other locals; Christian Core and Stella Marchisio, visiting from nearby Liguria, cleaned and first climbed very hard lines that still have few repeats.
Areas.
- Vallone di San Giacomo (above Entracque, about 1,250 m): the main area covered by the guidebook. Oliunid says Isengard is one of the most popular sectors, a few boulders on a grassy plateau with every grade and mostly good landings; La Madonnina and Bellerofonte have fewer boulders but beautiful steep walls, favourites of Cuneo's strongest climbers.
- Sant'Anna di Valdieri and Pian della Casa (on the road from Valdieri to Terme di Valdieri): 27crags lists over a hundred problems at each.
Oliunid warns that the areas are far apart and you drive between them, so pick one per day; boulders are often hidden by trees and hard to find, so ask locals about parking and paths first.
Scale. Sources count differently (checked 2026-10-19):
| Source | Number | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 27crags | 216 + 26 + 10 problems | San Giacomo: Isengard area, Settore basso, Madonnina |
| 27crags | 147 + 142 problems | Sant'Anna, Pian della Casa |
| 8a.nu | 401 problems, 720 ascents | San Giacomo di Entracque – Basso & Giardino Zen |
| Guidebook blurb (Baita Monte Gelas) | Over 500 lines, 5a to 8a | Vallone di San Giacomo |
| MadBoulder | Over 100 in the lower area | Plus a higher upper area |
Who it suits. There is everything from Font 5 to 8A+, with the most choice between 6A and 7B. It suits boulderers who want several days in a cool alpine setting and do not mind searching for boulders and walking a bit.
When to go
| Source | Season |
|---|---|
| Oliunid | "in spring and autumn" |
| MadBoulder | Autumn is best, with cool friction and stable weather; summer is possible, but alpine weather changes quickly |
Slow to dry. Oliunid says that depending on aspect the rock can take several days to dry after rain. In early summer the trees give shade but also hide the boulders.
Winter. None of the sources lists winter as a season. Note also that the sport crag of Andonno, in the same valley and on the road up, has been closed in full by Valdieri town council ordinance no. 55 from 1 October 2026 until works are finished (secondary source: TargatoCN, 2026-10-01; the ordinance itself was not found).
Getting there
Public transport
Take the train to Cuneo, then a Benese bus (the two lines listed on the Maritime Alps park site, Parco Alpi Marittime). Using 2026 as the example:
| Line | Period | Service |
|---|---|---|
| 77 Cuneo–Valdieri–Entracque | All year (some runs summer or school days only) | Cuneo station to Entracque about 30–40 minutes; no bus on to San Giacomo |
| 82 Cuneo–Sant'Anna–Terme di Valdieri | 15 June–5 September 2026, Monday to Saturday | 8:10 from Cuneo (Corso Nizza 4), Sant'Anna 8:55; extra 14:30 run in July and August; returns 12:05 and 18:05 from Terme |
San Giacomo needs the shuttle. Where the buses do not go, there is the park's bookable summer shuttle, the "Navetta del Parco": in 2026 from 14 June to 14 September, on 351 8969729 or 334 8590124 or online, booked at least 36/24 hours ahead; it is a four-seat car and runs only with at least two paying passengers (La Guida, 2026-07-04).
Outside summer there is no public transport to the bouldering areas; you need a car.
Driving
From Cuneo through Borgo San Dalmazzo and Andonno to Valdieri. For Sant'Anna and Pian della Casa, 27crags says to take the SP239 at the roundabout shortly after Valdieri towards Sant'Anna di Valdieri and Terme di Valdieri. For San Giacomo, go to Entracque and continue up the valley towards San Giacomo (Oliunid).
Parking
27crags says the parking for San Giacomo's Settore basso is 500 m after two narrow hairpins, with a way down to the boulders on the left of the road; Isengard is about 20 minutes' walk from its parking and the lowest part of Vanilla Sky about 15 minutes. The park's climbing rules ask you not to park on meadows (see below).
Rules to know before you go
Maritime Alps protected areas. MadBoulder says the Valle Gesso bouldering lies in the Maritime Alps Nature Park (Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime) and climbers must respect its conservation rules. The managing body, Aree Protette Alpi Marittime, lists what climbers must do on its "Arrampicata sostenibile" page (Aree Protette Alpi Marittime):
- Check before you go that your sector has no temporary or permanent access ban (to protect nests, dens or threatened species).
- Opening new routes or securing existing ones always needs authorisation; in protected areas and Natura 2000 sites the fine is €1,152 under Regional Law 19/2009.
- Don't park on meadows, and don't cut corners on approach paths.
- Clean only the holds, gently, with a soft brush, and leave moss and lichen; use as little chalk as possible and brush off tick marks when you finish.
- Carry all rubbish down, including cigarette ends and biodegradable waste.
The page also notes that Natura 2000 sites have no continuous boundary markers on the ground; check the EU portal.
Access to individual sectors. Oliunid wrote in February 2021 that the Sangia Gnus sector was temporarily off limits because the footbridge mentioned in the guidebook was missing; check the local site Cuneoclimbing for current status. No other closure notices for bouldering sectors were found in October 2026.
Rescue. For a mountain accident call 118 or the European emergency number 112 and ask for the national mountain rescue, CNSAS; the call is free in Italy (CNSAS).
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
This is a bouldering-only area. The four levels keep the series headings and hold problems of similar Font grade: beginner up to 6A, intermediate 6A+ to 6C+, advanced 7A to 7C+, expert 8A and up. Problems and ascent counts come mainly from 27crags' San Giacomo, Settore basso and Pian della Casa lists and MadBoulder videos (checked October 2026); logged ascents are very few, so treat them as pointers and go with the guidebook.

Where to look things up
- Guidebooks: Grades and route counts here come mainly from online databases; the guidebook is the authority.
- Bouldering in Valle Gesso (Paolo Bertolotto, Giovanni Massari, Marco Torielli, Blu Edizioni, 2015, Italian with legend in English and German, 108 pages, plus the Vertical-Life app): boulders of the Vallone di San Giacomo, over 500 lines from 5a to 8a (blurb quoted by Baita Monte Gelas). This is the 2015 edition and no newer one was found; Sant'Anna and Pian della Casa are not covered, so use 27crags for those.
- 27crags: problem lists, topos and parking for San Giacomo, Sant'Anna and Pian della Casa, mostly paid.
- Cuneoclimbing: the local climbing portal for the Cuneo area (since 2006), with news and access updates.
- Aree Protette Alpi Marittime: the park's climbing rules and where to check bans.
- Benese bus timetables, Navetta del Parco: the current year's buses and bookable shuttle.
- MadBoulder: Valle Gesso: problem videos.
