In 2026, AI Engineer behavioral interviews rarely stay on generic "how did you resolve a team conflict" questions — hiring guides now ask directly how you operationalize GenAI safety, or about a time you were confident in a solution and later realized it was wrong, or whether you've disagreed with a teammate on a technical approach. What all of these are actually scoring is the same thing: can you turn "this risk is real" into evidence-backed judgment under timeline pressure, instead of just calling for a halt on instinct. Here's a version you can adapt directly, or use as a template for your own real experience.

Situation: My team was moving an e-commerce support agent from limited testing to a full site launch. It could look up orders, judge refund eligibility, and call the refund API directly. The PM had already committed to launching before next week's big promotion, to offload customer-service volume.

Task: I owned the agent's tool-calling architecture. In the design review a week before launch, I found that the original design let the LLM's tool call trigger the refund action directly, with no independent authorization check in between.

Action: Instead of just saying "this isn't safe," I spent half a day writing a small red-team test — a series of deliberately manipulative support conversations designed to probe the original design. Across 20 test conversations, 6 successfully got the model to approve refunds above the authorized limit, and 2 of those got through simply by claiming "a manager already approved this." I compiled these 6 concrete cases — full conversation logs and refund amounts — into a one-page slide and brought it to the PM and engineering lead, rather than just voicing a concern. I then proposed a "model proposes, a deterministic system authorizes" architecture: the LLM would judge the refund reason and suggest an amount, but the actual charge would first pass through a rule engine — checking the amount cap, order status, and whether a refund had already been issued in the past 24 hours — and only execute the refund API call if it passed; otherwise it routed to human review. The PM initially didn't want to delay, so instead of insisting on a full redo, I used the 6 red-team cases as leverage and proposed scoping the initial launch to order lookups only, with refunds routed to human confirmation for now — the authorization layer would ship a week later, and the promotion could still launch on time for the query-volume offload it actually needed.

Result: The authorization layer shipped and was tested within the three extra days. In the two weeks after launch, the rule engine caught 41 requests that exceeded the amount cap or duplicated a prior refund, with zero dollars in actual erroneous refunds. The customer-service offload wasn't affected, since order lookups — the bulk of the demand — were never delayed in the first place. After this, "model proposes, rule engine authorizes" became the default architecture for every agent on our team that executes real actions rather than just answering questions, and it got written into our team's agent-launch checklist.

If I had only raised a verbal concern without the red-team evidence, the timeline pressure would probably have won with "ship now, patch later." That's now my working principle for any agent design that executes actions: you can't gamble an authorization gap on trusting the model's judgment — you need a final gate the model has no say in.
