The "interview" scenario in my English speaking practice area only had two sentences. This post adds ten, covering the four things interviews ask about most.
One thing first: a few of these sentences used to carry example values that only showed the pattern. They now carry my own real content, with company and product names removed. When you practice, replace them with your own experience, or the sentences will not help in an actual interview.
What I was trying to say
I was talking to an interviewer, formally but not stiffly. I was doing four things:
- Introducing myself: which fields I have experience in, what kind of company I work for now
- Describing a project: what I owned, what the result was, what was hardest
- Describing a failure or a disagreement: what I misjudged, how it was resolved, what I changed
- Asking the interviewer: how the team splits the work, what the role's early goals are
What you can say in this situation
Every sentence below is adapted from a dictionary pattern. None of them is a dictionary example.
1. Introducing yourself
| What I want to say | What works in this situation |
|---|---|
| 我在 RAG 管線、context engineering 和 agent 記憶系統方面有經驗。 | I have experience in RAG pipelines, context engineering, and agent memory systems. |
| 我目前在一家做 AI agent 平台的公司工作。 | I currently work for a company that builds an AI agent platform. |
experience: Oxford lists three patterns, each with an example (experience):
- experience in + a field: He gained extensive experience in the field of artificial intelligence
- experience as + a role: I have over ten years' experience as a teacher
- experience of + a thing: Do you have any previous experience of this type of work?
So a field takes in RAG pipelines and a job title takes as a backend engineer. To give the number of years, the dictionary has both ten years' experience and years of experience. I am not sure how many years I should claim, so this sentence leaves the number out.
work for: Oxford's entry for work has She works for an engineering company (work). Currently means "at the present time", as in All the options are currently available (currently). To describe what the company does, I use build, and the dictionary example is We build computer systems for large companies (build).
2. Describing a project
| What I want to say | What works in this situation |
|---|---|
| 我負責設計並實作 agent 的記憶功能。 | I was responsible for designing and building the agent's memory feature. |
| 我們把附件上限從 100 MB 降到 10 MB。 | We reduced the attachment limit from 100 MB to 10 MB. |
| 最難的部分是找出一個沒有任何錯誤訊息、也沒有 log 的 bug。 | The hardest part was finding a bug that produced no errors and no logs. |
responsible for + -ing: Oxford's example is Mike is responsible for designing the entire project (responsible). Design and build go together, as in He designed and built his own house (design).
I first wanted to say implement. Oxford marks it as formal and defines it as making something that has been decided start to happen, with implement changes/decisions/policies (implement). There is no example with a software feature, so the main sentence uses build, which has a direct dictionary example. Use building only for a feature you made from scratch. The product as a whole already existed, so when I talk about the product the verb is improving.
reduce … from A to B: Oxford's example is The number of employees was reduced from 40 to 25 (reduce). To give only the size of the drop, use by: Costs have been reduced by 20%.
The hardest part was + -ing: Oxford's entry for part has The worst part was having to wait three hours in the rain and I gave up once I got to the hard part (part). The main sentence follows this pattern and puts finding after was. The learner's dictionary does not list the software sense of log.
3. Describing a failure or a disagreement
| What I want to say | What works in this situation |
|---|---|
| 我當時低估了這件事的複雜度。 | I underestimated how complex it was. |
| 我和 PM 對檔案大小上限的看法不同,後來我們用正式環境的資料來決定。 | I disagreed with our PM about the file size limit, so we used production data to make the decision. |
| 從那次之後,我改旗標的語意之前,都會先檢查每一個寫入它的地方。 | Since then, I've always checked every place that writes a flag before I change its meaning. |
underestimate how…: Oxford lists underestimate what, how, etc., with We underestimated how long it would take (underestimate).
disagree with + person: Oxford's example is I must respectfully disagree with my colleague. The topic of the disagreement takes on: Victoria and I obviously disagree on this issue (disagree). The phrase is make a decision, as in Who made the decision to go ahead with the project? (decision).
Since then + present perfect: Oxford says since is used with the present perfect or past perfect for a period from a past time until now, as in That was years ago. I've changed jobs since then (since). So this sentence uses the present perfect, I've always checked.
4. Asking the interviewer
| What I want to say | What works in this situation |
|---|---|
| 團隊平常是怎麼分工的? | How does the team divide up the work? |
| 這個職位前三個月最重要的目標是什麼? | What are the most important goals for this role in the first three months? |
divide (up) the work: Oxford's examples are We divided the work between us and Profits were divided up among the staff (divide).
role, goal: Oxford defines role as the function or position that somebody has in an organization (role), and goal as something that you hope to achieve, noting that goals are often long-term (goal).
This group has support at the situation level. The job site The Muse collects questions to ask an interviewer, including What are the most important things you'd like to see someone accomplish in the first 30, 60, and 90 days on the job? and Can you tell me about the team I'll be working with? (51 Interview Questions You Should Be Asking). The Muse is a commercial job site, not a language textbook. It shows that people do recommend asking this kind of question in interviews. My two sentences are shorter adaptations.
Can I also say it this way?
| English | Who you say it to and when | Still the same meaning? |
|---|---|---|
| I have experience in RAG pipelines, context engineering, and agent memory systems. | Naming a field | Main version |
| I have experience as a backend engineer. | Naming a job title | Yes, the focus moves from field to role |
| I currently work for a company that builds an AI agent platform. | Describing your current job | Main version |
| I currently work at a company that builds an AI agent platform. | Same situation | Yes. Oxford says at is used to say where somebody works, as in He's been at the bank longer than anyone else (at) |
| I was responsible for designing and building the agent's memory feature. | Stressing that it was your responsibility | Main version |
| I designed and built the agent's memory feature. | Saying directly that you did it | Yes, and shorter |
| We reduced the attachment limit from 100 MB to 10 MB. | You have a before and an after number | Main version |
| We reduced the attachment limit by 90%. | You only give the size of the drop | Yes, but the information differs: no before and after numbers |
| I disagreed with our PM. | The focus is on who | Main version |
| Our PM and I disagreed on the limit. | The focus is on what | Yes, with the topic added |
| How does the team divide up the work? | Asking how work is split | Main version |
| Can you tell me about the team I'll be working with? | You want to know more about the team | Different: broader than just how work is split; quoted from The Muse |
Say it again with different content
Read the Chinese, say it yourself, then check the reference. The content of these sentences also comes from my own work.
- 我有把外部服務包成 agent 工具的經驗。
- I have experience in wrapping external services as agent tools.
- 我負責設計 trace 的時間軸。
- I was responsible for designing the trace timeline.
- 我們把附件上限降了九成。
- We reduced the attachment limit by 90%.
- 最難的部分是在沒有 log 的情況下找出原因。
- The hardest part was finding the cause without any logs.
- 我低估了這會花多久時間。
- I underestimated how long it would take.
- 從那次之後,我都會先查正式環境的資料。
- Since then, I've always checked the production data first.
A short dialogue
This is a practice example I wrote. It is not a real interview. The answers use the sentences above.
A: Could you tell me about a project you worked on?
B: Sure. I was responsible for designing and building the agent's memory feature.
A: What was the hardest part?
B: The hardest part was finding a bug that produced no errors and no logs. I underestimated how complex it was.
A: Have you made a mistake that changed how you work?
B: Yes, with a feature flag on another project. Since then, I've always checked every place that writes a flag before I change its meaning.
A: Could you give me another example of a change you made?
B: Sure. We reduced the attachment limit from 100 MB to 10 MB. May I ask a question? How does the team divide up the work?
Without looking at the English, how would you say it?
Rate yourself on whether you got the meaning across, not on matching the words exactly.

Still to verify
I have not found a suitable source for these, so they are not in the practice set:
- Whether implement a feature is normal in spoken English on software teams: the dictionary only has examples with policies and decisions
- The overall structure of an interview answer (for example situation first, then action and result): I only checked sentence patterns, not interview teaching material
- Which version is more common: that needs a corpus query, which I did not run
Overall
Of the ten, experience in / as, responsible for + -ing, and since then with the present perfect are worth practicing first, because every interview uses them. Almost all the sources are learner's dictionaries, which support meaning and sentence patterns. Only the questions for the interviewer have a situation-level example from a job site. There was no native-speaker testing and no frequency comparison, so this post only says "works in this situation". Five of the sentences carry my own real content, with company and product names removed. When you practice, replace them with your own experience.
Changelog
- 2026-10-08: Replaced five example-value sentences with my own real content (company and product names removed), and adjusted the explanations, the short dialogue, and the references to match
