Gran Sasso in Abruzzo is the highest massif in the Apennines (Corno Grande, 2,912 m), and its limestone offers two kinds of climbing: multi-pitch routes on Corno Piccolo and Corno Grande, from grade III historic ridges to grade VIII big walls, mostly on your own gear; and summer bouldering plus the Vado di Sole sport crag around the Campo Imperatore plateau, from 6a to 9a+. The season is summer to early autumn. What changes your plans most are the two lifts: on the L'Aquila side the Funivia del Gran Sasso has been closed for maintenance since 21 September 2026 (the SP17bis road stays open), and on the Teramo side the Prati di Tivo gondola towards Corno Piccolo ran only until 20 September in summer 2026. For now you walk up.
Pennadomo is a small village in the middle Sangro valley in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, ringed by blades of hard grey and yellow limestone standing straight up out of clay hills. There are 46 to 101 single-pitch sport routes depending on the site, 4b to 8b+, averaging around 6c, mostly fingery technical slab. At about 400 m with sectors facing east or west it climbs all year; Resegone is an autumn–winter wall. The sectors are a walk from the village centre, but you need a car to reach the village. Some sectors have been rebolted, Dietro le placche was reported abandoned in autumn 2024, and the Paretone routes are currently not climbable.
The Parete dell'Orso (Bear Wall) in the Majella National Park, province of Pescara, Abruzzo: a south-facing limestone wall about two kilometres long, with 190 to over 300 single-pitch sport routes depending on the source, from grade 5 to 8c and averaging around 6c, fully rebolted in stainless steel by local climbers from 2014. South-facing at about 900 m, it is best in spring and autumn and climbable on sunny winter days. Know before you go: a municipal order makes helmets compulsory and bans parking and camping on the road below the wall; on 1 November 2025 rockfall below the Betacam route in the Pancia d'Elefante sector killed a climber, the spot was seized at the time, and no notice lifting it was found. You need a car.
