Ogawayama (小川山) is a spread of granite formations scattered through a valley in Kawakami Village, Minamisaku District, Nagano Prefecture. ROCKTOPO lists 1,055 routes here and keeps the bouldering on a separate Ogawayama Boulder page with 611 problems. Mountain Project titles its page "Japan's Yosemite that gave birth to free climbing in Japan" (Mountain Project), and the campground's own site says it is "『日本のヨセミテ』とも呼ばれる" — also called Japan's Yosemite (Mawarime-daira campground).

This post covers the decisions to make before going: whether it suits you, which months, how to get there, what you pay to get in, and the campground rules.

What kind of crag is it

The name. CLIMBING-net opens by pointing out that "当の小川山は廻り目平からはるかに離れた主脈上のピークである" — the actual Ogawayama is a summit on the main ridge, far from Mawarime-daira. What climbers call Ogawayama is really the crags around Mawarime-daira; the name simply stuck.

Rock and terrain. Both ROCKTOPO and CLIMBING-net list the rock as granite (花崗岩), and CLIMBING-net gives the angle as "60~90度". theCrag describes "mostly granite slab climbing, some cracks, some faces and even some roofs", with sectors facing every direction; some sectors require crossing small streams.

Getting lost is normal. CLIMBING-net calls the area "小さな岩峰の集合体" — a collection of small formations. It tells of people heading for Toride-iwa and ending up at Yane-iwa, and of a party that spent a whole day climbing Omusubi-yama thinking it was Suisho Slab. Most junctions off the main trails to popular sectors are marked with cairns; beyond that there are no signs.

Size. The three sites count very differently (checked 2026-10-12):

CLIMBING-netabout 700 routes"ルート数 約700本"
theCrag365 routes"Rock climbing 365 routes in crag"

Grade spread (ROCKTOPO). Sport routes cluster in the 5.10–5.11 range: 303 in the 5.10a band and 214 in the 5.11a band. There are 141 from 5.12a up, including 4 in the 5.14a band. Cracks lean easy to moderate: 64 in the 5.2 band and 77 in the 5.10a band. Multi-pitch is mostly 5.10 (49 routes). Bouldering runs from 10-kyu to 5-dan, with the largest group in the 4-kyu band (175 problems).

Who it suits. CLIMBING-net's feature checklist ticks beginner/intermediate OK, bouldering, bolted lead, crack lead and multi-pitch, with top-rope marked "限定あり" (limited). ROCKTOPO also curates a "小川山クラック登竜門" list of entry-level cracks. Mountain Project sums it up as "Cracks and slab abound in Ogawayama". If you want to learn crack and slab while rotating through sport and bouldering from one campground, few places offer more choice; even with only quickdraws there are 780 sport routes.

ROCKTOPO divides the crag into nine sub-areas (F = sport, C = crack, M = multi-pitch):

When to go

The sources disagree at the edges, April and November:

SourceSeason
ROCKTOPO (and the boulder page)April–November
CLIMBING-net"5月~10月" (May–October)
theCrag"The best season is definitely from July to mid October"

Cold is the main constraint. theCrag notes that the camp is "at about 1600m above sea level and that it can get really cold from mid October to May". The campground gives Mawarime-daira's elevation as "標高1,570m〜1,600m" and says that "真夏でも気温25℃を超えることが少ない" — even in midsummer it rarely goes above 25°C (Mawarime-daira campground). So midsummer is climbable, while April–May and late October onward call for warm layers.

The campground's open season decides whether you can camp. Two sources differ:

  • The campground's illustrated map PDF: Kinpo Sanso "営業期間 4月下旬~11月中旬" (open late April to mid-November).
  • Nagano's tourism site Go NAGANO (updated 2020/07/06): "4月下旬~11月上旬" (late April to early November).

The campground's 2026 season notice gave Kinpo Sanso and the Mawarime-daira campground a planned opening of "2026年4月25日"; check each year's notice for the actual date.

Rain. None of the sources say how long the rock takes to dry. ROCKTOPO keeps a list called "小川山・瑞牆で(多少の)雨でも登れるルート" (routes climbable in light rain at Ogawayama and Mizugaki), which is the place to look on wet days.

Public transport

The village bus timetable on the Kawakami Village site (revised 16 March 2024, 令和6年3月16日改正) lists 9 outbound departures from Kawakami Station, the first at 7:00 arriving Kawahake 7:35. The 16:54 departure only runs as far as Azusayama. The table also carries notes such as "休日は梓山止り" (terminates at Azusayama on holidays) and "休日は運休" (no service on holidays), so weekends and public holidays have fewer buses; check the original table before you go. The page states "バス料金のお支払いは現金のみです" — cash only — and drivers cannot break ¥5,000 or ¥10,000 notes.

For the walk from Kawahake to the campground, the only figure found is Go NAGANO's "JR小海線 信濃川上駅下車 バス35分 60分", which does not say outright that the 60 minutes is on foot. No other primary source was found to confirm it.

Driving

CLIMBING-net's directions: from Sutama IC take Route 141 toward Kiyosato, turn right at Nobeyama toward Kawakami, head for the Kawakami village office, turn right at the sign reading "廻り目平キャンプ場", and continue through the hamlet of Kawahake to the campground. There, "入口のゲート前に車を止め、駐車券を取ればゲートが開く" — stop at the entrance gate and take a parking ticket to open it. Total: "須玉ICより1時間半" (1.5 hours from Sutama IC). Go NAGANO gives Sutama IC as "50km 80分" and Yachiho Kogen IC as "45km 70分".

From the Saitama side you can take the Nakatsugawa forest road, but CLIMBING-net warns of more than an hour on dirt and that it "大雨中後には閉鎖されることがある" — may close during and after heavy rain.

Parking

The main lot is the campground's Mawarime-daira parking, and three sources give different capacities:

  • The campground site: "収容台数 約120台" (about 120 cars); if it is full, go to the Kinpo Sanso front desk first (Mawarime-daira campground).
  • Go NAGANO: "普通車70台 大型車4台" (70 cars, 4 large vehicles).
  • ROCKTOPO parking page: "約 30 台" (about 30), shared with campers and crowded on long weekends.

On the Higashimatazawa side there is roadside parking that ROCKTOPO puts at about 15 cars, with the note "路肩への駐車となる為邪魔にならないように注意する事" — it is on the road shoulder, so do not block traffic (ROCKTOPO). theCrag mentions that a free village-owned lot just below the campground "was closed in September 2024".

Rules to know before you go

Entry fee. The campground lists a day-use "入場料"; theCrag describes the fee as covering "day use and parking". The amounts differ by source:

SourceText
Campground site (current)Entry (4:00–19:00) "1人1日 ¥700" per person per day; camping "1人1泊 ¥1,300", ¥900 for 12 and under; notes "今年度から利用料金を上記の通り変更" (prices changed this year)
CLIMBING-net"入場料 500円、幕営料 900円、入浴料 500円 (いずれも一人あたり、2019年改定)"
theCrag"an entrance fee of 500 Yen (2024) per person for day use and parking"

The campground says its prices changed this year; the CLIMBING-net and theCrag figures date from 2019 and 2024. Go by the campground site. It also notes that entering before 4:00 or leaving after 19:00 is "幕営料扱いとなります" — charged as camping.

Campground rules. The campground lies inside Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The rules on the illustrated map PDF include:

  • After 9 PM, keep "焚き火、ランタン、機械音、話し声等" — campfires, lanterns, mechanical noise and conversation — to a minimum. CLIMBING-net also says "9時消灯が原則" (lights out at 9 as a rule).
  • "ゴミは原則、お持ち帰り" — take your rubbish home.
  • "火の取り扱いに十分ご注意ください" — take great care with fire.
  • The campground is a free site (フリーサイト) with no reservations needed; CLIMBING-net says you find your own flat spot. Reception hours are 7:00–20:00.

Facilities. Flush toilets, 24-hour hot showers (¥200 for 3 minutes) and coin laundry; baths at Kinpo Sanso (the map gives 14:00–19:30, adults ¥500). Kinpo Sanso has announced bath renovations from "2026年11月9日(月)~2027年4月上旬(予定)" (9 November 2026 to early April 2027, planned), during which guests are shuttled to outside baths (notice). Crash pads can be rented at Kinpo Sanso for "1日 ¥2,000" per day, in limited numbers (rentals).

Registration and closures. None of the sources found require climbers to register. The Japan Free Climbing Association's national list of access-issue areas did not include Ogawayama when checked on 2026-10-12.
