The province of Ragusa lies in the south-east corner of Sicily, on the same Monti Iblei plateau as Siracusa. The limestone plateau is cut by many "cave" (canyons), and local climbers have bolted crag after crag inside them. The best known is the long Cava d'Ispica between Modica and Ispica, whose walls still carry ancient cave dwellings and tombs.
This post helps you decide what level the Ragusa canyons suit, which months to go, how to drive from Modica to each crag, and what to respect when crossing private land and protected areas. For a season-and-region comparison across the series, see the series overview.
What kind of crag is it
Scattered canyon crags. theCrag sums Ragusa up in one line: just like Siracusa, it has many underrated places scattered all around, offering hard sport climbing. Everything is bolted single-pitch sport.
Scale. Counts by site (checked October 2026):
| Source | Coverage | Count |
|---|---|---|
| theCrag: Ragusa | Whole province | 726 routes, 14 areas |
| theCrag: Cava Ispica | Cava d'Ispica | 192 routes, 9 sectors |
| Climb Europe | Ragusa | "100's of single-pitch sport routes" |
On theCrag the biggest areas are Cava Ispica (192 routes) and Timpa Rossa near Rosolini (147). Within Cava Ispica, the largest sectors are Wild (45), Pernamazzone (43) and Nemesi (32). Sicily's official tourism site visitsicily names Ambiguità, Iaddinara, Umpa Lumpa, Pandora and Cava d'Ispica as Ragusa's best-known crags.
Four crags with full route tables. Planetmountain covers four:
- Wild (Cava d'Ispica, Ispica): 45 routes, 5a–8b+. Planetmountain's Italian page calls it "una delle falesia più belle della Sicilia" (one of Sicily's most beautiful crags): grey and white limestone, mostly featured slab, steep in places, "adatto a tutti" (suits everyone).
- Pernamazzone (Cava d'Ispica, Ragusa): 40 routes, 5c–8a, south-facing. Local climbers rebolted it in 2018, replacing rusty chains and corroded bolts.
- Pandora (Cava Gisana, Modica): 41 routes, 5a–8b, a wall about 100 m wide and up to 25 m tall, from slightly overhanging slab to pumpy steep ground.
- Umpa Lumpa (Cava Gisana, Modica): 25 routes, 5c–7b+, up to 18 m, technical and bouldery on slabs and steep walls.
Who it suits. Climbers who want quiet single-pitch sport in a canyon. Wild and Pernamazzone have something at every grade, including a handful of routes at 6a and below; Pandora's hardest lines reach 8b. Compared with Canicattini near Siracusa, the crags here are more scattered and each one is smaller.
When to go
| Source | Season |
|---|---|
| UKC Sicily guide | Spring and autumn best; July and August too hot |
| Climb Europe | Autumn through to spring |
| Planetmountain: Pandora | Faces east, shade after midday, good from March to November |
| Planetmountain: Umpa Lumpa | Faces north-east, shade from midday, March to November |
| Planetmountain: Pernamazzone | Faces south; the 2018 report says on sunny days you'll sweat "anche in pieno inverno" (even in midwinter) |
South-facing in winter, shady canyons in spring and autumn. Pernamazzone is a winter crag; Pandora and Umpa Lumpa in Cava Gisana suit late spring and early autumn, when the afternoon shade arrives.
Getting there
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| Into Sicily | Catania airport | Hire a car at Catania airport |
| To Modica / Ragusa | Etna Trasporti airport bus to Ragusa; Trenitalia regional trains Siracusa–Modica; AST buses | Via the SS114 / SS115 |
| To the crags | No buses to the crags | Each crag is at the end of a country lane or dirt track |
Public transport
The City of Ragusa's long-distance bus page lists AST between Ragusa, Modica, Ispica and Siracusa; Etna Trasporti between Ragusa and Catania airport; and Interbus between Catania and Siracusa. Trenitalia runs regional trains from Modica to Siracusa on its Caltanissetta – Siracusa line. Timetables change often, so check with each operator before you go.
Once you're in Modica or Ispica, there's no public transport to the crags, and the UKC guide says you really need a car in Sicily.
Driving
Approaches from the Planetmountain crag pages:
- Wild: start from the sports ground in Ispica, turn left at the SS115 junction towards Modica, after about 300 m turn right onto a dirt road, and after another 300 m or so park beside a small paved road on the right. At the green gate, go through the small gate to its right and close it behind you, then walk along a straight farm track and follow blue triangles and cairns. Partway along you have to move a rusty net aside and put it back. The stone arch ("Arco di Pietra") marks the entrance to the crag, about 20 minutes in all.
- Pernamazzone: from the Modica Sorda shopping area take the SS114 towards Siracusa, go through two roundabouts and take the dirt road down into the valley; park at the third bend where the road widens (don't block it). Walk past some houses, drop into the riverbed (fence: pass it on the left), follow the uphill track to the big farmhouse called Rifugio Pernamazzone and go straight up to the walls, about 10 minutes.
- Pandora: on the Sorda–Sampieri road from Modica towards Marina di Modica, 8 km from the "Moda Italia" roundabout; park in the clearing opposite an old farmhouse without blocking the gate. Walk 300 m along the guardrail and enter the Cava Gisana nature trail on the left, "attraversare il terreno (tutto con il massimo rispetto)" (cross the land with the utmost respect), then follow red dots, about 5 minutes.
- Umpa Lumpa: about 8 km along the same road, turn left onto a dirt track for 400 m and park, leaving room for farm vehicles. Follow red markings into Cava Gisana, use a fixed rope, then walk up the riverbed for about 50 m (take care in the rain).
Parking
Every source makes the same point: these are farmers' roads, so never block a gate or a farm vehicle. theCrag says there are a few places inside Cava d'Ispica that can host groups, but they need booking in advance.
Rules to know before you go
Natura 2000 site. Cava d'Ispica is an EU Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation (ZSC ITA080009) of 947 ha across the municipalities of Modica, Ispica and Rosolini (lasiciliainrete site listing). The listing notes rare cliff vegetation and describes the valley as a refuge and nesting area for many vertebrates. I found no climbing ban or seasonal restriction; inside the canyon, stay on the existing paths.
Crossing private land and closing gates. On the approaches above, Wild takes you through a green gate and past a net, Pandora across private land, and Umpa Lumpa onto a farm track you must keep clear. Planetmountain's wording is "avendo cura di richiuderlo alle spalle" (taking care to close it behind you). These notes come from the developers, so check theCrag for newer access notices before you go.
Bolts. Pernamazzone was rebolted in 2018; I found no rebolting record for the other crags. The 2018 report also warns that the yellowish rock in Pernamazzone's last sector occasionally sheds small crusts. theCrag shows a warning on Orient Valley that I couldn't read, so check it first.
Rescue. CNSAS Sicilia says that in Sicily you call 112 after a mountain accident and specifically ask for the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Route tables come mainly from the Planetmountain crag pages (compiled by the developers); stars and ascent counts come from the "Nearby Icons" on theCrag's Ragusa page. Where the two disagree on a grade, both are given.
Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)
Routes 3–9 at Wild form a run from 5a to 5c+; Pandora also has a few at 5a.
