Statte: Single-Pitch Sport Climbing in a Limestone Gorge near Taranto | Italy Climbing Crags

Oct 19, 20261 min
TL;DRStatte, just north of Taranto in Puglia, is single-pitch sport climbing on both sides of the Leucaspide gorge. Depending on the site it lists 172 to more than 280 routes, mostly 5c to 7c, which makes it the biggest crag in Puglia. The gorge has a lower and an upper end with separate parking; a Kyma no. 4 bus runs from Taranto station to the village, but the upper sectors need a car. The thing most likely to change your plans is the law: the gorge lies inside the Natura 2000 site IT9130007, whose management rules ban climbing from 1 January to 31 August for bird nesting. On paper that leaves September to December, yet the databases and local sites all say you can climb year-round, so check before you go.

Statte is a small town just north of Taranto. West of town runs a limestone gorge (gravina) about 100 metres deep, with more than two hundred single-pitch sport routes on its walls. Climb Europe calls it the largest crag in the region.

This article helps you decide a few things: whether it suits your grade, whether to aim for the upper or lower gorge, which months to go, how to get there without a car, and how to read the nesting-season ban in the protected area. For seasons and regions across Italy, see the series overview. The other Puglia article, on sea cliffs and deep water soloing, is Salento.

What kind of crag is it

Gorge and rock. The Comune di Statte says the Leucaspide gorge forms where two smaller gorges, Amastuola and Triglie, meet. The upper part is called Accetta, the middle Leucaspide and the last stretch Gennarini. The rock is limestone plus a calcarenite known locally as "tufo". RockAroundTheWorld, writing up a 2025 visit, describes climbing on pockets with a bit of tufa; Il Mito has bands of grey rock either side of orange caves.

Style. All single-pitch sport. Most routes are 14–30 m long: theCrag gives about 16 m at Solarium and Bagno turco, and the local crag site Rocciaeresina says the routes at Le 2 Torri run 25–30 m.

Size. The numbers differ by site (checked October 2026):

SourceCount
falesia.it172 routes in 11 sectors, 4c–8b; the description says "più di 200 vie"
theCrag187 routes in 14 sectors
UKClimbing236 routes, 4c–8b
RockAroundTheWorldabout 250 routes facing all directions
Climb Europemore than 280 routes in 19 sectors, mostly 5c–7c
Puglia Rock blurb (theCrag guidebook box)"nearly 300 routes", 5c–7c

Upper and lower gorge. theCrag groups the sectors by approach. The groups connect, but crossing between them is rougher going:

ApproachSectorsNotes
Lower: town cemeteryIl Mito, Il Mito lato B, Scrigno, Rosa dei Venti, Hardesia, Cosa NostraIl Mito is at the south end, sunny, about 40 routes 5a–7a up to 25 m (RockAroundTheWorld)
Middle: under the metal silo on the east sideSolarium, Bagno Turco, Cattedrale, Farmacia, Hokutonoken, MonsterSolarium is 5 minutes from the car, sunny and quick-drying; most of falesia.it's most-repeated routes are here
Upper: Masseria Amastuola vineyard on the west sideArcade, Il Graffio, Capitan Harlock, Grotta, Master of Rock, Le 2 Torri, GanjaRockAroundTheWorld says the best climbing is concentrated here; most routes of 7b and up are at Ganja, Master of Rock and Il Graffio

Who it suits. Single-pitch climbers working 5c to 7a get the most choice. The lower and middle sectors are a few minutes' walk, which makes them good for beginners; the upper gorge is harder overall and the approach includes two fixed-rope descents.

When to go

SourceSeason
Climb EuropePuglia has warm winters and hot summers, so autumn to spring is best; walls on both sides let you pick sun or shade
UKClimbingswitching sides gives shade all day all year; a breeze helps in summer
falesia.it"ottima in primavera-estate" (best in spring and summer), ventilated, shade in the afternoon
falesia.it: Il Graffiolong routes in shade all day, good for summer
falesia.it: Ganjashade until 1 pm in summer; in spring and autumn the right side is in shade until 4 pm
Rocciaeresina: Ganjabest in the shoulder seasons; on hot days there is still shade early morning or late afternoon

These seasonal tips do not match the law. The gorge is in a protected area whose management rules ban climbing from 1 January to 31 August (see the rules below). Read literally, that leaves only September to December.

Rain. On a rainy February day RockAroundTheWorld walked the gorge floor and found brambles, slippery rock and puddles, ending up wading thigh-deep to get out. After rain, head for sunny, quick-drying sectors such as Solarium or Il Mito, and don't try to walk the length of the gorge floor.

Last legwalk from the village to the cemetery parking (lower gorge)lower and middle sectors park west of the village; for the upper gorge navigate to Masseria Amastuola

Public transport

Taranto's city bus company, Kyma Mobilità, runs line 4 from Porto Mercantile via Taranto railway station (Stazione FF.SS.) to Zona Montetermiti in Statte. The winter weekday timetable in the official PDF starts at 05:18 and runs roughly every 20–35 minutes during the day; there is a separate holiday timetable. The PDF was uploaded in December 2022, so check the Kyma route page or the live arrivals before you go.

The sources don't give the walking distance from the village to the cemetery parking; check a map. The upper sectors (Capitan Harlock, Le 2 Torri, Master of Rock) sit in a vineyard on the west side of the gorge. RockAroundTheWorld notes they are less than 500 m across the gorge but a 15-minute drive round, so they are hard to reach without a car.

Driving

Lower gorge (Il Mito and nearby). UKClimbing and theCrag both say to park at the Statte cemetery on the east side of the gorge, go through the metal gates and follow the path across the field to the descent. UKClimbing warns against heading for the upper gorge from here: "possible but very unpleasant".

Middle gorge (Solarium and nearby). theCrag says to park under the metal silo halfway along the east side. For Farmacia, Hokutonoken and Monster, take the metal stairs down to the gorge floor; for Solarium and Bagno Turco, follow the path on the right north-east to a tin-roofed farm building, then go left down a rock slab. UKClimbing says several dead-end roads west of the village point at the gorge; park at the end, and the path to Solarium branches off at an old shelter with a red and yellow metal roof, about 3 minutes in.

Upper gorge (Capitan Harlock, Master of Rock, Ganja). UKClimbing says Google Maps can't navigate to the car park it labels "Parkplatz Climbing area", so aim for the Masseria Amastuola wine resort instead. The two landmarks are the Masseria on its hilltop and a huge red and white chimney to the south. Take the vineyard track to the end, turn right and drive a short way further to the parking by a big dry-stone wall. The path leaves from the far end heading east and reaches the descent in about 10 minutes, with rope handrails. UKClimbing calls it one of "the world's most unconvincing access routes on first acquaintance" and says to have faith.

Rules to know before you go

Nesting-season ban: 1 January to 31 August. The Comune's page on the gorge says nothing about climbing. But the Leucaspide gorge lies inside the Natura 2000 site "Area delle Gravine" (IT9130007), which is both an SCI and an SPA (ILVA 2007 environmental report, Wikipedia). The two legal texts:

RuleTextPeriod
Puglia Regional Regulation no. 28 of 2008, Art. 5 (all SPAs)bans "arrampicata libera o attrezzata sulle pareti rocciose nel periodo di nidificazione"1 January to 30 August
Area delle Gravine management plan rules (DGR 2435/2009), Art. 10bans climbing on rock walls; outside that period climbing only on walls that are already bolted; new routes need the managing body's approval, and it can suspend climbing1 January to 31 August

The management plan rules also forbid approaching walls where Egyptian vultures, peregrine falcons, lanner falcons or eagle owls are nesting, and forbid writing on the rock or leaving ropes or chains on it (bolts that a route needs are allowed). Breaking an order of the managing body carries a fine of €25.82 to €258.22.

The sources disagree. None of the databases or local sites mention the nesting ban: falesia.it says spring and summer are best, UKClimbing says you can climb year-round, and Rocciaeresina's 2023 updates include spring sessions. Some groups do follow the rule: Trekking Falco Naumanni, a hiking group from Matera, cancelled a Statte climbing day on 1 March 2015 because of "vincoli ambientali presenti in questo periodo" (environmental restrictions in force at this time). Made in Taranto also notes that raptors nest in the gorge and are protected in the breeding season. We found nothing on how the ban is enforced or on any separate notice (checked October 2026); neither the Terra delle Gravine park website nor the Comune's site has a climbing notice. If you want to go between January and August, write first to the Provincia di Taranto (the site's managing body) or the park; otherwise plan for September to December.

Private vineyard. The upper-gorge parking and path cross the Masseria Amastuola vineyard. UKClimbing says the parking may be closed when there is work in the vineyards (October); then approach from the Solarium side and cross the gorge. RockAroundTheWorld suggests skirting the vineyard on its west side along the boundary wall. Don't drive between the vine rows or block the farm tracks.

theCrag shows a warning icon on the Scrigno sector. Its page wouldn't load, so we don't know what the warning says.

Bolts. UKClimbing says the gorge is mostly well bolted, with a few ageing bolts that are "obvious from the first clip", and a rebolting programme starting on Il Mito in 2026. Rocciaeresina reports that Progetto Natura Verticale, using crowdfunding plus money from Rampicanti ClimbingFarm and Rocciaeresina on top of seed funding from CAI Puglia, replaced every lower-off on Il Mito (side A) with 316 stainless steel and a karabiner. At Ganja, Superskunk was the first route bolted upstream of the aqueduct bridge; its non-stainless bolts near the tufas aged quickly and were replaced with stainless in 2023. On any route not listed in those updates, check the bolts from the first clip.

Rescue. Call 112 (CNSAS). Mountain rescue in Puglia is run by CNSAS Puglia, which has a Murgia station and an inter-regional canyon rescue team. The sources say nothing about insurance requirements.

Routes by level

YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.

Routes and grades come mainly from the falesia.it sector pages and Rocciaeresina's sector updates; where they differ, both are given. Rocciaeresina is published by the local team that bolts these routes and is more recent; some falesia.it entries still carry old grades or none. Repeat counts are falesia.it logs, and the numbers are all small.

Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)

Solarium and Il Mito have the most, a few minutes from the car. Le 2 Torri has longer 25–30 m routes, which Rocciaeresina recommends for beginners and for anyone preparing for multi-pitch.

New sectors. In 2023 Rocciaeresina opened the Arcade sector next to the upper-gorge descent, with 6 routes from 6a to 7b+. UKClimbing says a new sector about 10 minutes down the gorge from Il Mito was being developed in spring and summer 2026, currently 5a–7b.

Where to look things up

  • falesia.it: Statte: route counts, grade ranges and repeats per sector; each sector page has the route list and sun times.
  • theCrag: Statte: the four approaches, routes by sector and the three-star classics.
  • UKClimbing: Statte: detailed directions to the vineyard parking and recent bolt condition.
  • Rocciaeresina: Statte: new routes, rebolting and lower-off updates from the local bolting team, with sector topos.
  • Area delle Gravine management plan rules: the original text of the climbing ban and protected-area rules (Italian PDF).
  • Kyma Mobilità routes and timetables: bus no. 4 from Taranto to Statte.
  • Guidebooks: Grades and route counts here come mainly from online databases; the guidebook is the authority.
    • Puglia Rock (Graziano Montel, Versante Sud, 2024, Italian, 208 pages, ISBN 9788855470681): subtitled "Falesie e DWS, roccia e mare dal Gargano al Salento", covering Puglia's crags and deep water soloing, Statte included. The publisher describes the author as a FASI instructor and route setter who has spent thirty years bolting new crags and restoring old ones in Puglia.
    • The previous generation was Versante Sud's A Sud guides from 2006 (per the publisher), which covered a wider area than Puglia. UKClimbing says per-crag electronic guides are available from A Sud / iClimb.
