Salento: The Ciolo Fjord, the Mannute Sea-Cliff Cave and Deep Water Solo | Italy Climbing Crags

Seaside limestone at the very tip of Italy's heel, near Santa Maria di Leuca. The Ciolo fjord has roughly 50–90 single-pitch sport routes depending on the site, graded 4b to 7b+, five minutes from the road; the Mannute sea-cliff cave 3 km south has steep 7a+ to 8a lines and an approach with fixed ropes; and about 10 km of coast offers deep water solo. Two things to know first: Gulliver says the Tetto Marino sector has been off limits "since 2022", and we could not find the original order; and from 12 October 2026 a stretch of the coast road at Ponte Ciolo is closed on weekday daytimes for about 30 days.

Statte: Single-Pitch Sport Climbing in a Limestone Gorge near Taranto | Italy Climbing Crags

Statte, just north of Taranto in Puglia, is single-pitch sport climbing on both sides of the Leucaspide gorge. Depending on the site it lists 172 to more than 280 routes, mostly 5c to 7c, which makes it the biggest crag in Puglia. The gorge has a lower and an upper end with separate parking; a Kyma no. 4 bus runs from Taranto station to the village, but the upper sectors need a car. The thing most likely to change your plans is the law: the gorge lies inside the Natura 2000 site IT9130007, whose management rules ban climbing from 1 January to 31 August for bird nesting. On paper that leaves September to December, yet the databases and local sites all say you can climb year-round, so check before you go.
