Salento is the very tip of Italy's "heel", in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The climbing is at the southern end, near Santa Maria di Leuca, a few kilometres north along the SP358 coast road. One spot is the Ciolo fjord, which runs under the Ponte Ciolo bridge. The other is the Mannute caves, about 3 km south, hanging halfway up the sea cliffs. The limestone cliffs along the open sea are used for deep water solo (DWS).
The whole area lies inside the Costa Otranto–Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase regional nature park. This post helps you decide whether these crags suit your level, which months to go, how to get there without a car, and which areas are currently off limits. Puglia's other big crag is near Taranto, covered in the Statte post; for a season-and-region comparison of Italian crags, see the series overview.
What kind of crag is it
Compact seaside limestone, mostly single-pitch sport. UKClimbing calls Ciolo "The major climbing venue in Salento". The rock is compact limestone full of pockets and tufas (locally canne), graded 4 to 7b+, with some pitches 25–30 m long. In 2013, for the Salento Climbing Fest, the local club Salentoverticale brought in the Ragni di Lecco to rebolt the whole wall, mostly with expansion bolts.
Three kinds of climbing, for different people.
| Area | Style | Grades (source) | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ciolo fjord (upper and lower Paretone, Incanto) | Vertical to slightly overhanging single pitches on pockets and tufas | 4b–7b+ (falesia.it) | Most choice for 5c to 6c climbers; five-minute walk |
| Mannute (Anga della Mannuta, Grotta della Mannuta, Grottino) | Sea cliff about 50 m above the water; the cave is steep | Cave 7a+–8a; Anga 6a–7b (Ragni di Lecco) | 6c and up, comfortable with exposure; fixed ropes on the approach |
| Deep water solo along the coast | Ropeless climbing above the sea on cliffs and sea caves | Sources give no grades | Strong swimmers who can read the sea; usually needs a boat |
Scale. Counts vary a lot because each site covers a different area (checked October 2026):
| Source | Coverage | Count |
|---|---|---|
| falesia.it: Ponte Ciolo | Two Ciolo sectors | 56 routes (Paretone Inferiore 37, Superiore 19), 4b–7b+ |
| UKClimbing: Ciolo | Ciolo | 46 routes |
| Gulliver: Ciolo | Paretone + Tetto Marino | 50 routes on the Paretone, 4–7c (revised 2022-07-03) |
| theCrag: Ciolo | Ciolo, Incanto, Mannute, one DWS spot | 89 routes |
| Salentoverticale (salentooutdoor) | Everything around Leuca | "Over 100 climbing routes" |
When to go
Climbable all year; in summer, pick the shady hours. The sites disagree on aspect (UKClimbing says NE, Gulliver east, falesia.it south but says the canyon is in shade after 2 pm). What matters is the afternoon shade:
| Area | Source | Sun and season |
|---|---|---|
| Ciolo | UKClimbing | Mild winters and afternoon shade in summer, so climbable all year |
| Ciolo | theCrag | In summer, in the shade from about 12:00 |
| Ciolo | falesia.it | Canyon in the shade from 14:00; very windy |
| Mannute | climbingcasuals | Faces east, shade from 11:30; avoid humid days and the days after rain |
| Deep water solo | Salentoverticale | May to October for air and water temperature |
The summer problem is people. Ciolo bay is a popular swimming and jumping spot. Gulliver says parking by the bridge is "meno facile d'estate" (harder in summer), and theCrag warns that the bins fill fast in summer, so bring a bag and carry your rubbish out. To avoid the crowds, go on weekdays in spring, autumn or winter.
Getting there
| Public transport | Driving | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Lecce railway station | From Lecce take the SS16 and SS275 towards Leuca |
| Middle | FS Sud Est train to the end of the line at Gagliano Leuca | Join the SP358 coast road |
| Last leg | Walk the Sentiero del Ciolo from town down the canyon | Ciolo: park by the bridge; Mannute: roadside near the km 47 sign |
Public transport
The regional railway FS Sud Est (formerly Ferrovie del Sud Est) runs two lines to Gagliano Leuca station: line 3 via Nardò and Casarano, and line 6 via Maglie and Tricase. Taking the summer 2026 timetable (1 July to 13 September) as an example, line 6 has 8 weekday trains to Gagliano, and far fewer on Sundays and holidays. The off-season timetable is different, so check your date on the timetable search before you go.
The station is in the town of Gagliano del Capo. The Comune di Gagliano del Capo describes the Sentiero del Ciolo as starting on the inland side of town and following the canyon down to the little Ciolo bay: about 4 km, about an hour, grade T (tourist path). The page also says climbers use it. theCrag says that from town you follow the "Sentiero il Ciolo" signs; there is parking just before the path starts, and the climbs are two minutes further on. There is no public transport to Mannute; you need a car.
Driving
From Santa Maria di Leuca, take the SP358 north:
- Ciolo: about 6 km to Ponte Ciolo (Gulliver).
- Mannute: about 3 km; park near the km 47 sign (Ragni di Lecco).
Road closure, October 2026. Il Gallo and Ozanews reported on 2026-10-10 (secondary: we did not find the original order from the Provincia di Lecce) that the province is closing the SP358 between km 43+400 and 44+450 from 12 October, to repair the rockfall nets beside Ponte Ciolo. The closure applies Monday to Friday, 7:00–15:30, for an estimated 30 days, with access for residents and frontage owners only. That is the stretch between the SP195 junction (to Gagliano town) and the SS275 (to Leuca). Until mid-November, if you want to climb at Ciolo on a weekday daytime, walk in on the path from Gagliano town and follow the diversion signs on site.
Parking
- Ciolo bridge: park near the bar-restaurant by the bridge, walk back across, take the steps down to the cove, then follow the path up the little valley with the wall on your left; about 5 minutes (Gulliver).
- Gagliano town end: park just before the start of the Sentiero del Ciolo (theCrag).
- Mannute: roadside near the km 47 sign. Find the path to the sea to the right of a small house inside a stone wall, follow red dots and cairns down, and you reach a fixed rope with the Anga sector on your right. For Grotta della Mannuta, continue left along a very exposed ledge with fixed ropes; about 10 minutes (Ragni di Lecco, Planetmountain 2013).
Rules to know before you go
The Tetto Marino sector is off limits (secondary). Tetto Marino is the big cave roof you reach first walking up the Ciolo fjord. Gulliver marks it "dal 2022 accesso vietato" (access forbidden since 2022). We searched the Comune di Gagliano del Capo website, the Provincia di Lecce news, the park's trail regulations and news reports, and found no text of the order, its scope or its reason. theCrag and Climbook still list 5–6 routes there with no warning. Treat it as closed and stay out of the cave; if there is a sign on site, the sign is what counts.
The 2013 climbing ban and today's "tolerated" status (secondary). la Repubblica, 2013-08-28 reported that during the opening week of the Salento Climbing Fest, the environmental police (Carabinieri NOE) noted that Ciolo lies in a high hydrogeological-risk red zone and that the event lacked authorisation from the river-basin authority (Autorità di bacino); the mayor then banned climbing at Ciolo. An Up-Climbing commentary the same year also mentions the "ordinanza di divieto di arrampicata". We found no record of the order being revoked. theCrag's access note says the crag is in the regional nature park and climbing "is tollerated", and UKClimbing and the other databases list it as climbable. In practice people climb here as normal, but nothing formally allows it; if you are asked to leave, leave.
Coastal rockfall zones affect deep water solo (secondary). Quotidiano di Puglia, 2023-08-06 summarised the coastguard (Capitaneria di porto) orders: stretches of coast at the southern tip of Lecce province classed as high rockfall risk (PG3) are closed to swimming, boating, fishing and anchoring. The water within 100 m of the Ciolo cliff has stayed closed throughout, and stretches near Leuca such as Grotta del Fiume–Grotta Tre Porte are closed too. These orders are reviewed every year, and deep water solo means swimming and climbing right under these cliffs. Before you go, check the latest orders from the Gallipoli office on the coastguard ordinance search, and don't get in the water inside a closed zone.
Bolt condition. Most of the 2013 bolting is in good shape, but salt air rusts the bolts. A 2020 edit on falesia.it says the bolting is mostly "ottima" (excellent), with rust visible on some. In 2022 Gulliver flagged Thai garden (6b+) and Alligator (7a) as not rebolted, with chains in very bad condition: "Sconsigliata!" (not recommended). climbingcasuals also says some pitches were not rebolted. Mannute was bolted only in 2013, and every belay has rappel rings (climbingcasuals).
Mannute is not for beginners or children. climbingcasuals says the approach is "molto esposto" (very exposed), not suitable for beginners or children, and inside a nature reserve.
Jumping and camping. Jumping off the Ponte Ciolo bridge is prohibited (ITALY Magazine 2022, secondary). Quotidiano di Puglia, 2024 reported that the mayor of Gagliano del Capo banned camping, encampments and bivouacs outside designated sites across the whole municipality, with fines and seizure of vehicles and equipment; the trigger was campervans set up in the car park above the bridge (secondary).
Rescue. For an accident on the cliff, call the European emergency number 112; CNSAS (Italy's mountain and cave rescue) is dispatched through 112, and CNSAS Puglia has a mountain rescue station in Salento. For emergencies at sea you can also call the coastguard's free "Numero Blu", 1530.
Routes by level
YDS and V-grade conversions follow the Mountain Project international grade comparison chart and are approximate; "approx." marks grades the sources give without a/b/c (such as 4 or 5+). The original grade is the one that counts.
Routes and grades come mainly from Gulliver (revised 2022), Salentoverticale's salentooutdoor list, and the Ragni di Lecco list for Mannute. The three often differ by half a grade; both are shown. Of the 89 routes on theCrag, most are 6a+ (16) and 6b+ (12), and only one is 8a.
Beginner: up to 6a (YDS 5.10a and below)
These are mostly on Ciolo's Paretone Superiore (upper wall): short routes close to the path. Mannute's Grottino also has a 5c+, but the approach is exposed, so it is not a good first stop for beginners.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settebelloalex | 4b (Gulliver) / 4c (salentooutdoor) | 5.5 | 16 m | Ciolo Paretone Superiore | Gulliver, salentooutdoor |
| Smirto | 5b | 5.8 | 16 m | Ciolo Paretone Superiore | Gulliver and salentooutdoor agree |
| Fico ninja | 5a+ (Gulliver) / 5b+ (salentooutdoor) | — | Two pitches; second 6a+ (Gulliver) / 5c (salentooutdoor) | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Corner first, then slab (Gulliver); theCrag grades the whole route 6a+ with three stars and lists it as the local icon |
| Deepwater | 5c+ | approx. 5.9+ | 16 m | Ciolo Paretone Superiore | Gulliver and salentooutdoor agree |
| La fessura | 6a (salentooutdoor, climbingcasuals) / 6a+ (Gulliver) | 5.10a | 25 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | A crack; climbingcasuals: "bella e impegnativa" |
| La riccia | 5c+ | approx. 5.9+ | 18 m | Mannute Grottino | climbingcasuals: fun route on pockets and tufas |
Intermediate: 6a+ to 6c+ (YDS 5.10b–5.11c)
Ciolo's Paretone Inferiore (lower wall) is the main event, and most of Gulliver's "super!" routes are in this band. Mannute's Anga sector has vertical 25–35 m stamina routes.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roten zolen | 6a+ | 5.10b | 24–32 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Gulliver: "Tiro impegnativo e tecnico su fessurino, super!" |
| No reti al ciolo | 6a+ | 5.10b | 25 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Bolted by Davide Schiantarelli (climbingcasuals); the name means "no rockfall nets at Ciolo" |
| En garde | 6a+ | 5.10b | 30 m | Mannute Anga | Ragni di Lecco, salentooutdoor |
| Dritto pé dritto | 6b+ | 5.10d | 25 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Bolted early on by climbers from Bari (climbingcasuals); Gulliver: "super!" |
| Via latina | 6c | 5.11a/b | 30 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Gulliver: tufa start, then a delicate slab and a small roof, "super!" |
| Antonio il grande | 6c+ | 5.11c | 25 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Gulliver: delicate moves on slab, finishing on tufas |
| Pete de puercu | 6c+ | 5.11c | 18 m | Mannute Grottino | Bolted and first climbed by Paolo Baldassarre (Ragni di Lecco) |
Advanced: 7a to 7c+ (YDS 5.11d–5.13a)
Ciolo tops out around 7b+/7c (Cannes, Zanzare); the steep 7b-and-up lines are in the Mannute cave. climbingcasuals describes the cave as "scalata in strapiombo" (overhanging climbing), with 10–12 quickdraws per route on average.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Papuscia | 7a | 5.11d | 35 m | Mannute Anga | Ragni di Lecco |
| Turcinieddhu | 7a+ | 5.12a | 20 m | Grotta della Mannuta | Short and physical with an intense boulder crux in the middle (climbingcasuals) |
| Zanzare | 7b+ | 5.12c | 30 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | Gulliver: "Bellissima via di continuità", "Super!" |
| Cannes | 7b+ (Gulliver) / 7b+/7c (salentooutdoor, climbingcasuals) | 5.12c | 25 m | Ciolo Paretone Inferiore | climbingcasuals: the hardest on the Paretone and one of the best |
| Lu sule lu mare lu ientu | 7b | 5.12b | 35 m | Grotta della Mannuta | climbingcasuals: overhanging stamina route, "Top!" |
| Negroamaro | 7b | 5.12b | 25 m | Grotta della Mannuta | Boulder crux on draperies and tufas |
| Due cuori | 7c | 5.12d | 35 m | Grotta della Mannuta | Bolted by Fabio Palma and Luca Passini (Ragni di Lecco) |
| Scapece | 7c+ | 5.13a | 20 m | Grotta della Mannuta | Shares its finish with La pietra del sud |
Expert: 8a and up (YDS 5.13b and up)
There are only two 8as in the whole area, and one of them is in the closed Tetto Marino sector.
| Route | Grade | YDS | Length / pitches | Sector | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| La pietra del sud | 8a | 5.13b | 32 m | Grotta della Mannuta | Bolted by Fabio Palma and Luca Passini (Ragni di Lecco); salentooutdoor calls it the top of the local range, "8A of the Mannuta cave" |
Local Hero (8a, 12 m) in Tetto Marino is what climbingcasuals calls "il primo 8a della zona" (the first 8a in the area), but the sector has been off limits since 2022 (see the rules above), so it is left out of the table.
Deep water solo
Salentoverticale says about 10 km of coast around Leuca can be climbed as deep water solo, with around a hundred lines so far, most reached by boat. Boats can be rented in Santa Maria di Leuca or at the small harbour of Novaglie, and the club also offers a boat with local climbers as support. Spots you can walk to include Grotta dell'Aspro (5 minutes from Ponte Ciolo), Grotta del Pozzo (15 minutes), Acqua de li Rizzi (10 minutes), Rio Guardiola, and the Grotte Cazzafri at Leuca's old harbour.
Sources give no route grades. Climb Europe says the Puglia Rock guidebook covers 8 DWS areas, but "only the general area is covered and no actual routes", so you explore for yourself. Spots near Ciolo may fall inside the sea exclusion zone described above; check the orders before you get in.
